What the sports lottery offers: WINNER, toto and BIG

Japan's sports lottery, usually called sports toto, is a state-run betting system that puts money back into sport. It is operated under the Sports Promotion Voting Law, and the operator describes it as a way to bet on football and basketball results rather than on horses or keirin2. The official guidance splits the whole thing into three broad types: WINNER, toto and BIG1. A separate operator page describes four families, adding DUNK to the list, because DUNK is the basketball member of the same group5.

The practical difference between them comes down to how much work you do. With toto you study the fixtures and predict results yourself. With BIG you do nothing at all, because a computer randomly selects the football results for you2. WINNER sits in the middle: you predict one match result, or you predict which team will win a league or tournament, and you can buy from a single match6. DUNK is the basketball equivalent of BIG, where a computer randomly predicts the results of designated basketball matches5.

All four are sold through the same network of sports lottery counters, and all four pay out through the same channels. What changes is the ticket, the price and the size of the prize.

The games you can play: BIG, toto, WINNER, DUNK and GROWING

The official guidance divides the sports lottery into four broad types: DUNK, BIG, toto and WINNER5. Each one covers a different sport or a different level of effort.

BIG comes in more than one size. The 14-match version has six prize tiers, from all 14 numbers matching down to five misses, and the 12-match version has six tiers out of 12 numbers7. The 14-match game pays a theoretical first prize of about JPY 1,000,000 when there is no carryover, and up to JPY 300,000,000 when there is7.

GROWING is not a game you buy on its own. It is the prize structure behind the BIG family: 50 percent of sales goes into the prize fund, and that fund is split across the tiers9. For the 14-match BIG, the split is 80 percent to first prize, 7 percent to second, 2 percent to third, 3 percent to fourth, 3 percent to fifth and 5 percent to sixth7. Prize amounts are theoretical values and move with sales and the number of winning tickets9.

Bet types: BIG-series products, MEGA BIG and WINNER single-match prediction

BIG and MEGA BIG are the simplest products in the family. You buy a ticket, a computer randomly selects the football results, and you wait. There is nothing to fill in and no form to study2. MEGA BIG is sold weekly and holds the record for the highest first prize in Japanese lottery history, excluding public sports racing10. When a carryover occurs the top prize can reach JPY 1,200,000,000; without one, the normal maximum first prize is JPY 720,000,0004.

toto is the prediction game. You predict the results of 13 matches, marking one selection per match: a home team win in 90 minutes is "1", a home team loss in 90 minutes is "2", and anything else is "0"11. If you are not confident about every match, you can use the multi bet option and mark a double (two possible results) or a triple (three possible results) for a single match12. There is also a lighter version where you predict only the two or three matches you are confident about, or your favorite team's matches, and leave the rest to a computer prediction13.

WINNER splits into two lottery types: single-match prediction and competition prediction6. Single-match prediction covers one match only, and you simply predict the result of the match you choose14. Competition prediction asks you to name the winning team of a league or tournament, and for basketball it asks for both the champion and the runner-up14. The designated matches for single-match prediction can change, so check before you buy14.

How to play each product

toto. Decide whether you are playing the standard 13-match game or the lighter version where the computer fills in the matches you skip13. For the standard game, mark "1", "2" or "0" for each of the 13 matches, or use double and triple selections on the matches you are unsure about11. You can buy at a sports lottery counter, at a convenience store terminal, or online15.

BIG and MEGA BIG. No prediction is needed. Buy a ticket at a sports lottery counter or a participating lottery shop displaying the sports lottery logo, or online through a partner site16. Partner sites include Rakuten Bank, PayPay Bank, Yahoo! toto, Rakuten toto, SMBC toto, au PAY toto, Docomo SMTB Net Bank, Jibun Bank and Docomo Sports Lottery17. MEGA BIG is sold weekly10.

WINNER. The purchase method differs from BIG, toto and DUNK, so use the WINNER guide rather than the general one3. You can buy from the official site, a partner site, or a lottery counter6. Single-match prediction lets you buy from just one match, so the entry cost is low14.

DUNK. Buy at a nearby sports lottery counter or a participating lottery shop, marked with the sports lottery logo18. There is nothing to predict, because the computer handles the selection5.

One practical note for anyone used to Korean or Chinese sports betting: the Korean Sports Toto fixed-odds ticket works differently, with result-style bets covering home win, draw or loss, winning margins, handicap results, over/under totals, odd/even totals and specific events such as first scorer19. Japan's toto does not work that way. It is a 13-match prediction game, not a fixed-odds single bet.

