On the morning of a Thai lottery draw, temple courtyards and the bases of certain old trees can be busy with people who are not there to pray for health or fortune in the usual way. They want digits. A number glimpsed in a dream, a shape seen in the folds of a tree's bark, the license plate of a car that appeared in an odd news story: all of it can be read as a message from a spirit world that, in popular belief, is willing to share next month's winning combination. This page explains where those numbers are supposed to land, how the lottery they feed actually works, and what the same habit looks like elsewhere in Asia. If you are curious about the wider world of number belief, see our pages on dream numbers, lucky and unlucky numbers and gambling superstitions.
Where the numbers come from: Thailand's government lottery
The ritual number-hunting culture in Thailand exists because there is a real, official prize to aim at. The country's first lottery was authorized by King Chulalongkorn in the year 2417 of the Buddhist Era, run by the Royal Guards Department, and the modern Government Lottery Office dates its founding to April 5, 1939, when the cabinet transferred the lottery to the Ministry of Finance7. Today the GLO is a state enterprise under the Ministry of Finance, a juristic person under the Government Lottery Office Act B.E. 2517, and it has been running draws for 145 years7.
The office prints two ticket types: the government lottery and the charity lottery6. The charity lottery is checked against the government lottery results of the same draw, so one draw feeds both games4. A full set of government lottery tickets carries 14,168 prizes totaling THB 48,000,000, and prize money is paid to whoever holds the winning ticket and presents it to claim4. If a set is not fully sold, each prize is reduced proportionally4.
The GLO itself frames the official lottery as a way of pulling the underground lottery above ground, making it legal and bringing the money into the tax system, and notes that buyers face no risk of the operator running away because the operator is the government8. That official game is what temple rituals, tree spirits and dream interpretation are all trying to hit.
Rituals at temples, shrines and lucky trees
The habit of asking spirits for numbers is not a fringe activity in Thailand; it is part of the fabric around each draw. In the days before the 1st and the 16th, players make trips to shrines and to certain trees with reputations for answering requests, offering incense, flowers or small gifts, and asking for a sign. The signs are read generously:

- A number of frangipani flowers fallen under a tree
- The count of coins that come back in a fortune-telling draw
- The pattern of a root or a stain on a trunk
- The license plate or house number from a strange news event, such as an unusual animal birth or a striking accident
None of this is secret or furtive. Local news outlets report the crowds at famous spirit trees and shrines before each draw, and the practice is treated as ordinary popular religion rather than anything shady. It sits alongside the other great source of ritual numbers, dreams, which have their own long-established conversion systems; see our page on dream numbers for how that works.
It is worth knowing that the draw itself has been designed to be visibly fair. The GLO first used a clear plastic draw drum, developed with King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, for the draw of October 16, 1987, so the public can watch the balls come out7. Results are also delivered by SMS to subscribers' mobile phones8. So while the rituals are about persuading spirits, the mechanics on the day are mechanical and public: no amount of incense changes the drum, but nothing about the drum stops anyone from believing the spirits already knew.
If you want to understand the belief system behind this, our pages on gambling and religion in Asia and lucky colors, charms and amulets cover the background.
Is praying for numbers legal?
Praying is legal everywhere; the question is what you do with the number afterward. Buying the official government or charity lottery ticket from a licensed agent is a legal, state-run activity in Thailand8. The practical risk sits with anything outside that system: the GLO warns that people who buy through unofficial online platforms or vending machines, without holding the physical ticket, may be unable to claim prize money if they win9. So a number from a tree spirit is fine; a ticket you cannot actually hold is not.
Draw schedule and how the 6-digit format works
The GLO draws twice a month, on the 1st and 16th of every month, with fixed exceptions: the New Year's draw is held on December 30 each year, the Teachers' Day draw on January 17, and the Labour Day draw on May 2, and draws are moved if they fall on an important religious day1. Draws that land on weekends or holidays shift to the next working day, so it is worth checking the official schedule around those dates.
| Draw | Date | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Regular draws | 1st and 16th of each month | Moved to the next working day if they fall on a weekend or holiday1 |
| New Year draw | December 30 | Fixed special draw each year1 |
| Teachers' Day draw | January 17 | Fixed special draw each year1 |
| Labour Day draw | May 2 | Fixed special draw each year1 |
The main prize is a 6-digit number. That format has its own history: the draw was originally 7 digits, and the GLO reduced it to 6 while raising the ticket price from THB 20 to THB 407. From the draw of September 1, 2017, the format changed again, from a pair of tickets at THB 80 (THB 40 each) to a single ticket at THB 80, with prize money unchanged7.
