How a lottery draw works: the basic steps
A draw is a short, tightly scripted event. The numbers come out of a machine or a computer, the result is confirmed, and it is published. Everything around it exists to make sure the number you are holding can be checked against a result nobody could have altered.
The sequence is broadly the same everywhere. Tickets close for sale, the draw is held at the scheduled time, the winning numbers are recorded, and the results are broadcast or posted. In Thailand, the Government Lottery Office starts broadcasting the results at 14.30 and runs until about 16.00, so the whole thing is over inside roughly ninety minutes1. If you have a ticket, that broadcast is the moment you find out.
What happens after the draw is the part most players never see. When a prize is claimed in person, the claimant signs the back of every winning ticket and receives a queue card9. Later in the process, the claimant checks the payout details on screen, including name, prize amount and any tax or levy, and confirms with an electronic signature before the money is paid9. That confirmation step is the last checkpoint in the chain that starts with the draw itself.

Draw machines and random number generators
There are two ways an official draw produces numbers, and both are designed to be verifiable.

The first is a physical draw machine, the ball-and-drum setup most people picture. Balls are mixed and drawn one at a time in public, often on camera, so anyone watching can see the numbers come out.
The second is a random number generator, or RNG. This is software that produces the winning numbers, and it is used by some of the largest lotteries in the world. In Canada, for example, draw-based lotteries use a Random Number Generator for the reveal of winning numbers for LOTTO MAX, LOTTO 6/49, DAILY GRAND, LOTTARIO and ONTARIO 493. An RNG draw is not a lesser draw. It is the official method for those games, and the results are just as binding.
The practical point for you is simple: whichever method a game uses, you cannot see or influence the mechanism, and you do not need to. What matters is that the result is published and that your ticket can be checked against it. If you want to know whether a specific game uses balls or an RNG, that is usually stated in the game's own rules.
Draw schedules: Mark Six and the Thai Government Lottery
Draw schedules are fixed and published in advance, which is what lets you plan around them.
Thailand's Government Lottery draws twice a month, on the 1st and the 16th of every month1. There are standing exceptions. The New Year draw is held on 30 December each year, the Teachers' Day draw on 17 January, and the Labour Day draw on 2 May. If a scheduled draw falls on an important religious day, it is moved1. So the calendar is regular but not rigid, and the exceptions repeat every year.
Hong Kong's Mark Six runs on a much tighter cycle. It is drawn every Tuesday and Thursday, with some Golden Mark Six draws held on Fridays2. Since September 2004 there have also been draws on Saturdays or Sundays when no horse racing is scheduled, which brings the average to about three draws a week2. If you are in Hong Kong for a short trip, that frequency means you will almost certainly be there for a draw.
Japan's Loto 6 follows a similar twice-weekly rhythm, drawn every Monday and Thursday10. That is a useful pattern to remember across the region: the big number-selection games tend to cluster on two or three fixed weekdays, while the printed-ticket lotteries run on fixed calendar dates.
Game formats: pick 6 from 49 and ticket types
Most number-selection lotteries work the same way. You choose a set of numbers from a pool, and you win if the draw produces them.
The pool size is what distinguishes one game from another. Japan's Loto 6 asks you to choose 6 different numbers from 1 to 4310. The Philippines offers several options:
- Super Lotto 6/49 asks for six numbers from 1 to 49 in any order, and offers a System Play option that covers multiple number combinations12
- Mega Lotto 6/45 uses six numbers from 1 to 4512
- Lotto 6/42 uses six numbers from 1 to 42, and offers Lucky Pick, where the machine generates your combination for you12
- Grand Lotto 6/55 runs on a shared-prize consolation system, with the jackpot varying according to ticket sales12
Smaller digit games sit alongside the big ones. 2D Lotto asks you to pick two numbers from 1 to 31 and match the exact winning combination in the correct order, with Random Pick and the Rambolito System available12. The Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office added three-digit (3D), four-digit (4D) and six-digit (6D) games after its original lotto launch13.
Japan's sports lottery splits into four broad families: the computer-predicted basketball game DUNK!, the no-prediction BIG family, football result prediction toto, and the single-match WINNER6. If you want the full comparison of number pools and bonus balls across the region, see pick-6 lotto games.
| Game type | How you play | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Pick 6 from a pool | Choose 6 numbers, any order | Loto 6 (1 to 43), Super Lotto 6/49 |
| Digit games | Match exact digits in order | 2D Lotto (two numbers, 1 to 31) |
| Printed ticket | Buy a pre-printed number | Thai Government Lottery |
| Sports pool | Predict match results | toto, WINNER, DUNK! |
When draws are canceled, postponed or suspended
Draws do not always happen on schedule, and the reasons are usually mundane.
In August 2024, the announcement and confirmation of results for Draw No. 1475 was postponed to on or after Tuesday 27 August 2024, affecting toto, mini toto Group B, BIG, MEGA BIG, 100-yen BIG, BIG1000 and mini BIG8. The same postponement applied to Draw No. 218 for WINNER single-match football prediction8. Note what was postponed: the announcement and confirmation of results, not the underlying event.
Suspensions can be broader. In March 2020, the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office suspended lotto, digit games and Keno nationwide starting 4 p.m. on Tuesday 17 March, along with the operations of its outlets, with the small-town lottery affected in Luzon only14. That was a nationwide pause, not a single canceled draw.
There is also a cancellation right that belongs to you. For Vietnam's computerized number-selection lottery, tickets bought through a terminal for matrix and number-series products may be canceled at the place of purchase no later than 30 minutes before the draw, while fast-draw tickets and phone or internet tickets cannot be canceled15. Canceled tickets cannot claim prizes15. If you buy early and change your mind, that 30-minute window is your only chance.
Prize pools and jackpots
The size of a jackpot is not fixed. Most lottery jackpots are progressive, which means jackpots that are not won roll over between successive draws and get larger3. That is the whole mechanism behind a headline jackpot: nobody won last time, so the money carries forward.

