Casinos in Macau: what a visitor finds

Macau packs more casino floor space into one small city than anywhere else. The action splits into two areas: the Cotai Strip, a stretch of reclaimed land between the islands of Taipa and Coloane where the mega-resorts stand shoulder to shoulder, and the Macau Peninsula, the older downtown where the first casino hotels were built and where locals' gaming halls still operate.

The scale is hard to picture until you arrive. The Venetian Macao alone has around 1,176 slot machines and hundreds of tables spread across a gaming area measured in hundreds of thousands of square feet2. Wynn Palace covers about 468,000 square feet of casino space and support areas inside a resort of six million square feet5. Even the smaller properties, like Casino Oceanus with 15 tables, are full-scale casinos by most cities' standards8.

What surprises many first-time visitors is that the casinos are family destinations in disguise. Many casinos have restaurants serving international cuisine, and the resorts around them carry shopping malls, theaters, shows and attractions, so you can visit the properties, eat well and watch the spectacle without ever placing a bet1. The larger casinos also run free direct shuttle bus services to and from border crossings, so getting between them costs nothing7.

For the wider picture of what you can gamble on in the city beyond the casino floor, see gambling in Macau. The industry is run by six licensed operators, covered in Macau's six casino operators, and watched over by a government regulator described in the DICJ, Macau's gaming regulator.

The big resorts on the Cotai Strip

The Cotai Strip is where most visitors end up. The resorts here are enormous, connected in places by walkways and bridges, and each has its own theme.

The Venetian is the one most people photograph first: canals with gondolas run through the shopping area, and the gaming floor is split between exclusive VIP rooms and an expansive mass market area9. City of Dreams sits nearby with its four hotels, retail and a wet stage performance theater11. Studio City leans into its movie theme with entertainment and retail wrapped around the casino11.

MGM Cotai was built with capacity for up to 500 gaming tables, though the actual allocation is decided by the Macau government3. Its sister property on the peninsula is covered below.

Wynn Palace opened in August 2016 and holds 1,706 luxury rooms, suites and villas inside a six-million-square-foot integrated resort5. Its casino space, with support and ancillary areas, runs to about 468,000 square feet5.

Altira Macau and Grand Lisboa Palace: the quieter Cotai side

Not every Cotai property aims at the mass market. Altira Macau in Taipa is an integrated resort that caters to Asian VIP rolling chip customers, with about 230 hotel rooms, 41 gaming tables and 82 gaming machines (Mocha brand)8. It is a small, hotel-like property, a world away from the Strip's crowds.

Grand Lisboa Palace is SJM Resorts' Cotai flagship. You can reach the resort at (853) 8881 8888 or info@grandlisboapalace.com14. SJM also operates the peninsula landmark Grand Lisboa, covered below.

Casinos on the Macau Peninsula

The peninsula is where Macau's casino industry grew up, and the properties here feel different: older streets, smaller footprints, and a mix of locals and visitors.

MGM Macau sits on the peninsula and is the older sibling of MGM Cotai. It has about 346,000 square feet of casino space, 423 gaming tables and more than 1,200 slots, plus nine restaurants4. MGM China operates both properties17.

Sands Macao was the first foreign-operated casino of the modern era and remains a pure gaming property rather than a full resort. Its gaming area runs to about 176,000 square feet2.

Wynn Macau opened on September 6, 2006 and is the original Wynn property in the city, predating Wynn Palace by a decade13. It carries 696 slot machines or similar electronic gaming facilities5.

Grand Lisboa is the golden lotus-shaped tower that defines the peninsula skyline, standing at the junction of Avida da Amizade and the streets around it. It remains one of the best known casinos in Macau and the flagship of the old Lisboa tradition.

The peninsula also carries the older, smaller gaming halls that gave Macau its gambling character, including venues like Casino Kam Pek, Casino Oriental and Casino Golden Dragon, names that go back decades in the city's gaming contracts18.

Satellite casinos and their closing deadline

Satellite casinos are a Macau peculiarity: gaming halls owned by third parties but operated under a big concessionaire's license, usually attached to hotels on the peninsula. They are covered in full in satellite casinos in Macau.

The era is ending. Operators notified the Macau government on June 9, 2025 that the satellite casinos would cease operation by the end of that year, and as of late October 2025 only seven satellites had not yet announced their closing date19. If you want to see one of these smaller, more local gaming halls, the window is closing fast.

Who can enter: the 21-year minimum age

The legal age of entry to casinos in Macao is 21, and persons under 21 are not allowed to enter7. The rule is set by Law No. 10/2012, which raised the age from 18, and it applies to everyone, residents and visitors alike20. Staff check identification at casino entrances, so carry your passport.

One nuance worth knowing: the 21 age applies to casinos, but horse racing, football and basketball betting in Macau remain at 1822. The full rules, including what counts as acceptable identification, are in casino entry rules in Macau.

Games on the floor: baccarat, blackjack, sic bo and slots

Macau law permits 24 games of fortune in casinos, including baccarat, railway baccarat, blackjack, craps, sic bo, fan tan, pai gow, roulette, five-card poker, mahjong variants and more23. In practice, baccarat dominates: most tables on any floor are baccarat, and it is the game the whole city's economy is built on.

Baccarat tables in Macau also carry a Lucky Six side bet, added in 201824.

Blackjack tables in Macau carry a table sign and six or more seats, use one or more decks of 52 cards dealt from a shoe or metal dealing box, and some offer streak bets with special chips25.

For the deeper guides, see baccarat in Macau, blackjack in Macau, sic bo, slot machines in Macau, fan tan, pai gow and traditional Chinese games in Macau, mahjong in Macau and the overview in casino games in Macau.

Poker players have a dedicated home too: PokerStars LIVE Macau sits on the main casino floor of City of Dreams on Estrada do Istmo in Cotai, running no-limit hold'em and pot-limit Omaha cash games, daily tournaments and series such as the Macau Poker Cup and the Red Dragon, with food and drink served right at the table26. Mocha Clubs: gaming machines outside the casinos

Slot machines are an increasingly popular pastime in Macao and are available in slot lounges and most casinos6. The lounges, known as Mocha Clubs, offer the newest slot machine games in a comfortable setting, generally with a 24-hour coffee shop and food and beverage service1.

The Mocha brand belongs to Melco Resorts, which runs the clubs alongside its casinos. In total the Mocha Clubs carry 876 electronic gaming machines, with locations including8:

  • Mocha Grand Dragon
  • Mocha Kam Pek
  • Mocha Royal
  • Mocha Sintra
  • Mocha广发
  • Mocha Inner Harbour

A Mocha Club also operates inside Altira Macau with 82 machines8. The full guide is at Mocha Clubs.

Junkets and VIP rooms

The high-roller side of Macau runs through junket operators: licensed intermediaries who bring VIP players to the city, extend them credit and settle their accounts, usually in dedicated VIP rooms inside the casinos. The Venetian's floor, for example, is split between exclusive VIP rooms and the mass-market area9.

The junket business has shrunk dramatically from its peak, but the VIP rooms remain part of the layout of every major resort, and the tables inside them carry far higher minimums than the main floor. The full story, including how the system works and what changed, is in junkets and VIP rooms in Macau.
