What toto is: Japan's soccer prediction lottery

toto is Japan's national soccer pools. Each round, the operator designates a set of matches, mostly from the J.League but also including international and overseas fixtures when the calendar allows, and you predict the result of each one over 90 minutes1. It works like the classic football pools familiar from Britain and elsewhere: the more matches you get right, the bigger your prize tier.

The core game gives you 13 designated matches. For each one you mark the home team's win as "1", the home team's loss as "2", and anything else, meaning a draw or a result decided in extra time, as "0"2. If matches are canceled, the round still counts as long as at least 9 of the 13 go ahead, with up to 4 allowed to fall through1.

The whole family of games sits under Japan's sports promotion lottery, run to fund sport in the country, and toto is the flagship product. Alongside the prediction games there are random-selection games like BIG, and basketball lotteries, covered below. The prediction games are the ones most people mean when they say "toto"5.

The games: toto, mini toto, totoGOAL3 and totoGOAL2

There are four soccer games, all at JPY 100 per bet3.

The games: toto, mini toto, totoGOAL3 and totoGOAL2

toto, mini toto and totoGOAL3 are regular products sold all year. totoGOAL2 appears only for special occasions, such as the J.League league cup (the Levain Cup) and the Emperor's Cup semifinals3.

mini toto is the easy entry point: you simply pick five matches, and the minimum for a valid round is 3 matches going ahead1. totoGOAL3 changes the task from results to goals: for each of the 6 teams across 3 matches, you predict whether they score 0, 1, 2 or 3 or more goals in 90 minutes1. Its minimum is 2 matches established, with up to 1 cancellation allowed1.

Prizes and odds: from JPY 10,000 to JPY 500,000,000

Half of all sales goes into the prize pool, and the split depends on the game2.

  • toto: 1st prize 70%, 2nd 15%, 3rd 15% of the pool. 1st means all matches correct, 2nd means one wrong, 3rd means two wrong2.
  • mini toto: 1st prize takes 100% of the pool, for all five matches correct1.
  • totoGOAL3: 1st prize 60%, 2nd 40%, with 2nd allowing one team wrong1.

The odds are theoretical values that assume random picking. For toto, the 1st prize is about 1 in 1,600,000, 2nd about 1 in 60,000, and 3rd about 1 in 5,0003. mini toto's 1st prize is 1 in 243, which is why its typical payout is only about JPY 10,0003. totoGOAL3 runs at 1 in 4,096 for 1st and about 1 in 228 for 2nd3.

Prize amounts are not fixed. They vary with sales and the number of winning entries in each tier2. The caps are what make headlines: toto's 1st prize is normally capped at JPY 100,000,000, but when a carryover occurs the cap rises to JPY 500,000,0005.

The carryover works like this. If nobody wins the 1st prize, or winners take only part of it, the remainder rolls into the next round's 1st prize pool. The pool for each round equals the previous round's carryover plus 35% of that round's total toto sales4. A worked example from the operator: if the 1st prize pool reaches JPY 1,500,000,000, up to three winners could each take JPY 500,000,0004.

How a bet works: marksheets, singles and multis

In a shop, you fill in a marksheet with your predictions, hand it to the staff, and receive your toto ticket. That is the whole purchase process6.

There are two basic bet types:

  • Single: JPY 100 covers all matches in one pattern. It is the simple way in, and the operator describes it as easy and casual for beginners7.
  • Multi: for any one match you can mark a double (2 outcomes) or a triple (all 3 outcomes), which multiplies your combinations and your cost6.

A popular middle path is to predict only the two or three matches you feel confident about, or the ones involving your favorite team, and let the computer fill in the rest8. The regular purchase scheme (Rakuraku Purchase) does exactly this: for toto, mini toto group A, mini toto group B and totoGOAL3, the computer makes the predictions9. On the PC purchase screen you also get team head-to-head data, real-time voting status, a random selection button, and a calculator that estimates your potential winnings10.

Where to buy: shops, convenience stores and online

You have three main channels.

Lottery shops. Look for the sports toto logo at dedicated lottery stands and some regular lottery shops. Shop hours run roughly 8:00 to 23:00, varying by store, and sales close at 12:00 noon on the final sales day of each round6.

Convenience stores. toto is sold at four chains, each through its terminal machine, and each cuts off sales at 11:30 AM on the final day11:

ChainTerminalHours
LawsonLoppi, at Loppi-equipped stores onlyStore hours12
FamilyMartMulti Copy machine stores only8:00 to 22:3013
MinistopLoppi, at Loppi-equipped stores onlyStore hours14
7-ElevenMulti Copy Machine storesStore hours15

At FamilyMart, for example, you touch "sports lottery" on the Multi Copy machine, choose the toto purchase option, receive an application slip, and pay at the register13. The same basic flow applies at the other chains.

Online. The official sports lottery site sells 24 hours a day, and partner sites also carry the games: Yahoo! toto, au PAY toto, SMBC toto and Rakuten toto, among others16. Buying on the official site, whether you pay online or at a convenience store, requires joining Club toto, the free membership scheme18. For more on accounts, payment methods and how online buying works in practice, see buying toto and BIG online.

