Club toto: Membership, Online Purchase and Terms

Club toto is the free membership program for Japan's sports lottery, with no entrance or annual fee. Members buy tickets on the official site 24 hours a day, earn 1 point per JPY 100, and get winnings transferred automatically to their bank account.

What Club toto is

Club toto is the membership service attached to Japan's sports lottery, the toto family of games run through the Japan Sport Council. It is not a separate game and it is not a betting account in the usual sense. It is a free membership that sits on top of the sports lottery and changes how you buy, how you collect and what you get back in points5.

The membership is free to use and described by the operator as a convenient, good value service. Joining gives you three practical things: points on the sports lottery tickets you buy, automatic transfer of winnings to your bank account, and the ability to buy on the official site at any time rather than only when a lottery counter is open6.

You do not need Club toto to play. Tickets can be bought at lottery counters whether or not you are a member, but reserving a purchase on the site and paying at a shop requires Club toto membership7. What you lose by not joining is the points, the automatic payout and the online purchase route8.

If you are new to the game itself rather than the membership, the mechanics of toto-style pools are covered in sports lotteries explained.

Membership: free, with no joining or annual fee

Joining costs nothing. There is no entrance fee and no annual fee, and the membership terms say the same thing: the joining fee and annual fee are free1. The official guidance for the sports lottery repeats it, listing the membership cost as free with no joining or annual fee2.

Membership: free, with no joining or annual fee

That means the only money you ever put in is the money you spend on tickets. A single toto entry is JPY 100, so the smallest possible spend is one entry9. Nothing about the membership itself generates a charge, a subscription or a renewal fee.

There are two ways in. If you hold an internet banking account usable on the site and you are 19 or older, you can complete the joining process straight away online3. If you prefer, or if you cannot use the online route, you can apply by mail: download and print the Club toto application form, read and accept the sports lottery terms and the Club toto membership terms, and send it in3.

The mail route asks for proof of age. You send a copy of a document showing your name, date of birth and address. Acceptable documents include:

  • A driver's license, passport, residence card, special permanent resident certificate, photo student ID, My Number card (front only), pension handbook, photo Basic Resident Register card, or certificate of eligibility, with every page that shows those details included3.

If you send an original family register extract, resident record or seal registration certificate, it must have been issued within three months3.

One detail worth knowing before you photocopy anything: do not send documents showing your My Number. If a document unavoidably carries it, black the number out on both sides. Any document that arrives showing the number is destroyed promptly after receipt3.

Membership cards have no expiry date set, though the operator may set one without notice if it considers it necessary1.

Minimum age: 19 or older to join

You must be 19 or older to become a Club toto member. The official guidance lists the joining requirement as being aged 19 or above, and the membership terms state that persons under 19 cannot become members2. The online joining route repeats the same threshold: you need an eligible internet banking account and you must be 19 or older3.

This is the age for the membership. It is also the age that matters for the sports lottery itself, so there is no gap where you could buy but not join, or join but not buy.

For context, 19 is on the higher side for the region. The Hong Kong Jockey Club restricts gambling to those aged 18 or above, and no one under 18 may bet or enter premises where bets are accepted8. South Korea's Sports Toto sets its minimum at 19, the same as Club toto10.

If you are applying by mail and you are close to the threshold, the age check is done from the documents you send, so the date of birth on your ID is what counts3.

Buying tickets online: 24-hour purchases and payment methods

The main practical reason people join is to buy on the official site. Members can buy sports lottery tickets 24 hours a day, excluding system maintenance times11. The same wording appears across the product pages: toto, BIG, DUNK and WINNER all let members buy at any time of day on the site6.

Buying on the site requires Club toto membership. That applies whether you pay online or choose convenience store payment7. There is no guest checkout for the official site purchase route.

The sales window is not quite the same as the buying window, though. For toto, if the fixtures are not J.League matches, online sales close at 19:00 on the final sales day. If they are J.League matches, you can buy until 10 minutes before the first designated match kicks off7. So the 24-hour rule describes when you can log in and buy during the sales period, not a guarantee that a ticket is available right up to kickoff.

Payment methods on the official site are credit card, JCB debit card, or a Rakuten Bank account3. There is an important condition attached. Only cards whose charges are automatically debited from a bank account qualify, because winnings are paid by automatic transfer. Cards paid by salary deduction or collected at a convenience store cannot be used3.

If you join by mail, you can add online payment and convenience store payment later, so a mail application is not a permanent limit on how you buy3.

Points: earning rate and expiry

Points are the everyday reason to use your membership rather than buying as a guest. You earn 1 point per JPY 100 of sports lottery tickets purchased1. The official guidance states the same rate: buy a ticket and 1 point accrues for every JPY 100 of the purchase price2.

