The Lottery in Malaysia

The Lottery in Malaysia

Malaysia's licensed lottery scene is built around three operators, Magnum 4D, Sports Toto and Da Ma Cai, running 4D number draws three days a week, plus Sarawak's Special Cash Sweep. Here is what each offers, what it costs and pays, and how to play.

The three licensed lottery operators

Malaysia's licensed lottery market is dominated by three national operators: Magnum 4D, Sports Toto and Da Ma Cai. All three are licensed by the government to run lottery and number forecast games, and all three sell their tickets through networks of street-level outlets across the country7. Most of their games operate as number-based draws, where you pick digits in the hope of matching the drawn combination8.

Here is how the four licensed operations compare at a glance:

Alongside the big three, Sarawak has its own arrangement. Natural Avenue Sdn. Bhd. acts as the exclusive agent for the Sarawak Turf Club's Special Cash Sweep number forecast lotteries, sold through a separate network of outlets in Sarawak9. The turf clubs themselves, in Selangor, Perak and Penang, also run betting on horse racing, which is where the lottery tradition in Malaysia began.

Each operator has its own games, draw style and prize structure, and we cover each in depth on its own page: Sports Toto games and prizes, Magnum 4D games and prizes and Da Ma Cai games and prizes, plus Big Sweep and Special Cash Sweep for Sarawak.

Sports Toto: games and how to play

Sports Toto sells the widest range of lottery products of the three operators. At any Sports Toto outlet you can buy Toto 4D, Toto 4D Jackpot, Toto 4D Zodiac, Toto 5D, Toto 6D, Star Toto 6/50, Power Toto 6/55 and Supreme Toto 6/584. That means everything from simple four-digit bets to larger lotto-style games where you pick numbers from a bigger pool.

Sports Toto: games and how to play

For the 4D games there are three ways to bet:

  • Standard: a single set of numbers.
  • System Play: starts from a minimum of 3 sets of 4D numbers and covers all combinations of 4D Straight bets, so a System Play ticket costs more but gives you more chances to win on the same draw10.
  • i-System: a flexible entry that combines elements of the other two.

The full detail of how System Play works, with the combinations and costs, is on our Sports Toto how to play page.

Timing is flexible. The earliest you can place a bet on a particular draw is eight draws in advance, and the latest is before 7:00 pm on the draw day itself4. That long betting window is one reason the outlets are busy but rarely frantic.

When you win, small prizes are simple to collect. Any Sports Toto outlet pays out winnings up to RM30,000, subject to availability of funds at the time of the claim, so a big win on a quiet evening may mean coming back the next day or visiting a larger outlet4. Results are published on the operator's website, sportstoto.com.my, and displayed at outlets11.

Magnum 4D: games and how to play

Magnum 4D is the oldest of the number forecast operators and its flagship product is the classic 4D game. Each draw produces 23 winning numbers, and every one of them is randomly drawn using see-through electromechanical drums that are electronically controlled. The draw is conducted using purely mechanical means, with no computers involved, and the whole thing is designed so the public can watch it happen3.

The headline game is Magnum 4D Jackpot. You pick two 4-digit numbers, each from 0000 to 9999, and match them against the drawn numbers. Matching one of the top 3 numbers pays a jackpot prize of RM1,000,000, with a 3rd prize of RM168, a 4th prize of RM68 and a 5th prize of RM2812. The base 4D game also offers easy wins of up to RM3,500 for every RM1 bet3.

System Play lets you cover more combinations:

System PlayTop tierMiddle tierLower tier
SP5RM672RM272RM112
SP9RM1,344RM544RM224
SP10RM1,512RM612RM252

The full breakdown of what each System Play costs and covers is on our Magnum 4D how to play page12.

The jackpots are genuinely life-changing when they land. In March 2026 alone, Magnum reported jackpot wins sold at Century Garden in Johor Bahru, Masai in Johor and Sri Rampai in Setapak, Selangor, including one from a System Play-08 bet of RM5613. That last one is worth pausing on: a RM56 ticket turned into a share of a jackpot worth over RM20 million in total wins across the period.

