Claim deadlines at a glance: 2 years for government lottery, 10 years for charity lottery

The deadline depends entirely on which ticket you are holding. Thailand's Government Lottery Office prints two types of ticket, and they carry very different claim windows5.

For a government lottery ticket, you have 2 years from the draw date to claim. The clock starts on the day of the draw, not the day you check your numbers. If you do not come forward within those 2 years, the prize is treated as unclaimed and the money is sent to the state as revenue1.

For a charity lottery ticket, the window is much longer: 10 years from the draw date. The same rule applies at the end of it. Once 10 years pass, the prize money goes to state revenue1.

Both deadlines are set out in the same place in the official game rules, and the wording is identical apart from the number of years. That makes it easy to remember: government lottery, 2 years; charity lottery, 10 years6.

A few practical points about how the clock works:

  • The period runs from the draw date, not from when you bought the ticket or when you noticed the win.
  • It applies to every prize tier, from the two-digit last prize up to the first prize.
  • The prize is paid to the person who holds the winning ticket and presents it to claim1.
  • There is no grace period and no extension published for either type.

If you are used to other countries, Thai windows are generous. Vietnam, for example, gives winners 30 days from the date the results are determined, and Vietlott gives 60 days from the date the result is confirmed7. Thailand's 2 years for the government lottery is far longer than either.

What happens to unclaimed prizes after the deadline

When the claim period runs out, the prize is not re-drawn and it is not handed to another player. The money is sent to the state as revenue1. That is the whole of it: the ticket stops being worth anything, and the funds leave the lottery's prize pool.

What happens to unclaimed prizes after the deadline

This is a common pattern across Asia. In China, unclaimed lottery prizes are treated as forfeited and the money goes into the lottery public welfare fund8. Malaysia's Special Cash Sweep forwards winnings unclaimed after 6 months to the Ministry of Finance9. Thailand's version sends the money to state revenue instead of a welfare fund, but the practical result for the player is the same: after the deadline, there is nothing to collect.

What this means for you in practice:

  • Check your tickets. A winning ticket sitting in a drawer past the deadline is worth nothing.
  • Do not assume someone will contact you. The prize is paid to whoever presents the winning ticket, so it is on you to come forward1.
  • Keep the ticket intact. It is the ticket itself that carries the claim, so damage or loss matters.
  • Note the draw date. That is the date the 2 year or 10 year clock starts from.

Government Lottery or charity lottery: which ticket do you hold

Since the draw of May 2, 2019, the Government Lottery Office has printed two types of ticket: government lottery tickets and charity lottery tickets10. They look similar enough that people mix them up, and the difference decides whether you have 2 years or 10 years to claim.

The government lottery is the standard Thai ticket, the one sold at THB 80 a ticket in the single ticket format used since the draw of September 1, 2017. Before that, tickets were sold in pairs at THB 80 for two halves, up from THB 202. The official price today is THB 80, and selling above that price is against the rules11.

The charity lottery is the second type printed by the same office10. Charity lottery prizes carry a withholding tax: personal income tax is withheld at source at 1 percent of the charity lottery prize, collected from the winner and remitted to the Revenue Department2.

So the quick way to tell which deadline applies to you:

Ticket typeClaim deadlineNotes
Government lottery2 years from draw dateStandard THB 80 ticket1
Charity lottery10 years from draw date1 percent withholding tax on the prize2

How to claim a prize at the Government Lottery Office

The Government Lottery Office is at 359 Nonthaburi Road, Tha Sai subdistrict, Mueang Nonthaburi district, Nonthaburi province 1100012. That is in Nonthaburi, just outside central Bangkok, not in the city center.

How to claim a prize at the Government Lottery Office

You cannot simply walk in. Prize claims at the office require an online queue booking made in advance through the GLO website at www.glo.or.th, the GLO Lottery app, or a QR code. The rule is one queue per person, for up to 200 tickets13.

The office handles a large volume. Capacity is 65,000 tickets per day, split into a morning session from 07:30 to 12:00 with 45,000 tickets, and an afternoon session from 12:01 to 15:00 with 20,000 tickets, Monday to Friday2.

How the payment works depends on the size of your prize:

  • Prizes of THB 20,000 or less are paid in cash3.
  • Prizes over THB 20,000 are paid by check from Krungthai Bank's Government Lottery Office branch, with stamp duty already deducted3.

There are also bank channels. Prize payments are made through the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives, Krungthai Bank and the Government Savings Bank13. The three banks representing the office for prize claims are the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives, Krung Thai Bank and Government Savings Bank13.

If you deposit a winning ticket rather than claiming in person, payment is made within 3 business days after the office has verified the tickets and there is no obstacle to payment, by check deposit or bank transfer to Krungthai Bank14.

A simple checklist before you go:

  1. Book your queue online at www.glo.or.th, through the GLO Lottery app, or by QR code. One queue per person, up to 200 tickets13.
  2. Bring the winning ticket itself. The prize is paid to the holder who presents it1.
  3. Come on a weekday. Claims run Monday to Friday, morning or afternoon session2.
  4. Know your prize size. Under THB 20,000 is cash; over that is a Krungthai Bank check3.
  5. Allow for verification. Deposited tickets are paid within 3 business days once verified14.

Draw results are broadcast from 14:30 until about 16:00, so if you are checking numbers on draw day, that is when they appear15. For more on where tickets are sold and how the draws run, see where to buy lottery tickets and how lottery draws work.

Helpline, website and help channels for problem gambling

The Government Lottery Office runs help channels for people who may have problems with, or be at risk of, lottery addiction, working with outside organizations that have expertise in the area16.

If you want to talk to someone, these are the numbers:

  • Gambling help line 1323. A call center run by the Department of Mental Health, Ministry of Public Health of Thailand. Free call or web chat, available every day, 24 hours17.
  • Gambling consultation line 0 2528 9999, press 9. For people in Thailand who feel anxiety from gambling, and for their family members18.
  • Social Help Center Hotline 1300. 24/7, free and confidential support and information19.
  • GLO Call Center 0 2528 9999. For questions about tickets, prizes and claiming5.

Support through these lines is free and confidential20. If you want to understand more about spending limits and self checks, there is a guide to lottery responsible play, and for the wider picture of how state lotteries work in the region, see lotteries in Asia.