Points accrue on purchases at stores and on the official site, so a counter purchase counts as long as you identify yourself as a member4. There is a catch at the counter: if you buy at a lottery sales office or a convenience store without showing your member card, no points are awarded1. If you reserved the purchase online while logged in, the login carries your member information, so points are credited at the shop without you having to show the card15.

Accumulated points can be entered into the points program, which is the redemption side of the scheme4.

Points expire. The rule is that a point lasts until December 31 of the third year, counting the year it was granted as year one1. It is a use-them-or-lose-them arrangement, not a balance that sits indefinitely.

One exclusion to know about: points are not earned on purchases made through Rakuten Bank, PayPay Bank, Yahoo! toto, Rakuten toto, SMBC Direct, au PAY toto, Shinsei SBI Net Bank, Jibun Bank or the Docomo sports lottery site2. If you buy through one of those partner routes, the purchase does not feed your Club toto balance.

Automatic payout of winnings to your bank account

This is the feature that saves the most hassle. Winnings on tickets bought on the official site are transferred automatically to your bank account, so there is nothing to claim and nothing to forget4. The same automatic transfer applies across the product pages, including toto, BIG, DUNK and WINNER6.

The limit is important: automatic transfer applies only to purchases made on the official site. It does not apply to tickets bought anywhere else4.

Because winnings are paid by transfer, you need a bank account to receive them3. That is also why the card rule exists: only cards debited automatically from a bank account can be used, since the payout runs through the same account3.

Store purchases work differently. Tickets bought at lottery sales outlets, Lawson, FamilyMart, 7-Eleven or Ministop and paid in cash are collected at the shop in cash, and winnings are not automatically transferred16. If you claim through an agent store that handles refunds, the winnings are transferred to your designated account after the prescribed procedures, in about ten to twenty days16.

For larger amounts there is a further step. For winnings over JPY 500,000, you complete the procedure at a credit union that handles the sports lottery, and you can choose to receive the money directly at the counter 12 business days later or by transfer to a designated account16.

Even if you bought at a store, being a member still helps with checking. Club toto members who bought at a store can check results through the member menu on the official site17.

Logging in, purchase limits and account security

Logging in is simple. Go to the sports lottery official site and click the login button at the top right of the page17. From there you can buy, review your purchase history and confirm results. If you bought on the site, you can open your purchase history and winning confirmation, then select the detail view to check a result, filtering by product, purchase period and winning result10.

On limits, the membership terms say the maximum purchase amount per credit or debit card, and per official site reservation with convenience store payment, is set separately by the Center1. In other words, the ceiling is not a fixed number printed in the terms; it is set by the operator and can differ by payment method. For the game itself, a single toto entry is JPY 100, and the Single purchase method allows 1 to 100 entries, with a maximum of 10 entries on identical predictions in one purchase18.

On security, one member ID is issued per member1. Registering for the identity authentication service helps prevent unauthorized use such as impersonation from stolen credit card details3. The terms are blunt about the other side of this: if your member ID or password is used by a third party, the Center bears no responsibility1. Your member card may only be used by the member who signed it, and it cannot be transferred, lent, pledged or otherwise offered to third parties as security1.

Common Questions

How much does Club toto cost to join?

Nothing. Joining is free, and there is no annual fee either. You pay only for the sports lottery tickets you choose to buy. Membership itself gives you points on purchases, automatic prize transfers and the ability to buy on the official site.

How old do I have to be to become a Club toto member?

You must be 19 or older. Applicants under 19 cannot become members. If you apply by mail, you will need to send a copy of an ID document showing your name, date of birth and address, such as a driver's license or passport.

How do I log in to my Club toto account?

Go to the sports lottery official site and click the login button at the top right of the page. From there you can buy tickets, check your purchase history and confirm results. Members who bought tickets at a store can also check those results through the member menu.

How many member IDs can one person have?

One. The membership terms state that one member ID is issued per member. If you register for the identity authentication service, it helps prevent unauthorized use such as impersonation from stolen credit card details.

What payment methods can I use on the official site?

You can pay by credit card, JCB debit card or a Rakuten Bank account. Only cards whose charges are automatically debited from a bank account qualify, because winnings are paid by automatic transfer. Cards paid by salary deduction or convenience store collection cannot be used.

When do my Club toto points expire?

Points last until December 31 of the third year, counting the year they were granted as year one. So points earned in 2026 run to December 31, 2028. Points are not awarded on purchases made through partner bank and wallet sites.

What happens to my points if I withdraw from Club toto?

The membership terms do not provide for carrying points over once you leave the program, so treat them as tied to your membership. Points are also not awarded if you buy at a lottery counter or convenience store without showing your member card.

Are winnings transferred automatically for tickets bought at a store?

No. Automatic transfer applies only to tickets bought on the official site. Store-bought tickets are paid in cash at the shop, and for larger amounts you handle the claim at a credit union, either at the counter or by transfer to a designated account.
