Bet types: fixed odds and pari-mutuel
HKJC runs two families of football bet: fixed odds and pari-mutuel. The fixed odds side is the one most people picture, where the price is shown to you before you commit. The pari-mutuel side pools all stakes on a selection and divides the pool among winners, so the final payout depends on how much money came in. The Club decides from time to time which pari-mutuel types it will offer on a given match or set of matches3.

On the fixed odds side, the menu is wide. Home/Away (HAD) is the plain three-way result bet. Handicap adjusts one side by a goal margin. Correct Score asks you to name the exact full-time score, with listed options running from 1:0, 2:0, 2:1 and so on through the home-win scores, the away-win scores, and the draw scores 0:0, 1:1, 2:2 and 3:3, plus "Others" buckets for each outcome5. There are also total goals, team total goals, first team to score, odd/even goals, goalscorer markets, half-time markets, and corner markets7.
Parlays are where the range really opens up. A mixed parlay lets you combine different bet types across different matches, from 2 legs up to a maximum of 85. You can mix Home/Away, first half Home/Away, handicap, first half handicap, total goals, team total goals, correct score, first team to score, odd/even goals, first, last, next and anytime goalscorer, half/full, next team to score, and the corner markets, all in one ticket7. A straight HAD parlay also runs to a maximum of 8 matches8.
Correct Score has its own multiple format. You can bet the full-time score of up to six matches, and the multiple works like a standard combination: a 3 x 1 is one bet running through three legs, while a 3 x 7 is seven separate bets made up of three singles, three doubles and one treble5.
In-play betting is available at the operator's discretion on any football bet or tournament bet4. In-play handicap and in-play first half handicap settle on the full-time result in normal playing time adjusted by the handicap, not the score at the moment you placed the bet6. The minimum bet on in-play handicap is HKD 2006.
Who can bet: minimum age 18 and entry rules
The minimum age for HKJC football betting is 18. No person under 18, and no person in school uniform, may place a football bet, receive a dividend or refund, or enter a betting location unless the operator authorizes it3. The same 18-and-over rule applies across the Club's gambling products in Hong Kong1, and no person under 18 is allowed to bet or enter premises where bets are accepted9.
This applies to everyone: Hong Kong citizens, foreign residents and visitors alike. There is no separate visitor rule that lowers the age or relaxes the entry bar. If you are visiting Hong Kong and want to place a football bet, you need to be 18 or older, and you cannot walk into a betting location in school uniform.
When you open a betting account, you must provide proof of age, and you confirm your identity with your account number and password each time you use it10. So the age check is not just a sign on the door. It is built into the account itself.
How to place a bet: payment methods, currencies and ticket rules
You can pay for a football bet in three ways: cash, cash voucher, or betting account3. That is the whole list unless the operator announces otherwise. Credit card betting is not accepted, and the Club does not lend money to customers12. The football betting license conditions also state that credit card bets must not be accepted13.
Everything is in Hong Kong dollars. All football bets must be made and settled in Hong Kong currency3. There is no option to stake in another currency and no conversion at the counter.
If you are betting on a physical ticket, the rules on filling it in are strict. The ticket must be marked with a blue ballpoint pen4. Each selection is marked with a vertical stroke, entirely inside the box margins. The ticket must not be folded, and no alteration or correction is permitted3. If you make a mistake, you cannot fix it on the ticket. You take a fresh one.
Beyond the counter, the Club offers a range of betting channels: betting account, telephone betting, customer input terminal, electronic funds transfer, cash vouchers, electronic shroff card, internet betting and electronic wallet2. To open a betting account with e-wallet and internet facilities, you apply in writing on the appropriate form and pay any required deposit and fees at the time of application14.
One practical point on accounts: the Club may charge a fee, at its discretion, for betting accounts that are inactive within a 365-day period or that fall below the minimum deposit required under the rules15.
Payouts: rounding, limits and claim deadlines
Fixed odds payouts are rounded to the nearest 10 cents, up or down, for each winning football bet4. The same rounding applies to dividends and early settlement payments on fixed odds football bets3. Multi-Match HaFu and Double HaFu Score dividends per unit bet are rounded to the nearest dollar instead3. For Double Tote Half-Time and Double Tote Half-Time Treble, the published payout per unit is rounded to the nearest whole dollar, and it will not be less than the bet unit plus one dollar4.
The operator can set maximum and minimum limits. It may impose a maximum or minimum unit stake, a maximum total stake, a maximum dividend payable, a maximum total stake per betting day and a maximum dividend per betting day, and it can change these at its sole discretion without prior notice3. It may also set maximum or minimum unit bet amounts, total bet amounts and maximum payout per ticket, per bet, per bet type and per betting day, again without notice4.
To collect, present your winning ticket or refund claim at any betting location on any betting day within 60 days after the betting day on which the relevant match was held. For a parlay, the clock runs from the last match in the bet3. If you do not claim within 60 days, the winnings or refund are forfeited4.
If you lose a physical ticket, you can ask the Club to identify it, but the request must be made within 7 days after the betting day on which the match was held4. For a damaged ticket, you have 60 days from the betting day4. Where a ticket has been identified as lost or defaced, the operator may instruct the Club to withhold payment until 60 days after the betting day3.
