What in-play betting means at HKJC

In-play betting, sometimes called live betting, means placing a bet while the match is already under way rather than before kickoff. At HKJC, the odds and lines move as the game develops, so what you see on screen reflects the current state of play rather than a price set hours earlier3.

The range of in-play markets is broad. HKJC lists in-play home/away/draw, in-play first half home/away/draw, in-play handicap home/away/draw, in-play handicap, in-play first half handicap, in-play total goals over/under, in-play team total goals over/under, in-play first half total goals over/under, in-play team first half total goals over/under, in-play correct score, in-play first half correct score, in-play total corners over/under, in-play team total corners over/under, in-play first half total corners over/under, in-play team first half total corners over/under, in-play corner handicap, in-play first half corner handicap, in-play total goals, next goal, next goalscorer, in-play anytime goalscorer, in-play to qualify and in-play winner2.

One thing that catches people out: in-play bets are settled on the half-time or full-time result in normal playing time. Extra time and penalty shootouts do not count toward the settlement of these markets4. If a match goes to extra time, the in-play score during that period is reset to 0:0 for betting purposes4.

For goalscorer markets, a designated player is someone included on the HKJC betting list. Players who are on the pitch but not on that list are treated differently, which matters if you back a lesser-known name2.

The operator's discretion to accept in-play bets

This is the single most important thing to understand about HKJC in-play betting: it is not a right, it is an option the operator holds. HKJC may exercise its discretion to accept in-play betting on any football bet or tournament bet1. In practice that means the availability of live markets can vary from match to match, and there is no rule that says every fixture must have them.

The operator's discretion to accept in-play bets

The same discretion applies to limits. HKJC may set maximum or minimum unit bet amounts, total bet amounts and maximum payout per ticket, per bet, per bet type and per betting day, and it may amend them without notice1. Under the football betting rules, the operator may impose a maximum or minimum unit stake amount or total stake amount, a maximum dividend amount payable, a maximum total stake per betting day and a maximum dividend per betting day, changeable at its sole and absolute discretion without prior notice1.

There is also a human layer to this. The supervisor of a betting location may, without giving any reason, refuse money for a bet, cancel acceptance of a bet, or order any person to leave the betting location5. So even at a physical venue, acceptance is not automatic.

If you want to place in-play bets, you need a funded betting account or cash at a venue. A bet made through an account cannot be a valid bet unless the account holds a balance sufficient to cover the bet at the time the bet is made6. Existing account holders can apply for online betting services through the registration link and follow its instructions7.

Bet types: fixed odds and pari-mutuel football bets

HKJC operates pari-mutuel and fixed odds betting on selected overseas football matches8. The two work differently, and it helps to know which one you are looking at before you stake.

With fixed odds, the price is set when you place the bet. Winnings for each winning fixed-odds football bet are calculated to the nearest HKD 0.10, up or down9. That rounding rule applies across fixed-odds football markets, including correct score9.

With pari-mutuel betting, your stake goes into a pool with everyone else's, and the dividend is declared by the operator after the pool is settled. The dividend is the amount declared by the operator to be paid on a valid football bet in respect of the winning selection, as applied to each type of pari-mutuel football bet10. The operator may decide from time to time which types of pari-mutuel football bets to offer on a nominated match or matches11.

Payment for football bets can be made by cash, cash voucher and/or betting account, unless the operator announces otherwise5. All football bets must be made and settled in Hong Kong currency1.

Where the rules are set: Chapter 2 of the football betting rules

The detailed terms for HKJC football betting sit in the Football Betting Rules, published in chapters on the HKJC website. Chapter 2 is the general rules chapter, and it is where you find the basics that apply to every football bet: currency, payment methods, stake limits and void match treatment1.

Chapter 2 states that all football bets must be made and settled in Hong Kong currency1. It sets out the payment methods: cash, cash voucher and/or betting account1. It gives the operator the discretion to accept in-play betting on any football bet or tournament bet1. And it contains the void match rules that determine what happens to your money if a fixture is canceled or annulled1.

The in-play betting page on the HKJC site is a summary. It states plainly that the content is for reference only and that detailed terms are in the Football Betting Rules2. So if you are checking something specific, such as how a particular market settles or what happens in an unusual situation, the rules chapter is the document that governs, not the summary page.

The rules are versioned and updated. HKJC published a 17 January 2026 version of Chapter 2, and a 30 March 2026 English version5. If you are reading a rule to settle a dispute, check the version date against the date of your bet.

When a match bet is declared void

A void match is one that is declared invalid for betting purposes. The treatment is consistent across HKJC football markets, and it is worth knowing before you stake, because it affects parlays differently from singles.

When a match bet is declared void

For single bets, the rule is simple: if a match is declared void, single bets on it are refunded3. For parlays, the leg stays alive. Parlay bets involving the void match remain valid and are settled as successful legs at odds of 1.003. The same treatment appears across HKJC football documentation: single bets refunded, all-up bets counted as one successful leg12.

Under the football betting rules, all football bets on a void match will stand and the odds for all possible outcomes on the void match shall be considered as "1", subject to listed exceptions1. The exceptions matter. Bets whose outcome is already determined, bets already settled by early settlement, or cases where the operator decides otherwise, may not be refunded1.