Prizes and what you can win

The headline numbers are large. toto pays a maximum of JPY 500,000,000 when a carryover occurs, and normally a maximum first prize of JPY 100,000,0004. MEGA BIG reaches JPY 1,200,000,000 with a carryover and JPY 720,000,000 without one4. The 14-match BIG pays up to JPY 300,000,000 with no carryover, and its theoretical first prize is about JPY 1,000,0007. DUNK offers up to JPY 300,000,0008.

Prizes and what you can win

WINNER works differently from all of these. Its single-match football lottery has only one prize tier, and the payout is your purchase amount multiplied by the odds14. The winning probability is 1 in 18 for football, because there are 18 outcome options: 14 exact score options, a home win by four or more goals, an away win by four or more goals, and a draw with both teams scoring three or more goals14. For basketball the winning probability is 1 in 1614. There is no carryover in WINNER single-match prediction14. Competition prediction payouts vary by product, depending on how many options there are14.

Collecting a prize depends on the amount.

  • Prizes of JPY 100,000 or less per ticket can be collected at booths, credit unions or Seven-Eleven.
  • Amounts over JPY 100,000 must go through a credit union.
  • Amounts over JPY 500,000 require a credit union procedure, with cash available after 12 business days or by bank transfer.
  • Seven-Eleven has a payout limit of JPY 15,000, and some booths cap payouts at JPY 10,000 or JPY 50,000 per ticket1.

If you bought online, the winnings are paid automatically into your account1.

Where to buy tickets and check results

You have three routes. Lottery counters, sometimes called kushiba, are the traditional option and typically open from 8:00 to 23:00, though hours vary by store1. Convenience store multimedia terminals and copiers sell toto and BIG only1. The official sports lottery website and its partner sites sell everything and run 24 hours a day1.

If you buy at a shop, you can collect winnings at credit unions that handle the sports lottery, at lottery counters that allow payouts, and at Seven-Eleven15. If you buy online, the money comes to you1.

Checking results is straightforward. If you bought on the official site, log in to Club toto, click "購入履歴・当せん確認" on the top page, then select "詳細確認" to see your results, with filtering by product, purchase period and result20. If you bought at a shop, go to the top page, click "当せん確認", select the lottery type and draw number, enter the reference number and click "結果を表示"21. You can also check at lottery counters and Seven-Eleven21. If you bought through a site other than the official one, check on the site where you bought20.

For DUNK, results can be checked in four ways, and store checking is only available at lottery sales offices22. Winnings from store purchases can be collected at credit unions handling the sports lottery and at some lottery sales offices that allow refunds22. Newspapers print DUNK results as numbers in one horizontal row, while your ticket is one combination of numbers in a vertical row, so read across to compare18.

If you are new to Japanese betting generally, it helps to start with the wider picture of what gambling is available in Japan and how sports betting works there before you pick a product. The sports lottery is one part of a larger system that also includes Takarakuji public lotteries and number games such as Loto 6, Loto 7 and Mini Loto.

Common Questions

What is the difference between toto, BIG and WINNER?

toto asks you to predict the results of 13 designated football matches yourself. BIG needs no prediction at all, because a computer picks the results for you. WINNER is a single-match or competition product where you predict one match result or a league champion, and it is bought differently from the other three.

What is MEGA BIG?

MEGA BIG is the highest-paying version of the BIG family. When a carryover occurs the first prize can reach JPY 1,200,000,000, the highest amount in Japanese lottery history excluding public sports racing. It is sold weekly, and normally the top prize is capped at JPY 720,000,000.

Is there a basketball lottery game?

Yes. DUNK is a basketball lottery where a computer randomly selects the results of designated basketball matches, so you do not predict anything. WINNER also covers basketball, with single-match prediction and competition prediction for leagues such as B.PREMIER and B.ONE.

What is DUNK?

DUNK is the basketball member of the sports lottery family. A computer randomly predicts the results of designated basketball matches, so there is nothing to study. Tickets are sold at sports lottery counters, and the top prize reaches JPY 300,000,000.

What is GROWING?

GROWING is not a separate game you buy. It is the name used for the prize structure of the BIG family, where 50 percent of sales goes into the prize fund. The BIG 14-match game splits that fund across six prize tiers, from all 14 numbers correct down to five misses.

Can you bet on a single match with WINNER?

Yes. WINNER single-match prediction lets you buy from just one match and predict its result. Football gives you 18 outcome options with a 1 in 18 chance, and basketball gives you 16 options with a 1 in 16 chance. The payout is your stake multiplied by the odds.

Where can I buy sports lottery tickets?

You can buy at sports lottery counters and some lottery shops displaying the logo, at convenience store terminals for toto and BIG, and on the official sports lottery website or its partner sites. Online sales run 24 hours a day, while counters typically open from 8:00 to 23:00.
