Dividends are rounded to the nearest 10 cents
If you bet on football with the Hong Kong Jockey Club, the number you see in your account is not the raw result of the multiplication. The Club takes the calculated dividend and rounds it to the nearest 10 cents, up or down1. That applies to every winning fixed odds football bet, whatever the market.
The arithmetic behind it is simple. Your stake is multiplied by the fixed odds that were displayed when you placed the bet6. Most stakes and odds do not multiply out neatly onto a 10 cent mark, so the result is adjusted to the nearest one. The direction depends only on which 10 cent mark is closer.
Two things are worth knowing about how the Club treats the odds themselves. First, the fixed odds recorded in the operator's official record for each football bet are the odds used to calculate your payout, not whatever you might remember seeing6. Second, the Club can change the fixed odds for a particular bet type at any time before you place the bet7. Once your bet is placed, the recorded price is what counts.
The rounding is genuinely to the nearest 10 cents, not always down and not always up. There is no house-favored direction built into the rule. Over a single bet the difference is at most five cents either way, which is small. Over a long run of bets it is noise rather than a cost, unlike the margin built into the odds themselves, which is covered in vig or juice explained.
Which bets the rounding rule covers: Fixed Odds Football Bets and Early Settlement
The 10 cent rule is written to cover two things in the same sentence: the dividend on each winning football bet, and any Early Settlement payment1. If you have never used Early Settlement, the short version is that it lets you surrender a football bet before the event finishes, in exchange for a payment from the operator.

Early Settlement is not a right. The operator decides at its own discretion whether to allow Early Settlement proposals at all, sets the conditions, the timing and which types of football bet are eligible, and may refuse a proposal without giving a reason7. If your proposal is accepted, the bet is immediately surrendered7. From that moment it is settled, and the payment you receive is rounded to the nearest 10 cents like any other football dividend1.
Because the same rounding rule governs both, there is no separate small print to learn for Early Settlement. Whatever figure the settlement calculation produces, it lands on a 10 cent mark.
A few related points that affect what actually reaches your account:
- The Club may set maximum or minimum unit bet amounts, total bet amounts and a maximum payout per ticket, per bet, per bet type and per betting day, and may change those limits without notice5.
- If a dividend, refund or Early Settlement is paid in error, the Club reserves the right to correct the amount with you or by debiting or crediting the relevant betting accounts7.
- Once the Club has started paying dividends on winning Tournament Bets, any later amendment to the tournament records by the official body is ignored for dividend purposes8.
- Where a football bet is refunded under the rules, for combination bets the odds of all possible outcomes of those bets are treated as 19.
That last point matters for anyone building combination bets. A refunded leg does not wipe out the bet. It is treated as odds of 1, so the rest of the combination stands and the payout is recalculated accordingly9.
Rounding up or down: how the nearest 10 cents works
The phrase "rounded up or rounded down to the nearest 10 cents" appears across the Club's football materials, including its in-play betting pages and its market-specific guides for Home/Away/Draw, handicap and Handicap Home Draw Away10. The wording is consistent because the rule is one rule applied to every fixed odds football market.
In practice, "nearest" means exactly what it says. If the raw payout is closer to the lower 10 cent mark, the figure drops to it. If it is closer to the higher one, the figure rises to that one. A figure that already sits on a 10 cent mark is left alone. The rule itself is what the Club states: the dividend on each winning football bet is rounded up or down to the nearest 10 cents1.
For in-play betting there is an extra layer worth understanding, because it changes the stake before rounding ever applies. On a split line such as a goal line of [3/3.5], your stake is divided between the two halves of the line. A HKD 1,000 bet on over at odds of 1.90 puts HKD 500 on3 and HKD 500 on [3.5]. If the match produces four goals or more, both halves win and you collect HKD 1,900. If it produces exactly three goals, the3 half is refunded and the [3.5] half loses, so you get HKD 500 back14. The minimum bet on in-play handicap is HKD 200, and that figure includes the stake14.
If you want the wider picture of how prices are built before rounding ever comes into it, how bookmakers set odds walks through opening lines and margin, and stake, profit and return explains which odds figures include your stake.
Racing and Mark Six: what the HKJC pays out on
Racing does not use the 10 cent rule. The rounding depends on the bet type, and the two tiers are worth memorizing if you bet on horses regularly.
For Win, Composite Win, Place, Quinella, Quinella Place and Double bets, the dividend on each unit bet is declared in multiples of 50 cents, rounded up or down to the nearest 50 cents2. For all other bet types, dividends per unit are declared in multiples of one dollar, rounded to the nearest dollar3.
There is a further wrinkle for commingled Win and Place pools. Those dividends are declared in multiples of one dollar, rounded down to the nearest dollar, with the remainder going to the dividend rounding account15. Note the difference: this one rounds down only, rather than to the nearest dollar. The declared dividend per unit for commingled Win bets is also never less than the betting unit plus one dollar15.
Place betting has its own structure that affects how many dividends are paid out at all. With four, five, six or seven declared runners there are two place dividends. With eight or more declared runners there are three place dividends, unless a foreign operator announces otherwise15.
