What in-play betting is
In-play betting, also called live betting, means placing a bet after a match has already kicked off. Instead of picking your outcome before the first whistle, you watch the game unfold and bet on what happens next. The odds are not fixed in advance. They shift with every attack, every goal and every red card.
At the Hong Kong Jockey Club, in-play betting covers a wide range of markets. You can bet on the in-play home, away or draw result, the first half result, handicap lines, total goals, correct score, total corners, next goalscorer and more6. Each of these markets is available only during designated in-play matches, so not every game on the schedule will have live options.
Singapore Pools offers live betting on football events where it chooses to make it available. Bets can be placed while the event is in progress, and the operator decides which matches qualify4. You can place live bets through your Singapore Pools account online or at a Livewire venue2.
The key difference from pre-match betting is timing. When you bet before kickoff, you know the odds and the stake. When you bet in-play, you are betting into a moving market. The score at the moment you place your bet is not necessarily the score that determines your payout. For most in-play markets, settlement is based on the full-time result at the end of regulation time, not the score when you placed the bet1.
How live odds move during a match
Live odds change because the probability of each outcome changes as the match develops. If the home team scores, the odds on them winning drop. If the away team gets a player sent off, the odds shift again. The operator recalculates continuously.

For in-play handicap betting, both the handicap line and the odds move together. The line might start at one handicap and shift to a bigger one if the favorite takes an early lead3. The payout is based on the full-time result adjusted by the handicap line at the time you placed your bet, not the score at that moment3. This is an important distinction. If you bet on a team at a bigger handicap when they are already winning 1-0, you need them to win by more goals for the bet to pay out.
Here is a worked example from the HKJC rules. Barcelona are leading Real Madrid 1-0 after 30 minutes. The live handicap line is Barcelona [-1/-1.5] versus Real Madrid [+1/+1.5]. You bet HKD 200 on Barcelona at odds of 2.003.
- If the match ends 1-1, you lose your HKD 200
- If Barcelona win 1-0, you lose half your stake and half is refunded, so you get HKD 100 back
- If Barcelona win 2-0, you win HKD 400 including your stake
The line moved because Barcelona were already ahead. You are not betting on the current score. You are betting on what the final score will be after the handicap is applied.
Correct score odds also shift with the state of play. West Ham to win 2-0 might be priced at 8.50 before kickoff. If West Ham take a 1-0 lead, the same 2-0 correct score bet might move to 9.007. The odds went up because the 2-0 outcome is now less likely than it was before the goal, since West Ham need one more goal rather than two.
Bet delays and suspended markets: why they exist
When something significant happens in a match, the live market often locks for a few seconds. This is not a technical glitch. It is a deliberate pause.
The operator needs time to verify what happened and recalculate the odds. If a goal is scored, the odds on every related market change instantly. If a penalty is awarded, the same applies. If a player is sent off, the entire complexion of the match shifts. During that window, accepting bets at the old odds would expose the operator to a guaranteed loss.
This is why you might see a market suspended, greyed out or showing a countdown. The pause usually lasts only a few seconds. Once the operator has confirmed the event and updated the prices, the market reopens.
There is also a rule about delayed coverage. If you are watching a live stream that is behind the actual match, you might see a goal before the operator has updated the odds. Placing a bet in that window is treated as void. Singapore Pools rules state that a live bet placed after the outcome is known, or placed with an advantage from delayed or lagged television coverage, may be treated as void4.
The Hong Kong Jockey Club has a similar rule. The operator may declare a betting ticket void if it considers that the bettor knew an event or result, or that a team gained a significant advantage such as a goal, a penalty, an opponent red card or opponent injuries, before the bet was placed8. This applies whether the bet would have won or lost.
Where in-play betting is offered in Asia
In-play betting is not available everywhere in Asia. It depends on whether the jurisdiction has a licensed operator that offers live markets.
Hong Kong: The Hong Kong Jockey Club offers in-play betting on designated football matches. The operator may exercise its discretion to accept in-play betting on any football bet or tournament bet9. Markets include in-play handicap, in-play correct score, in-play total goals, next goalscorer and more6.