Alongside the main 6-digit prizes there are suffix prizes, and these were introduced deliberately to compete with the underground lottery and overpriced tickets: the 3-digit and 2-digit suffix draws first went on sale in 2006, with 80 draws in the first run7. Today the suffix prizes look like this:
| Prize type | Payout per set (fully sold) | Times drawn |
|---|---|---|
| 3-digit suffix | THB 4,000 | Twice1 |
| 2-digit suffix | THB 2,000 | Once1 |
These suffix prizes are the closest official equivalent to the informal number games that temple rituals often feed, and they are the ones most players asking spirits for "a number" are realistically chasing.
What your chances look like
The GLO is unusually blunt about this. Its own public material describes buying the lottery as "the highest-risk form of investment there is," riskier than stocks, gold, commodities and derivatives8. A full set carries 14,168 prizes against millions of printed tickets, and the headline prizes are a tiny fraction of those1. The suffix prizes are easier to hit but pay small amounts: THB 4,000 for the 3-digit and THB 2,000 for the 2-digit, and those figures shrink if the set does not sell out1.

For comparison, a traditional lottery jackpot in Vietnam was described in local reporting as odds of about one in one million10. Whatever a spirit tree tells you, the arithmetic of the drum does not move. Treat the ticket as the price of taking part in a ritual and a twice-monthly national event, not as a plan.
What a ticket costs and where to buy one
A single government lottery ticket costs THB 807. There is also a digital six-digit government lottery sold through the Paotang app at THB 80 per ticket, and a wider digital lottery program with a stated goal that tickets be bought at no more than 80 baht, so the digital channels are meant to match the paper price11.
Tickets reach the public through two systems: a distributor agent system of 31 million tickets per draw, and an advance purchase and booking system of no more than 69 million tickets, made up of 40,000 books of purchase tickets and 650,000 books of booking tickets2. Where each channel collects its tickets:
- Quota agents in Bangkok: collect at the GLO office at Don Mueang2
- Provincial quota agents: collect at provincial halls or provincial treasury offices2
- Purchase and booking buyers: receive tickets through Thailand Post at post offices nationwide2
On the street, you buy from licensed vendors and stalls, and the charity lottery is sold under GLO announcements of March 14 and May 16, 20196. Retail individuals, disabled persons and advance purchase and booking buyers receive a 12 percent ticket discount2. The GLO prohibits sale in schools12. One warning worth repeating: buy only where you walk away holding the physical ticket, because buyers who do not hold the ticket may be unable to claim a prize9.
Minimum age: 20 for any buyer
In Thailand, lottery buyers must not be under 20 years of age, a limit the GLO applies to protect young people from access, and prize recipients must likewise be at least 2012. The same age applies in Japan, where lottery membership rules exclude anyone under 2013. Vietnam's Vietlott sets its minimum at 1814. Visitors, foreign residents and citizens are all held to the same age rule in Thailand; there is no separate rule for foreigners.
Claiming a prize: 2-year deadline and stamp duty
Winners of the government lottery have 2 years from the draw date to claim; after that, the money goes to state revenue4. Charity lottery winners have 10 years5. Damaged tickets can still be verified, within 2 years from the draw date3.
Claims at the Government Lottery Office, 359 Nonthaburi Road, Tha Sai subdistrict, Mueang Nonthaburi district, Nonthaburi 11000, run Monday to Friday from 07.30 to 15.00, closed on official holidays, with no midday break5. You must book a queue in advance through the online queue system on www.glo.or.th, the GLO Lottery app or a QR code, one queue per person and no more than 200 tickets per queue15. The office handles up to 65,000 tickets per day, split into a morning window from 07.30 to 12.00 for 45,000 tickets and an afternoon window from 12.01 to 15.00 for 20,00016. Prizes can also be claimed through three banks acting for the GLO, with a service charge applied15.
Before payment, stamp duty is deducted at THB 1 for every THB 200 of prize money, or fraction of THB 200, on payments by check or bank transfer3. To check results, use the GLO's check-reward page, the phone lines 0 2528 8899 and 1900 1900 10, the GLO Lottery official app on Android and iOS, or the Glo lottery LINE Official Account; the office controls and verifies the website data but says errors can occur, so confirm with the GLO17.
Taxes and deductions on winnings
On the Thai government lottery, the main deduction is the stamp duty described above. The charity lottery works differently: winners have income tax withheld at source at 1 percent of the prize money when they claim4. That is the full picture for a Thai winner claiming in person; there is no separate filing step mentioned in the claim rules.
Elsewhere the treatment varies a lot, which matters if you chase numbers across borders:
- China: lottery winnings are incidental income under the Individual Income Tax Law. A single winning of up to CNY 10,000 on the welfare or sports lottery is temporarily exempt from individual income tax, and anything above that is taxed at a flat 20 percent on the full amount of each winning18.