This is why the same game can pay out a modest prize one week and a record one a few weeks later, with no change to the rules. The rollover is built in. For how far that can go, and where caps apply, see jackpot rollovers and the biggest lottery jackpots.
Thailand's Government Lottery works differently, because it is a printed-ticket game with a fixed prize structure rather than a rolling jackpot. One set of tickets carries 14,168 prizes totaling THB 48,000,00016. Within that set, the two-digit last prize pays THB 10,000 and is drawn once, while the three-digit last prize pays THB 4,000 and is drawn twice16. Those figures assume the set sells out.
Rules for buyers: age, sales channels and claiming prizes
Age limits vary by country, and they are enforced at the point of sale.
In Thailand, buyers of the Government Lottery must not be under 20 years of age, and the same minimum applies to digital tickets bought through the Paotang app5. Sale inside schools is prohibited5. Tickets are priced at THB 80 each17, and the official price is 80 baht, though street prices have run higher, with a reported minimum of 90 baht19.
Japan's sports lottery is stricter on age. Purchase is prohibited for anyone under 19, and online sales enforce age and identity verification at member registration7. Shops sell face to face only and check photo ID for anyone whose age of 19 or over is unclear6. Persons under 19 may not buy or receive lottery tickets at all6.
Vietnam sets its minimum at 18. Participants in lottery prize draws must be 18 or older, and must be Vietnamese citizens, Vietnamese residing abroad, or foreigners legally entering Vietnam, and must not be restricted in or deprived of civil act capacity20.
On claiming, Thailand's process is the most documented. You must book a queue through the online booking system on the GLO website before you go21. At the G floor counter, you reserve online in advance via the website, the GLO Lottery app or a QR code, one queue per person, up to 200 tickets22. Bring the winning ticket signed on the back and your ID card21. Claims run Monday to Friday, excluding official holidays, from 08.30 to 15.00 with no midday break23. The deadline is two years from the draw date, after which the money goes to state revenue16. You can also claim through three banks acting as agents, where a service charge applies22.
The Government Lottery Office is at 359 Nonthaburi Road, Tha Sai subdistrict, Mueang Nonthaburi district, Nonthaburi province 1100024. For general inquiries, the call center is 0 2528 9999, open 07.30 to 15.30 for status checks by advance buyers and bookers25. Lost ticket hold inquiries go to the Law Office on 0 2528 901326.
If you are claiming elsewhere in the region, the documents and counters differ by country. How to claim a lottery prize walks through the options, and unclaimed lottery prizes covers what happens when nobody comes forward.