A few more racing payout mechanics that sit alongside the rounding:
- Dividends are declared per betting unit and paid on multiples. If only fractional or partial unit winning tickets exist, the dividend is declared on the lowest partial unit and paid on multiples of it15.
- If two or more horses dead heat for first, the Win net pool is divided equally among the winning combinations backed15.
- Flexi Bet lets you play a unit stake as low as HKD 1, which is how partial unit tickets arise in the first place16.
The Club's license restricts it to three products17.
| Product | What the Club offers |
|---|---|
| Horse racing | pari-mutuel pools and fixed odds bet types18 |
| Mark Six lottery | a digital guide covering features such as checking the drawn numbers of the past 20 draws19 |
| Football | pari-mutuel and fixed odds betting on selected overseas matches18 |
For pari-mutuel football, the dividend is the amount the operator declares to be paid on a valid football bet for the winning selection, applied to each type of pari-mutuel football bet20. That is a different animal from fixed odds, where the price is locked when you bet. If you want the mechanics of pool betting in more detail, how pari-mutuel dividends are calculated covers pools, deductions and rounding, and reading a tote odds board explains how Win odds and Place odds ranges are displayed before a race.
Practical details: currency, payment and limits
Every football bet with the Club must be made and settled in Hong Kong currency5. That is not a display setting. It is a condition of the bet, so your stake goes down in HKD and your rounded dividend comes back in HKD21.

Payment works through a short list of channels. Football bets can be paid for by cash, cash coupons and/or a betting account, unless the Club announces otherwise for a particular bet5. The Club provides cash betting and account-based betting only, and does not allow credit facilities or credit card betting22.
Age matters, and it is enforced at the payout stage as well as the sale stage. The Club will not sell betting tickets or pay a dividend on winning tickets for those who are underage22. So even a winning ticket will not be paid out to someone below the age threshold.
If you are working out what a bet will actually return before you place it, remember the order of operations:
- Stake multiplied by the fixed odds recorded for your bet6.
- Any applicable refunds or surrendered legs applied, with refunded combination legs treated at odds of 19.
- The result rounded up or down to the nearest 10 cents1.
- Any maximum payout limit applied, which the Club may set per ticket, per bet, per bet type or per betting day5.
Step four is the one people forget. A maximum payout cap can bite before rounding is even visible, particularly on large combination bets.
What to expect on the day
For a straightforward fixed odds football bet, nothing about the rounding is visible until settlement. You place the bet at the recorded odds, the match finishes, and the dividend appears in your account already rounded to the nearest 10 cents1. There is no separate rounding line and no adjustment to chase.
For racing, the dividend is declared per unit bet in the applicable multiple, so the figure you see on the results board is already the rounded figure2. If you hold a partial unit ticket from a Flexi Bet, your payment is a multiple of the declared dividend based on the lowest partial unit15.
For Early Settlement, the payment arrives when the Club accepts your proposal, and the bet is surrendered at that moment7. The amount is rounded to the nearest 10 cents like any other football dividend1. If the Club later finds an error in a dividend, refund or Early Settlement payment, it can correct the amount by debiting or crediting your betting account7.
One last thing that catches people out on tournament markets. Once the Club has begun paying dividends on winning Tournament Bets, any subsequent amendment by the official body to the tournament records is ignored for dividend purposes8. The same principle applies to match results: once payouts and refunds have been made based on the referee's announcement, a later revision by the referee or official body will not be accepted, even if it would have changed who was eligible9.
Common Questions
Do fixed odds football payouts get rounded up or down?
Both. The Hong Kong Jockey Club rounds the dividend on each winning fixed odds football bet to the nearest 10 cents, up or down. The direction depends on which 10 cent mark is closer to the calculated figure. There is no house-favored direction built into the rule.
What is the smallest unit a Hong Kong football bet pays in?
For fixed odds football bets, the payout is calculated to the nearest 10 cents. That is the smallest unit a winning dividend is declared in. The minimum bet itself is a separate matter: in-play handicap betting has a minimum stake of HKD 200, and Flexi Bet unit stakes start at HKD 1.
Does the rounding rule apply to Early Settlement payments?
Yes. The same rule covers both the dividend on each winning football bet and any Early Settlement payment. Both are rounded up or down to the nearest 10 cents. Early Settlement is money paid to surrender a bet before the event ends, and the operator accepts or rejects each proposal at its own discretion.
What currency are HKJC football bets paid in?
Hong Kong dollars. All football bets must be made and settled in Hong Kong currency. You cannot place or settle a Hong Kong Jockey Club football bet in another currency, so any payout you receive is in HKD regardless of where the match is played.
What bet types does the Hong Kong Jockey Club offer?
Three products only: horse racing, the Mark Six lottery and football. Racing offers pari-mutuel pools and fixed odds bet types. Football offers both pari-mutuel and fixed odds betting on selected overseas matches. The Club's license restricts it to these three, and it takes cash and account bets only.
Does the Jockey Club offer pari-mutuel football betting?
Yes. Alongside fixed odds football, the Club operates pari-mutuel football betting on selected overseas matches. In pari-mutuel betting the dividend is the amount the operator declares to be paid on a valid winning bet for the winning selection, rather than a price fixed at the time you placed it.