Claiming depends on the size of the prize:

  • Up to RM49,999: any Magnum 4D outlet.
  • Magnum Life 2nd Prize: any Magnum 4D regional office.
  • Jackpot 1 prizes of RM2,000,000 and above: the head office at Wisma Magnum, 111 Jalan Pudu, Kuala Lumpur, by appointment booked at +603 9212 28003.

Da Ma Cai: games and how to play

Da Ma Cai runs the busiest draw schedule of the three. Regular draws are conducted every Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday at 7:00 pm, and the Ministry of Finance may from time to time grant approval for Special Draws, which are usually held on Tuesdays at 7:00 pm1. That means most weeks you get three draws, and some weeks four.

The game list is long: 1+3D, Super 1+3D, 3D, 1+3D Jackpot, 1+3D Jackpot System Bet, 3D Jackpot, 3D Jackpot System Bet, 3+3D Bonus, BOX, BOXALL, System Bet, System Pair and IBOX14. The core game is 1+3D, where you pick a four-digit number and choose your bet type, "ABC" (Big) or "A" (Small), or play both2.

The 1+3D prizes for a Big bet:

PrizeAmount
1st prizeRM2,500
2nd prizeRM1,000
3rd prizeRM500
Starter prizesRM180
Consolation prizesRM60

The 1+3D Jackpot adds a jackpot layer on top: Jackpot 1 starts at a minimum of RM2,000,000 with no upper limit and cascading at RM30,000,000 and above, while the 3rd prize pays RM168 with a maximum payout of RM10,000,000, the 4th RM68 and the 5th RM282. The 3D Jackpot's 2nd prize carries a maximum payout of RM5,000,0002.

The draw itself is a spectacle worth knowing about. Da Ma Cai uses eight transparent electromechanical drums: one Horse Drum, six Numbers Drums and one Bonus Drum14. First, 10 six-digit numbers are drawn to constitute the 10 consolation winning numbers. Then 13 six-digit numbers are drawn in tandem with the Horse Drum, and the main winning numbers are determined by a designated horse race, certified by external auditors and witnessed by the public: the number carried by the winning horse becomes the 1st prize, the numbers carried by the second and third horses become the 2nd and 3rd prizes, and any number not assigned to a horse becomes a starter prize1. Draws are held at the turf clubs in Selangor, Penang and Perak, at off-course centers and at Wisma Genting in Kuala Lumpur14.

Outlet hours follow the draw calendar:

Day typeOpening hours
Draw days and special draw days8:00 am to 7:00 pm
Non-draw days9:00 am to 1:00 pm
Eve of a special draw day9:00 am to 5:00 pm

You can bet up to 6 draws in advance: the current draw and the next 56.

Claiming follows a tier:

  • Below RM50,000: any Da Ma Cai outlet.
  • Up to RM1,000,000, and fixed-payout prizes where the bonus prize is under RM1,000,000: any Da Ma Cai regional office in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Perak, Melaka or Johor.
  • Exceeding RM1,000,000, and bonus prizes exceeding RM1,000,000: the head office at Wisma Genting, Jalan Sultan Ismail, Kuala Lumpur15.

All prizes can be claimed from the next business day after the draw, and winning tickets are valid for claim within 3 months of the draw date15.

There are five regional offices in the major cities. The Perak office is at 19, Persiaran Greentown 5, Greentown Business Centre, 30450 Ipoh, phone +60 5 253 590016. The others are in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Melaka and Johor, with the Johor office at 204, Jalan Sri Pelangi, Taman Pelangi, Johor Bahru and the Melaka office at 1-2A, Jalan KPMJ 3, Kompleks Perniagaan Musai Jaya, 75400 Melaka16.

Da Ma Cai also runs occasional contests on top of the regular games. Its 35th Anniversary GO Cash Contest, held from October 9 to November 19, 2023, offered 14 grand prizes of RM10,000 and 150 consolation prizes of RM350 in dmcGO top-up credits, with entry by purchasing a RM20 1+3D Jackpot SB5 Lucky Pick ticket at any outlet or through the dmcGO app17. More on all of this is on our Da Ma Cai how to play page.

