How Long Do I Have to Claim HKJC Football Winnings?

HKJC football winnings and refunds can be collected at any betting location within 60 days of the betting day, or the last match in a parlay. Lost tickets need reporting within 7 days; Mark Six follows 60 days from the draw.

How to claim: in person, by check and by bank transfer

The clock starts on the betting day, not the day you notice you have won. For a single football bet, that is the day the match was held. For an all up football bet, it is the betting day of the last match in the parlay1. From there you have 60 days to present the winning ticket or refund claim at a betting location on any betting day5.

In practice, most people collect in one of three ways.

At a betting location. Walk into any HKJC betting branch or racecourse and present the ticket. The rules say "any betting location," so you are not tied to the branch that sold you the ticket5. Bring the physical ticket with you. The football rules state plainly that a betting ticket must not be folded, so keep it flat in a wallet or envelope rather than a back pocket1.

Into your HKJC account. If you bet online, winnings are automatically deposited into the HKJC e-wallet. The Club says no registration is required even for prizes over HKD 5,000,0006. That removes the collection step entirely for online players, but it also means the 60 day forfeiture rule matters less to you and more to anyone holding a paper ticket.

By bank transfer or check. If you do not already hold a betting account, you cannot simply nominate a bank account on the spot. New applicants must apply in person at any off-course betting branch or racecourse3. Existing account holders can apply online through the registration link and follow its instructions3. Once money is in the account, note that winnings, refunds and rebates credited to the account used for the bet may not be used for further betting until the operator approves it7.

One practical wrinkle: any document or message issued by Telebank, Betting Bank or internet facilities only shows that a transfer instruction was received. It cannot prove the amount or time of the deposit the Club actually received or credited to your account7. If a payment is disputed, the Club's record is what counts, so keep your own ticket and any confirmation.

What happens to unclaimed prizes

Unclaimed football dividends and refunds are forfeited. The rule is blunt: if a dividend is not collected within 60 days of the date the relevant match was held, or a refund is not collected within 60 days of the day the event giving rise to the refund occurred, it is forfeited5. The Chinese language version of the football rules says the same thing: winnings not collected within 60 days of the match day, or refunds not collected within 60 days of the refund event, are forfeited1.

The same 60 day forfeiture applies to revised payouts. If a payout is revised and the eligible ticket holder does not collect within 60 days of the race meeting, or cannot provide identification the operator considers satisfactory, or does not accept the operator's distribution conditions, the unclaimed winnings or rebates are forfeited8.

For Mark Six and other lotteries, the rule is written from the draw date rather than the match date. Winning tickets or refund claims must be presented at a lottery location on any business day within 60 days after the date of the relevant draw, or within 60 days after the date of the last draw for multiple draw entries2.

A few things worth knowing about how the Club handles disputes in that window:

  • If the operator considers that a bettor knew an event or result, or that a team gained a significant advantage such as a goal, a penalty, an opponent red card or opponent injuries, before the bet was placed or became valid, it may declare the ticket void whether or not the bet won. The operator's decision is final and binding1.
  • If a match is played earlier than scheduled, all football bets the operator accepted before the match started remain valid1.
  • If a physical betting ticket is declared void, notice must be posted for at least 24 hours from the time of the announcement at the operator's headquarters or the betting location where the ticket was sold1. The English rules use the same 24 hour minimum5.

Proof of identity and bet records you need

What you need depends on whether you already have a betting account.

If you do not hold one, you must apply in person at any off-course betting branch or racecourse, and bring:

  • Your HKID card or a valid passport3
  • A bank card or bank statement showing your name and your personal bank account number3

If you already hold a betting account, you apply online through the registration link and follow its instructions3. The Club also requires proof of age when a betting account is opened, and account number plus password confirmation when the account is used afterwards9.

For a straightforward counter collection of a paper football ticket, the ticket itself is the record. That is why the lost ticket rules matter so much. A request to identify a lost physical betting ticket must be made to the Club within 7 days after the betting day on which the relevant match was held5. The Chinese rules give the same 7 day window1. A request to identify a damaged ticket is more generous: within 60 days of the betting day on which the match was held1.

While a lost or defaced ticket is being identified, the operator may instruct the Club to withhold payment until 60 days after the betting day on which the relevant match was held5. So even a successful lost ticket claim does not mean same day cash.

For racing, the equivalent rules sit in the horse race betting rules. A request to identify a lost physical betting ticket must be made within 7 days after the date of the relevant race meeting10. The Chinese version repeats the 7 day window for lost tickets and gives 60 days from the race meeting date for damaged tickets8. Revised payouts and rebates follow a 60 day window from the race meeting date, after which unclaimed amounts are forfeited8.

If you are collecting a large amount and want it paid into a bank account rather than taken in cash, sort the account out before the 60 days run down. Opening an account is an in-person process for new applicants, and branches have opening hours.

Deadlines for other HKJC products: racing and Mark Six

Football is not the only HKJC product with a clock on it. Here is how the main ones compare.

A few extra points on the racing side. If a win bet has no finishers, all bets are refunded11. That refund is still subject to the collection rules, so do not assume a refund sits waiting indefinitely.

The Club's licensed products are limited to horse racing, Mark Six and football9. If you are holding a ticket for anything else, it did not come from the HKJC.

For visitors and new arrivals, the practical point is that the 60 day window is short by international standards. Some lotteries elsewhere give winners a year or more. The HKJC football and lotteries rules both use 60 days, and the racing rules use 60 days for damaged tickets and revised payouts. If you are in Hong Kong for a short trip and win, collect before you fly home. Do not assume you can deal with it on a return visit months later.

If you are planning to bet rather than collect, the HKJC fixed odds football betting rules set out how markets settle, and what happens to an HKJC bet if a match is abandoned covers the refund side. Common Questions

How long do I have to claim an HKJC football bet?

You have 60 days from the betting day on which the match was held, or from the last match in a parlay. Present the winning ticket or refund claim at any betting location on any betting day within that window. After 60 days the dividend or refund is forfeited.

Can someone else collect my HKJC winnings?

The rules are written around the ticket holder presenting the ticket at a betting location. If you cannot attend, the practical route is to sort out identification and account details in advance, since the Club withholds payment on identified lost or defaced tickets until 60 days after the betting day.

What happens if I lose my betting ticket?

Report it to the Club within 7 days of the betting day on which the match was held. The Club may then withhold payment until 60 days after that betting day while it checks the claim. A damaged ticket gives you longer, 60 days from the betting day.

Do HKJC winnings expire?

Yes. Football dividends and refunds not collected within 60 days of the relevant match are forfeited. Mark Six winning tickets follow a 60 day rule from the draw, or from the last draw for multiple draw entries. Racing has its own 60 day rule for damaged tickets and revised payouts.

How are unclaimed HKJC prizes used?

The football and lotteries rules simply state that unclaimed dividends, refunds and revised payouts are forfeited. The Club does not publish a separate destination for that money in these rules, unlike some lotteries elsewhere that pass unclaimed prizes to a welfare fund.

Can I claim HKJC winnings by post?

The football and lotteries rules describe presenting winning tickets or refund claims at a betting location or lottery location. Post is not set out as a collection method. If you cannot attend in person, check with the Club directly before the 60 day window closes.

Is there tax on HKJC winnings in Hong Kong?

No betting duty is charged to winners of ordinary lucky draw activities in Hong Kong, and no betting duty document is issued to winners. That is the Inland Revenue Department's stated position for ordinary lucky draws.
