Thailand's national police said a World Cup betting operation running from 6 to 14 June 2026 produced 596 cases and 629 suspects nationwide, along with the blocking of 128 gambling websites and URLs1. The force's information office published the figures on 15 June 2026, describing the work of its center for suppressing illegal betting on the 2026 World Cup, which it said opened officially on 11 June 20261.
The cases break down into 64 cases against people organizing World Cup betting, with 80 suspects, and 278 cases against people betting on World Cup matches, with 279 suspects. A further 254 cases involved other types of online gambling, with 270 suspects1. Investigators said they had traced more than 2,150 million baht in circulation through betting networks and were following financial trails toward organizers, financiers, mule accounts and beneficiaries1.
The operation follows a stated "3 cut" approach: cut websites, cut finance, cut the online gambling network1. Police Lieutenant General Trirong Phiwpan, a deputy police inspector-general and deputy police spokesman, said the target was not small-scale players.
In May 2026 alone it blocked 78,796 links2. Police penalties for players were set out on 11 June 2026: under Section 12(2) of the Gambling Act 1935, a player faces up to two years in prison, a fine of up to 2,000 baht, or both, while organizers may also face money laundering charges3.

What it means for players
Gambling in Thailand is restricted to a small number of licensed activities, and betting on football with an unlicensed operator is a criminal offense for the person placing the bet, not only for the operator3. The police statement of 11 June 2026 said players are liable under Section 12(2) of the Gambling Act 1935, with a maximum penalty of two years in prison, a 2,000 baht fine, or both3. Registering with a betting site also carries data risks, the same statement said, including misuse of personal information and difficulty withdrawing funds3. Police asked the public not to open mule accounts, accept transfers on others' behalf, or invite others to gamble1. Site blocking is the main visible enforcement tool: the digital ministry has blocked hundreds of thousands of URLs, and police said they would keep proposing blocks throughout the tournament3.
What happens next
The police said they would continue tracking financial routes to reach organizers, financial backers, mule accounts and beneficiaries, and would keep suppressing gambling throughout the competition1. The public can report leads to the 191 or 1599 hotlines at any time1. The digital ministry was ordered to increase web monitoring during the tournament, and the Technology Crime Suppression Center under the Royal Thai Police was to deploy artificial intelligence detection systems to track illegal betting platforms2.