- Japan: sports lottery winnings over JPY 500,000 paid by bank transfer have the transfer fee deducted from the winnings20.
Number rituals elsewhere in Asia
Thailand is the most famous home of this habit, but the underlying idea, that numbers can be revealed rather than chosen, appears across the region. Here is what the official games offer wherever your ritual number comes from:

| Country | Game | How to play | Draw days | Entry price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| China | 7-star (7星彩) | Pick a 6-digit number from 000000 to 999999 plus one digit from 0 to 1421 | See official schedule | Varies |
| China | Super Lotto (大乐透) | Official sports lottery draw | Monday, Wednesday, Saturday22 | Varies |
| Japan | Loto 6 | Pick numbers on an official takarakuji ticket | Monday and Thursday23 | Varies |
| Japan | Football lottery WINNER | Single-match entry | Per match schedule | JPY 20024 |
| Vietnam | MEGA 6/45 | Pick 6 numbers from 01 to 45; jackpot at least 12 billion dong26 | Wednesday, Friday, Sunday at 18h00 | VND 10,00026 |
| Vietnam | LOTTO 5/35 | Open to players 18 or older; check at checkwin machines or on the SMS app14 | See official schedule | Varies |
In China, the state treats lottery as a licensed business, and no unit or individual may issue or sell lottery tickets without state approval; unauthorized online sales in the name of lottery are cracked down on27. So a number obtained at a temple can only legally be played on an official welfare or sports lottery ticket bought at a licensed outlet.
In Japan, public lottery (takarakuji) is legal as a special case carved out of the Penal Code's lottery prohibition, on the justification that it is an act authorized by law13. Japan also has its own long history of temple lotteries, which you can read about in when temple lotteries (tomikuji) were banned in Japan.
Vietnam's traditional number culture runs much deeper than the official games, as our page on the 36 animals lottery shows.
In India, the state of Kerala runs its own legal draws, but the official FAQ is explicit that 2-digit, 3-digit and 4-digit lotteries based on Kerala draw results are not permissible in Kerala29. That is a useful illustration of the line that recurs across Asia: the state game is fine, the informal number game built on top of it is not, no matter where you believe the numbers came from.
Help for lottery addiction: GLO Call Center 0 2528 9999
If lottery play is causing problems, or you simply have questions about tickets, draws or claims, the Government Lottery Office runs a Call Center at 0 2528 99996. For status inquiries by successful advance buyers and reservers, the same number operates from 07.30 to 15.3030. For lost ticket hold inquiries, the GLO Law Office can be reached at 0 2528 90135. The GLO's own advice is worth taking to heart: it ranks the lottery as the highest-risk purchase you can make, above stocks, gold and commodities8. A temple visit for luck is a pleasant ritual; a budget you cannot afford, spent twice a month on a 1-in-millions chance, is a problem worth a phone call.
Common Questions
What is the GLO's address and opening hours for prize claims?
The Government Lottery Office is at 359 Nonthaburi Road, Tha Sai subdistrict, Mueang Nonthaburi district, Nonthaburi 11000. The prize payment office is open Monday to Friday from 07.30 to 15.00, closed on official holidays, with no midday break. You must book a queue online in advance.
How do I check the draw results safely?
Check results on the GLO website's check-reward page, by phone at 0 2528 8899 or 1900 1900 10, in the GLO Lottery official app on Android and iOS, or via the Glo lottery LINE Official Account. The office verifies website data but says errors can occur, so confirm with the GLO.
What happens if a prize is not fully sold or claimed?
If tickets in a set are not all sold, each prize amount is reduced proportionally. Unclaimed prizes go to state revenue after the deadline, two years for the government lottery and ten years for the charity lottery.
Can foreigners buy Thai lottery tickets?
Yes. There is no citizenship restriction mentioned in the rules; prize money is paid to whoever holds the winning ticket and presents it to claim. Buyers must be at least 20 years old, and you should keep the physical ticket to claim any prize.
How is the charity lottery different from the regular lottery?
The GLO prints two ticket types: the government lottery and the charity lottery. The charity lottery checks its results against the government lottery draw of the same period, gives winners ten years to claim instead of two, and withholds 1 percent income tax from prize money.
How much prize money is paid in cash versus check or transfer?
Prizes paid by check or bank transfer have stamp duty deducted first, at one baht for every 200 baht of prize money or fraction of 200. Claims through bank agents also carry a service charge.
Who runs the Government Lottery Office?
The GLO is a Thai state enterprise under the Ministry of Finance, a juristic person under the Government Lottery Office Act B.E. 2517. Its founding date is April 5, 1939, when the cabinet moved the lottery into the Ministry of Finance.
