Sands Macao: the first Las Vegas-style casino in Macau

When Sands Macao opened in 2004, it changed what a Macau casino looked like. Until then, the city's casinos were largely local in style, run under the old monopoly system. Sands Macao, operated by Venetian (Macau) Limited, brought the Las Vegas model to the peninsula5:

  • a big, bright, open gaming floor
  • international table games alongside the Chinese favorites
  • an all-suite hotel attached

Within a couple of years it was being billed in the gaming press as the biggest casino in the world5.

Today Sands Macao is one of several properties owned by Sands China Ltd., which is Macao's leading developer of integrated resorts6. Its sister properties, including The Venetian Macao, The Parisian Macao and The Londoner Macao, sit across the water on the Cotai Strip, but Sands Macao remains the company's flagship on the peninsula itself6. For a fuller picture of the city's casino landscape, see our guide to casinos in Macau.

The property is smaller and more focused than the Cotai mega-resorts. There is no arena or canal-side shopping mall here. What you get is a concentrated gaming operation, a hotel of 289 suites, and restaurants, a spa and entertainment areas1. That makes it a popular stop for people staying on the peninsula who want the Las Vegas-style floor without the trip to Cotai.

The casino floor: tables, slots and gaming areas

The gaming floor covers approximately 212,000 square feet1. It is divided into separate gaming areas for mass market customers, VIP customers and premium customers, so the layout moves from the busy public floor into progressively quieter, higher-stakes rooms7.

The casino floor: tables, slots and gaming areas

The most recent official figures, from the end of 2022, put the property at 159 gaming tables and 563 slot machines or similar electronic gaming facilities, within roughly 176,000 square feet of gaming and back-of-house area8. Earlier filings counted more: 210 tables and 634 machines in 2016, and 200 tables with 761 machines at the end of 20178. The trend across Macau has been toward fewer but more productive tables, so do not be surprised if the floor feels tighter than the numbers from a decade ago.

Like every casino in Macau, the doors never close: casinos in the city are open 24 hours3. If you are playing on the mass floor, the gaming floor provides free bottled water, tea and coffee for active players2.

Table games and minimum bets

The games on the floor reflect what the local market actually plays. The current focus is on the "Big 6"2:

Baccarat dominates, as it does across Macau as a whole, but the mix gives you a genuine choice between Western games and the Chinese classics. If fan tan is new to you, our page on fan tan, pai gow and traditional Chinese games explains how it works.

Table minimums at Sands Macao generally run from HKD 300 to HKD 1,0002. It is worth knowing how that fits the wider picture on the peninsula. A few years ago, HK$100, HK$200 and HK$300 tables were common across Macau's mass floors; those days are gone. HK$300 traditional live tables are now unlikely to be found in any of the big casinos on the peninsula, and even HK$500 tables are available on only a handful of tables, generally at off-peak hours9. Mass floor minimums across the peninsula now commonly sit in the HK$1,000 to HK$5,000 range even at non-peak times9.

So if you walk in expecting the low-roller tables of old Macau, adjust your expectations: bring a bankroll that matches a HK$500 to HK$1,000 minimum if you want a seat at the main games. One small rule worth knowing: at games such as craps, bet amounts must be multiples of the table minimum, so you cannot chip in an odd amount below that line.

VIP salons and premium gaming

Sands Macao provides VIP gaming salons for high rollers, offering an exclusive gaming experience with high-limit tables and personalized service2. These are the quieter rooms off the main floor, where minimums are far above the mass floor and a host takes care of your needs.

If you are wondering what "high roller" means in practice in Macau, the traditional expectation in VIP rooms was a gaming budget of over MOP500,000 per visit, though casinos sometimes relaxed that threshold during periods of intense competition10. You do not need anything like that figure to enjoy the main floor, but the VIP salons operate in a different world. For background on how this side of the market works, see our page on junkets and VIP rooms in Macau.

The premium mass areas sit between the two: higher limits than the public floor, but without the credit and host arrangements of the classic VIP rooms. This middle segment has become the most important part of Macau's market, and Sands Macao's separate premium gaming area is part of that shift7.

Hotel suites, dining and other facilities

Sands Macao is an all-suite hotel with 289 guest rooms, decorated and furnished with modern, luxurious amenities1. That is a small hotel by Cotai standards, where sister properties run to thousands of rooms, but it means the property keeps a compact, hotel-first feel that suits the peninsula.

Beyond the gaming floor, the property includes restaurants, a spa, entertainment areas and other amenities1. Do not expect the retail malls and theaters of the Cotai Strip resorts; the dining here is practical rather than a destination in itself, and the spa and entertainment areas round out a short stay rather than filling a week.

Sands Rewards loyalty program

Sands Rewards is the loyalty program across the Sands properties in Macau, and it is free to join. You earn points by using your membership card at the tables or slots, and those points can be used for dining discounts or free hotel stays across all Sands properties in Macau2. So points you earn at Sands Macao can be spent at, say, The Venetian Macao, which is handy if your trip takes you to both sides of the city.

Sands Rewards loyalty program

The program family also includes Sands Lifestyle and Sands Alipay Digital, which are covered by the same privacy and membership terms when you enroll12. Membership is open only to those of age: Sands does not allow anyone under 21 to gamble in its hotels or to remain in casino areas12.

On the payments side, Sands China has also worked to make cross-border mobile payment easier for visitors. In 2023 it announced a cooperation with Kakao Pay and Macau Pass to give South Korean travelers easy mobile payment on arrival13, part of a broader push to smooth the experience for international guests.

Who can enter: age and ID rules

Entry to Sands Macao's casino is strictly for guests aged 21 and older, and a valid original passport or ID is required for all casino visitors2. This is not a house rule but the law across Macau: the legal age of entry to any casino in the city is 21, and persons under 21 are not allowed to enter3. The rule applies equally to visitors; the government has been clear that the 21-year minimum will not be lowered for tourists, because non-residents deserve the same protection3.

Staff supervising casino entry can ask anyone for proof of age, and they can refuse entry to anyone who declines to show it, so carry your original document rather than a photocopy or photo on your phone. For a fuller explanation of the rules that apply across the city, including the restrictions that bar certain other groups from casinos, see our page on casino entry rules in Macau.