Sarawak lotteries: Special Cash Sweep and the turf club

Sarawak's lottery scene runs on its own rails. The Sarawak Turf Club's Special Cash Sweep, with Natural Avenue Sdn. Bhd. as exclusive agent, conducts two number forecast games: 1+3D Big/Small and 3D Big9. The 1+3D game asks you to pick a four-digit number from a range of 10,000 numbers between "0000" and "9999"18.

Special Cash Sweep draws are held at 7:00 pm on every draw day, and results are available at the operator's web portal, cashsweep.com.my, after 7 pm on every draw day19. You can check winning numbers by entering a draw date or draw number on the site20. Tickets are sold at Special Cash Sweep Sales Outlets across Sarawak, though on certain days some agents may choose to operate shorter hours19.

Prize claiming in Sarawak is tiered by amount and location:

Below RM2,500Sales outlets in cash, subject to fund availability, or the Kuching office at Central Park
Up to RM100,000Outstation sales outlets, the Sibu Regional Office on Jln Wong King Huo and the Miri Regional Office
Up to RM300,000The Kuching Regional Office
Any amountThe head office on Jln Pending, Kuching

The operator prefers that you come personally to claim19.

The turf club side of Sarawak's gambling world connects to the wider Malaysian racing scene. The Perak Turf Club in Ipoh runs a racing season from January 1 to December 31 each year, with typically 20 to 30 race days scheduled, and each race meeting ranges from a day to 3 days of racing in a month, held on Saturdays and Sundays23. The Selangor Turf Club runs the same year-long season, with meetings of a day to four days of racing in a month24. Both clubs operate off-course betting: Perak on races at the Malaysian turf clubs in Penang and Selangor and overseas clubs in Australia, Hong Kong and Singapore, and Selangor on races at Penang and Perak, including Wednesday night racing from Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore and South Africa23.

A day at the Perak Turf Club is cheap and relaxed. A Grandstand air-conditioned lounge ticket costs RM15, and the racecourse is at Jalan Raja Di Hilir, 30350 Ipoh, with the club reachable at 605-254 808425. We cover the racing side in more depth on our horse racing in Malaysia page, and the Sarawak club on its own Sarawak Turf and Equestrian Club page.

Who can buy a ticket: age and other rules

The rules on who may play are consistent across the operators, with one important exception. You must be at least 21 years old. Sports Toto requires bettors to be 21 and above and non-Muslim4. Magnum 4D allows no person under 21 to purchase a ticket or claim any prizes27. Da Ma Cai bars anyone under 21 and all Muslims from entering its outlets, betting through dmcGO or claiming prizes5. Special Cash Sweep's game rules likewise do not allow any person under 21 to purchase a ticket or claim prizes28.

Who can buy a ticket: age and other rules

The Muslim restriction applies regardless of nationality, so it covers citizens, foreign residents and visitors alike. Some Malaysian states governed by stricter interpretations of Islamic law may also prohibit the sale or claim of lottery tickets to specific groups, regardless of nationality8.

For everyone else, the door is open. Malaysian law does not restrict foreigners from participating in legal lottery games within the country, and tourists and expatriates are legally allowed to purchase lottery tickets, provided they do so from licensed vendors8. Note that Sports Toto's draws are limited to Malaysian citizens and Permanent Residents as participants4, so check the specific game rules at the counter. Operators may ask for identity proof when you claim a prize5, and some offer anonymity options for substantial winnings8.

Scams and illegal tickets to avoid

The licensed operators are safe to buy from. Everything else deserves caution. A well-known scam strategy is selling "winning tickets" at a discount, with the seller claiming they are somehow unable to claim the prize themselves. Only tickets bought from legal Magnum 4D outlets are accepted when claiming prizes, so a discounted "winning ticket" bought on the street is worthless paper27. Purchasing illegal tickets may also result in prosecution by the authorities27.

Illegal lotteries are not a new problem. In British Malaya, "Wah Weh", the practice of selling lottery tickets on the street, was illegal and was considered at the time "the most popular and most dangerous" form of gambling30. The Licensed outlet system that Magnum, Sports Toto and Da Ma Cai run today exists largely to squeeze that black market out, which is why the operators are so strict about only honoring tickets their own central computers have certified14.