There is also a knowledge rule. The operator may declare a ticket void if it considers the bettor knew an event or result, or that a team gained a significant advantage such as a goal, a penalty, an opponent red card or opponent injuries, before the bet was placed or became valid, whether or not the bet won5. The operator's decision on this is final and binding5.

If a bet type, selection or pool is terminated, all valid bets in it are refunded in full, and the operator has no further liability beyond the full refund5. And winnings or refunds not claimed within 60 days are forfeited5.

Worked examples with real HKJC figures

The clearest way to see how in-play settlement works is to walk through the examples HKJC publishes.

In-play handicap. Take Barcelona [-1/-1.5] versus Real Madrid [+1/+1.5] at odds of 2.00. You bet HKD 200 on Barcelona [-1/-1.5] and Barcelona wins 1:0. Half your stake loses and half is refunded, so you get HKD 100 back2. The line splits your stake across two handicaps, which is why the result is a partial refund rather than a full win or loss.

In-play total goals. With an in-play goal line of [3/3.5], you bet HKD 1,000 on over at odds of 1.90. If total goals are 4 or more, you receive HKD 1,900. If total goals are exactly 3, you receive HKD 500, which is your stake returned. Half the stake sits on1 and half on [3.5]2.

In-play anytime goalscorer. You bet HKD 100 each on Messi and Suarez to score anytime at odds of 3.50. When Messi scores first and Suarez scores second, each bet pays HKD 3502. All designated players who score win anytime goalscorer bets, and if the same designated player scores more than one goal, winning bets are paid only once2.

Next goalscorer. You bet HKD 100 on Messi as next goalscorer [1st goal] at odds of 2.10. If Messi scores first, you receive HKD 210. If the only goal is scored by a non-designated player, the bet is refunded at odds of 5.60. If the only goal is an own goal, a bet on Iniesta is settled as lost. If the first goal is an own goal and Iniesta scores the second, the bet pays HKD 5602.

In-play corners. If the in-play corner line is 8.5, over means 9 corners or more and under means 8 corners or fewer2.

These examples show why reading the settlement basis matters. In-play handicap payouts are based on the full-time result in normal playing time adjusted by the handicap, not the score at the moment you placed the bet14. The handicap line and odds change as the match develops, so the line you take is the line that applies to your bet3.

Tournament bets and in-play

In-play betting is not limited to single matches. HKJC may accept in-play betting on tournament bets as well as match bets, again at its discretion1.

Tournament bets and in-play

Tournament bets cover designated items or outcomes within a competition. The operator may offer bets on outright winner, group winner, group 1st and 2nd, final pairing, number of titles for a team, winning continent, winning country, promotion, relegation, to qualify and last place15.

Tournament bets have their own withdrawal rule. For bets involving one tournament only, if a team is withdrawn after taking part in any of the tournament matches, all tournament bets involving that team will be treated as losing16. That is different from the void match treatment for single matches, so if you are combining tournament and match bets, check which rule applies to each leg.

Practical points before you bet

A few things that apply to every HKJC football bet, in-play or not:

  • Currency. All football bets must be made and settled in Hong Kong dollars1.
  • Payment. Cash, cash voucher and/or betting account, unless the operator announces otherwise5.
  • Account balance. A bet through your account is only valid if the balance covers it at the time you place it6.
  • No withdrawals. Bettors may not withdraw any valid football bet5.
  • Tickets. Physical betting tickets must not be folded5.
  • Result source. The referee's official score announced immediately after the match is the final result for full-time bets, the referee's half-time result applies to half-time bets, and the referee's extra-time score applies to extra-time bets5.
  • Early kickoff. If a match is played earlier than scheduled, all football bets accepted by the operator before the match started remain valid5.
  • Claim window. Winnings or refunds not claimed within 60 days are forfeited5.

If you are new to the mechanics of live markets, the general guides on in-play betting and how sports bets are settled cover the concepts that apply across operators. Common Questions

Does HKJC accept in-play bets on every football match?

No. HKJC decides match by match whether to accept in-play betting, and it can decline any bet at its discretion. When in-play markets are open you will see them listed alongside the pre-match markets for that fixture. If a match has no in-play options, only pre-match betting is available.

What is the difference between fixed odds and pari-mutuel football bets?

With fixed odds, the price is locked in when you place the bet, so you know your return in advance. With pari-mutuel betting, all stakes go into a pool and the dividend is declared after the pool closes, so the final payout depends on how much was bet in total.

Where can I read the current HKJC football betting rules?

The full Football Betting Rules are published on the HKJC website, split into chapters. Chapter 2 covers general rules such as currency, payment methods and void matches. The in-play betting page on the HKJC site is a summary only and points you to the rules for the detailed terms.

What happens to my bet if a match is declared void?

Single bets on a void match are refunded. Parlay bets that include the void match stay valid, and that leg is treated as a successful selection at odds of 1.00. If your bet was already settled early, or the outcome was already determined, the refund may not apply.

Can I place in-play bets on tournament bets as well as single matches?

HKJC can accept in-play betting on tournament bets as well as on individual matches, but only at its discretion. Tournament markets cover things like outright winner, group winner and to qualify. Availability depends on what the operator chooses to offer for that competition.

Who decides whether in-play betting is available on a given match?

HKJC decides. The operator may exercise its discretion to accept in-play betting on any football bet or tournament bet. It can also set maximum and minimum stake amounts and maximum payouts, and change them without notice, so limits can differ from match to match.