Singapore: Singapore Pools offers live betting on football events where it chooses to make it available. You can place live bets through your Singapore Pools account online or at a Livewire venue2. Live betting stops 5 minutes before the end of the event5.
Philippines: PAGCOR-licensed operators offer sports betting, and the minimum bet at some outlets is P 5.0010. The regulatory framework allows licensed sports betting, though the specific in-play offerings depend on the operator.
South Korea: The Korea Sports Promotion Foundation (KBOAT) operates legal betting on horse racing, cycling, boat racing, lotteries, sports promotion tickets and bullfighting, with casinos also legal under the state framework11. Sports Toto covers football and other sports, though in-play options are limited compared to Hong Kong and Singapore.
Macau: Sports lottery betting is regulated under the concessionaire system. Odds are fixed by the concessionaire and may vary during the acceptance period, becoming fixed at the moment the bet is accepted12. This means the odds you see when you place your bet are the odds you get.
Japan: The Japan Racing Association offers betting on horse racing, with odds changing constantly until the cutoff time for placing bets, which is 2 minutes before post time13. Football betting through WINNER is available, though in-play options are limited.
Singapore Pools live betting: markets and settlement rules
Singapore Pools offers three main ways to bet on football: Singles, Multiples and Live betting5. Live betting is available on designated events, and you can place bets while the match is in progress4.

The minimum stake depends on how you bet. At betting outlets and authorized retailers, the minimum is S$5. Through remote betting channels, the minimum is S$14. The Multiples bet type has a minimum of S$1 regardless of where you place it14. Stakes must be in multiples of S$1, except for remote bets which can be in whole dollars and cents4.
Goods and Services Tax (GST) is payable on the stake for a betting ticket4. This means the amount you pay includes the tax.
Live betting stops 5 minutes before the end of the event5. If you want to place a live bet, you need to do it before that cutoff. After that, the market closes.
Settlement for most in-play bets is based on the first half or full-time result of play time, excluding extra time and penalty shootout1. This applies to in-play home/away/draw, in-play handicap, in-play total goals, in-play correct score and other markets.
If a match is abandoned after it has proceeded beyond regulation time, there are no refunds and the full-time score determines the result14. If a match is called off before the end of regulation time, bets are void and refunded14.
Void live bets: the delayed-coverage and known-outcome rule
One of the most important rules for in-play bettors is the void bet rule. If you place a live bet after the outcome is already known, or if you have an advantage from delayed or lagged television coverage, the operator may treat the bet as void4.
This is not about cheating. It is about fairness. If your stream is 30 seconds behind the live action, you might see a goal before the operator has updated the odds. Placing a bet in that window would give you an unfair advantage. Under the rules, a live bet placed after the outcome is known, or placed with an advantage from delayed or lagged live television coverage, may be treated as void, and the operator can do so without giving any reason4.
The Hong Kong Jockey Club has a similar rule. The operator may declare a betting ticket void at any time without reason, including where a bet was placed after an event or result is known to the bettor, or after a team gained a material advantage8. This applies whether the bet is winning or losing.
The practical implication is simple. If you are watching a live stream, make sure it is as close to real-time as possible. If you see a goal before the odds have updated, do not try to place a bet. The operator will likely void it.
Minimum stakes and how you can place a bet
The minimum stake for in-play betting varies by operator and by how you place the bet.
At the Hong Kong Jockey Club, the minimum stake for an in-play handicap bet is HKD 2003. This applies to live handicap bets and other in-play markets15. The operator may also impose maximum or minimum unit stake amounts, total stake amounts and maximum payout per ticket, per bet, per bet type and per betting day, and may amend them without notice16.
At Singapore Pools, the minimum stake depends on how you place the bet.
| Bet type or channel | Minimum stake |
|---|---|
| Betting outlets and authorized retailers | S$54 |
| Remote betting channels | S$14 |
| Multiples bet type | S$114 |
Stakes must be in multiples of S$1, except for remote bets which can be in whole dollars and cents4.