If a published payout turns out to contain an error or miscalculation, the operator may revise it. Holders who have not yet claimed receive the revised payout, and holders who have already claimed may claim the difference under the rules4. Revised payouts not claimed by the deadline, or where satisfactory identification is not provided or the operator's conditions are not accepted, are forfeited4.
What happens when a match is void, early or terminated
If a match is declared void, all football bets on it are declared void and the stakes refunded, with exceptions: bets whose outcome is already determined, bets already settled by early settlement, or cases where the operator decides otherwise16. In practice, single bets are refunded, and parlay legs involving the void match stay valid and are treated as successful at odds of 1.005. The same treatment applies across HAD, handicap, correct score and the other fixed odds types8.
Some markets have their own rules:
- HaFu bets are all refunded in the case of a void match11
- Odd/Even bets are all refunded11
- Anytime Scorer bets are all refunded if the match is declared void, but they stand if the void is declared after the named player has already scored11
- If a match kicks off but is declared void after the first half is complete, first half HAD bets stand and dividends are paid on those that correctly picked the half-time result10
- If all nominated matches in a Multi-Match HaFu are void, any jackpot goes back to the jackpot pool and all Multi-Match HaFu bets are refunded3
If a match is played earlier than scheduled, all football bets the operator accepted before the match started remain valid4. The referee's official score announced immediately after the match is the final result for full-time bets, the referee's half-time result applies to half-time bets, and the referee's extra-time score applies to extra-time bets4.
If a bet type, selection or pool is terminated, all valid bets in it are refunded in full, and the operator has no further liability beyond that refund4. Where a bet fails to be recorded because of facility interference or failure, or a valid bet becomes unidentifiable through later failure or damage, the operator's liability is limited to a refund of the stake collected4.
When the operator can refuse, cancel or void a bet
The supervisor of a betting location may, without giving any reason, refuse money for a bet, cancel acceptance of a bet, or order any person to leave the betting location4. So a bet is not locked in until it is accepted.
The operator can also declare a ticket void if it considers that the bettor knew an event or result, or that a team gained a significant advantage such as a goal, a penalty, an opponent red card or opponent injuries, before the bet was placed or became valid. That applies whether or not the bet won, and the operator's decision is final and binding4.
On the account side, the Club may refuse to open or maintain a betting account, and may suspend or terminate one, without giving any reason to the applicant, account holder or operator15. For the e-wallet, the Club may refuse to provide the facility or process any transaction without giving a reason17, and the operator may instruct the Club to refuse to accept a bet or to withdraw or transfer funds without giving a reason17. The Club may also refuse, without reason, bets, withdrawals or transfers made through the e-wallet14.
Once a football bet is valid, you cannot withdraw it4.
Betting accounts: suspension grounds
A betting account can be suspended or terminated at the Club's discretion, with no reason required15. The same applies to the e-wallet facility, where the Club may refuse to process a transaction without giving a reason17.

The practical grounds that show up in the rules are inactivity and balance. The Club may charge a fee for accounts that are inactive within a 365-day period or that fall below the minimum deposit required under the rules15. Keeping an account active and funded avoids that.
If your account is suspended or terminated, any bets already accepted are still governed by the football betting rules, including the void and refund provisions above. The account decision itself is not something you can appeal through the betting rules.
Penalties for underage bettors
If it is established that a bettor was under 18 at the time of placing a football bet, the bet may be declared void and any dividend or refund forfeited3. The football betting terms say the same: an under-18 backer's bets may be declared void and any dividend or refund forfeited16.
The Club and operator can also require under-18s, people in school uniform, and anyone who assisted or encouraged them, to indemnify them for all liabilities, prosecutions, claims, losses or damages arising from the breach11.
For anyone else, the practical consequence is simple: the age check happens at the account stage and at the door, and a bet placed underage does not pay out.
Common Questions
What is the minimum age for HKJC football betting?
You must be 18 or older to place a football bet, collect winnings or refunds, or enter a betting location. Anyone under 18, or wearing school uniform, is barred. If the Club later establishes you were under 18 when you bet, your bet can be declared void and any winnings or refunds forfeited.
What currency can I use for HKJC football bets?
All football bets must be placed and settled in Hong Kong dollars. You can pay by cash, cash voucher or betting account. Credit card betting is not accepted, and the Club does not lend money to customers.
How long do I have to claim a winning football ticket?
You have 60 days from the betting day on which the match was held, or the last match of a parlay, to present a winning ticket or refund claim at any betting location. After that the winnings or refund are forfeited.
What happens if I lose my football betting ticket?
You can ask the Club to identify a lost physical ticket, but the request must be made within 7 days of the betting day. For a damaged ticket you have 60 days. Payment may be withheld until 60 days after the match.
Can I cancel a football bet after placing it?
No. Once a football bet is valid, you cannot withdraw it. A betting location supervisor can refuse money for a bet or cancel acceptance without giving a reason, but that is the operator's decision, not yours.
Are bets refunded if a match is void?
Yes, in most cases. Single bets on a void match are refunded, and parlay legs count as successful at odds of 1.00. Bets already settled early, or whose outcome was already determined, may stand instead.