One thing you cannot do is reserve a ticket on the website and collect it in a shop; store tickets are bought in the store7. Online sales close at 19:00 on the final sales day for rounds featuring non-J.League matches16.

BIG and MEGA BIG: the no-prediction soccer lottery

BIG is the same idea as toto without the work. The computer randomly selects the results for you, so no prediction is needed, and you can join as casually as buying a regular lottery ticket19. It comes in several sizes20:

GamePriceTop 1st prize
BIG (100-yen)JPY 100JPY 100,000,00020
BIG (11-match)JPY 200About JPY 10,000,00020
BIG (12-match)JPY 200JPY 700,000,00020
BIG (14-match)JPY 200JPY 300,000,000, or JPY 600,000,000 with carryover21
BIG1000JPY 1,000JPY 10,000,0005

The 14-match BIG pays 50% of sales as prizes, split 1st 60%, 2nd 15%, 3rd 15%, 4th 10%21. A real draw shows how the money spreads: in draw 1633, the 2nd prize paid JPY 2,066,400 to 13 tickets, 3rd paid JPY 39,360 to 195 tickets, 5th paid JPY 1,380, and 6th paid JPY 54022.

MEGA BIG holds the record for the largest prize in Japanese lottery history, excluding the public racing sports23. For the full picture of the BIG family, including MEGA BIG and how the random selection works, see BIG and MEGA BIG.

DUNK and WINNER: basketball lotteries

The same operator runs two basketball products.

DUNK and WINNER: basketball lotteries

DUNK is the basketball equivalent of BIG: the computer picks, you do not predict. The main 10-game version pays 50% of sales as prizes, split 1st 75%, 2nd 10%, 3rd 4%, 4th 4%, 5th 7%25. The 1st prize normally tops out at JPY 100,000,000, rising to JPY 300,000,000 when a carryover occurs; if the 1st prize pool reaches JPY 900,000,000, up to three winners could each take JPY 300,000,00026. The odds are 1 in 1,048,576 for 1st, about 1 in 34,953 for 2nd, and about 1 in 62 for 5th25. There is also a 100-yen version with a 1st prize of about JPY 100,000, won by matching all 6 numbers, with 2nd for one miss and 3rd for two25. See DUNK for the details.

WINNER comes in two forms. The single-match version asks you to pick the outcome of one game from 16 options, with a 1 in 16 chance of winning27. The competition version asks you to predict the champion and runner-up of a tournament from 32 paired options, such as Akita winning and Nagoya finishing second27. Buying WINNER on the official site also requires Club toto membership, and its purchase method differs from toto, BIG and DUNK, so check its own guide before combining them28. See WINNER for more.

Collecting winnings

How you collect depends on where you bought.

Online purchases are the easiest: winnings are transferred automatically to your registered bank account, so there is nothing to remember18.

Shop and convenience store purchases are paid in cash, and nothing is transferred automatically29. The thresholds per ticket are30:

  • Up to JPY 100,000: in cash at booths, credit unions handling the sports lottery, or 7-Eleven. Note that 7-Eleven pays only up to JPY 15,000, and some booths cap at JPY 10,000 or JPY 50,000.
  • Over JPY 100,000: at a credit union handling the sports lottery.
  • Over JPY 500,000: a credit union procedure, then either collection at the counter after 12 business days or a transfer to a designated account29.

For DUNK payouts you need the winning ticket and an identity document such as a driver's license or My Number card31.

To check whether you won, click the result confirmation button on the official site's top page, select the lottery type and draw number, enter your reference number, and display the result. Club toto members can instead log in and check purchase history, filtered by product, period and result32. In person, results can be checked at lottery shops and 7-Eleven stores only4.

Common Questions

How much does a toto ticket cost?

Every toto game costs JPY 100 per bet. A single bet predicts all matches in one pattern; a multi bet, where you cover two or three outcomes for a match, costs more because it covers more combinations.

What time does toto sales close?

At lottery shops, sales close at 12:00 noon on the final sales day. At convenience store terminals the cutoff is 11:30 AM, and online sales close at 19:00 on the final day for non-J.League matches.

Can I buy toto online?

Yes. You can buy on the official sports lottery site or on partner sites such as Yahoo! toto, au PAY toto, SMBC toto and Rakuten toto. Buying on the official site requires joining Club toto, the free membership scheme.

Do I need a Club toto account to buy on the official site?

Yes. Purchases on the official site, whether paid online or at a convenience store, require Club toto membership. Partner sites run their own accounts instead.

How do I check toto results?

You can check online by clicking the result confirmation button on the official site and entering your reference number, or log in to Club toto and view your purchase history. In person, checking is possible at lottery shops and 7-Eleven stores.

How are toto winnings paid out?

Winnings from online purchases are transferred automatically to your bank account. Shop-bought tickets are paid in cash at the shop, at 7-Eleven, or at credit unions handling the sports lottery, with larger amounts requiring a credit union procedure.

What is the biggest toto prize ever possible?

The toto first prize is capped at JPY 100,000,000, rising to JPY 500,000,000 when a carryover occurs. The wider sports lottery family goes higher: MEGA BIG has produced the largest prize in Japanese lottery history.