To place a live bet with Singapore Pools online, you select the event you want to bet on, choose the bet type, add it to your Bet Slip by selecting the relevant odds, edit the Bet Slip if needed, then place your bets and confirm17. You can view your bet activities for more details after placing your bets17.
At the Hong Kong Jockey Club, you can place in-play bets through the operator's betting channels. The odds change constantly, so you need to check the current line before confirming your bet.
What happens to your bet if a match is abandoned or rigged
If a match is abandoned, the outcome depends on when it was called off.

If the match is called off before the end of regulation time, bets are void and refunded14. Single bets are refunded, and parlay legs involving that match are treated as successful at odds of 1.001. This means your parlay remains valid, but the abandoned match counts as a win at even odds.
If the match is abandoned after it has proceeded beyond regulation time, there are no refunds and the full-time score determines the result14. This is an important distinction. If the match reaches the end of normal time and is then abandoned, your bet stands.
If a match is declared void, all football bets on that match are declared void and refunded, except for bets whose outcome is already determined or already settled by early settlement18. Single bets are refunded, and all-up bets involving the match remain valid with the stake running onto the next selections at odds of 1.001.
If there is evidence of rigging, Singapore Pools may delay the announcement of results, withhold payment pending investigation or verification, or declare bets void and refund them4. The operator has the discretion to take any of these actions.
For tournament bets, if a team withdraws before playing any match in a single-tournament bet, all tournament bets containing that team are refunded. If a team withdraws after playing, those bets are treated as losses19. For multi-tournament bets, withdrawal from any tournament results in a refund19.
Where in-play betting is not legal
In-play betting is not legal everywhere. In some jurisdictions, all forms of gambling, including online football betting, are prohibited.
If you are looking for in-play football betting, the operators that offer it include SBOBET, which specializes in Asian Handicap sports betting and in-play live betting20.
In-play betting is widely available across Asian-facing operators. Dafa Sports lists over 18,000 markets and in-play betting, and Bet in Japan covers soccer, baseball, basketball, esports and more21. Betway offers in-play betting on sports including American Football, Baseball, Basketball, Cricket, E-Leagues, Football, Futsal, Hockey, In-Play Virtuals, Table Tennis, Tennis and Volleyball, while Dafabet's in-play markets cover Soccer, NBA, Baseball and Tennis21.
In Singapore, the Gambling Control Act 2022 sets out the framework for legal gambling. The Act does not apply to gambling within any casino or to social gambling12. This means casino gambling is regulated separately, and social gambling between friends is not covered by the Act. However, online in-play betting outside of Singapore Pools is not legal.
If you are in a jurisdiction where in-play betting is not offered by a licensed operator, your options are limited. Using an offshore operator carries legal risk, and the operator may not be regulated or safe.
Common Questions
Can I bet on a match while it is being played?
Yes, at licensed operators that offer live betting. Hong Kong's Jockey Club and Singapore Pools both accept bets during designated matches. You need an account or a betting slip, and the operator must be offering that specific match for in-play betting.
Why do live odds pause or lock for a few seconds?
Odds lock briefly when something happens that could change the result, such as a goal, a penalty or a red card. The operator needs a moment to recalculate the odds and confirm the event before accepting new bets at the old price.
What happens to a live bet if the match goes to extra time?
Most in-play bets settle on the result at the end of normal playing time, excluding extra time and penalty shootouts. If a match runs into extra time, the running score for in-play betting resets to 0:0.
What is the minimum stake for a live football bet?
At the Hong Kong Jockey Club, the minimum stake for an in-play handicap bet is HKD 200. At Singapore Pools, the minimum is S$5 at outlets and S$1 for remote betting, though the Multiples bet type has a S$1 minimum.
Do I get a refund if a match is abandoned?
It depends on when the match is abandoned. If it is called off before the end of regulation time, single bets are usually refunded. If it is abandoned after regulation time has been played, there is typically no refund and the full-time score stands.
Can players and officials of a league bet on its matches?
No. Singapore Pools rules prohibit players, officials and volunteers registered with Singapore Premier League and Singapore Cup entities from betting on those competitions or any other competition their entity participates in. Similar restrictions apply at other licensed operators.
