What Is the APT Shot Clock Format?

The APT Shot Clock format gives every player a fixed time to act, with extra time-bank chips for tough decisions. Here is how it works at Asian Poker Tour events and how to register.

What the APT is and where it runs events

The Asian Poker Tour is one of the longest-running live poker tours in the region, and it runs festivals at casinos and poker rooms across Asia rather than at a single fixed venue. Each stop is its own series with its own schedule, buy-ins and number of events, so the experience at one festival can look quite different from another.

The scale varies a lot. APT Da Nang, Vietnam 2022 ran 35 events1. APT Hanoi, Vietnam 2023 ran 41 events7. APT Taipei, Taiwan 2023 ran 45 events5. APT Summer Series Hanoi, Vietnam 2023 ran 48 events3. The largest recent example in the schedule is APT Manila Classic 2025, which ran 101 events6.

That range matters if you are choosing a first APT stop. A 35-event series is a tighter schedule with fewer side events and a smaller field. A 101-event series means something is running most of the day, with more satellites, more side events and more chances to find a buy-in that suits your budget.

The tour also runs online qualifiers and country-exclusive events through partner poker rooms, which is how many players win or buy their way into a live APT festival without paying the full buy-in at the cage. APT Thailand Exclusive at APT Jeju, for example, ran at 5:00 PM Thailand time and 6:00 PM Hong Kong time, so players in different markets could follow the same event8.

If you want the wider picture of how the APT compares with other regional tours, the Asian poker tours comparison covers APT, APPT, JOPT, Triton and the WSOP Circuit side by side.

Registering for an APT event: accounts, ID and receipts

Registration is the part first-timers get wrong, so here is the sequence in plain order.

Registering for an APT event: accounts, ID and receipts

Every player must register with the Asian Poker Tour to be able to participate in any APT event1. That is not optional and it is not something the dealer can sort out for you at the table.

You can create your APT account online before you travel, and existing players can update their account information the same way4. Doing this in advance is the single easiest way to avoid a queue on day one of a festival, when the registration desk is busiest.

At the venue, the process runs like this1:

  1. Go to the registration desk and show your ID, or state your name if staff can already find you in the system.
  2. Tell the registration staff which tournament or tournaments you want to enter.
  3. You will be issued Tournament Receipts for those events.
  4. Take the receipts to the cashier, pay, and have them verified.

Only after the receipts are paid and verified are you actually entered. If you walk away after step 2 without paying, you are not in the tournament.

Some stops add a venue requirement on top of APT registration. APT Manila Classic 2025 required players to hold both an APT Membership Card and a Metro Membership Card to register for the tournament6. If you are heading to a specific stop, check that series page for extra card or membership requirements before you fly.

For buy-in and payout questions, APT Manila Classic 2025 directed players to registrations@apt.poker6. That is the practical route if you need to confirm a figure before you commit to a trip.

Player Release Form for first-time players

If it is your first time playing in an APT event, the registration team will walk you through the APT Registration System rather than leaving you to work it out3. As part of that, you may be asked to give or confirm your details and to fill in and sign the Player Release Form7.

In practice this is a short administrative step, not a test. You confirm who you are, you sign, and you move on to the cashier. The reason it exists is that the tour needs a record of who is playing and on what terms, and first-time players are the group that has not yet provided it.

What to bring to make this quick:

  • A valid government-issued photo ID. APT Philippines 2022 stated plainly that a valid ID is required for tournament registration as proof of identity and age2.
  • Your APT account details, if you created the account online4.
  • The specific tournaments you want, so staff can issue the right receipts in one pass1.
  • Any venue membership card the stop requires, such as the Metro Membership Card at APT Manila Classic 20256.

If you are registering for a venue that is new to you, the card room rules and etiquette guide covers the basics of getting a seat, acting in turn and tipping, which is useful context before your first live APT event.

APT festivals in Korea: Incheon and Jeju

South Korea has become a regular APT destination, with Incheon and Jeju as the main hosts.

APT Incheon, South Korea 2023 ran from 25 August to 3 September9. APT Incheon, South Korea 2026 ran from 7 August to 16 August10. Those are the two Incheon dates in the schedule, and the gap between them shows the stop has been repeated rather than run once.

Jeju is the other Korean host. APT Jeju 2024 took place at Jeju Shinhwa Resort in Jeju, South Korea11. APT Jeju, South Korea 2026 runs from 25 September to 7 October4.

If you are planning around a Korean stop, note that the tour's own homepage carries the current Jeju dates, so the schedule is the place to confirm before booking flights4. Schedules can also change: APT Da Nang, Vietnam 2022 stated that its schedule may be updated without prior notice1. Treat any published schedule as provisional until you are on site.

Where the tour has traveled: from Hanoi to Taipei

Vietnam has hosted a large share of APT festivals, and the dates are worth knowing if you are timing a trip.

APT Hanoi, Vietnam 2023 ran from 3 February to 12 February7. APT Phu Quoc, Vietnam 2023 ran from 24 March to 2 April12. APT Da Nang, Vietnam 2022 ran for 12 days1. APT Summer Series Hanoi, Vietnam 2023 added another 48-event series in the same country3.

Taiwan is the other major stop. APT Taipei, Taiwan 2023 ran from 28 April to 7 May5. APT Taiwan 2022 was held at CTP Club Taichung from September 23 to 25 and at CTP Club Taipei from September 27 to October 513.

The Taipei Poker Classic also ran country-exclusive final tables, with separate final table times for Hong Kong, Taiwan and Thailand: Hong Kong on September 28 at 8:30 PM HKT, Taiwan on September 30 at 2:30 PM HKT, and Thailand on September 30 at 9:00 PM HKT14. That structure is worth knowing if you are qualifying online from one of those markets, because your final table may run on a different clock than the main live festival.

The Philippines has hosted APT events too, including APT Philippines 2022, where a valid ID was required for tournament registration2. APT Manila Classic 2025 was the largest of the recent stops at 101 events6.

Online poker rooms for APT-style play

If you cannot make a live stop, or you want to qualify for one, online poker rooms run APT-branded tournaments and country-exclusive events. Natural8 has hosted APT Jeju country exclusives and APT Taipei Poker Classic country exclusives8.

Online play comes with its own table rules, and they are stricter than most casual players expect. Natural8's house rules include a penalty system for players who leave a cash table after playing fewer than 10 hands: the first refusal carries no penalty, the second is a 5-minute block from tables at the same blind level, the third is 15 minutes, the fourth is 30 minutes, and the fifth is 60 minutes, all within any 12-hour period15.

That rule exists to stop players from hopping in and out of tables and disrupting the game for everyone else. If you are used to leaving tables freely in a live card room, read the house rules before you sit down online.

Regulated markets handle poker rooms differently, and the rules can be specific. In Kahnawake, a poker room may be open to the public only from 12:00 p.m. (noon) ET until 6:00 a.m. ET, seven days a week16. In the Philippines, the gaming regulator publishes a list of poker operators with issued gaming licenses, which includes rooms such as Masters Poker Club, Red Dragon Poker Room, Texas Holdem Café, Poker Brothers and 9D Poker Club17. Licensed venues also have documentary requirements for player registration, including one valid government-issued ID card with a photograph, full name and date of birth, plus personal details such as nationality, address and source of income18.

Common Questions

Do I need to register in advance for an APT tournament?

What documents do I need at APT registration?

Bring a valid government-issued photo ID. It is required as proof of identity and age for tournament registration. Some stops, such as APT Manila Classic 2025, also require a second membership card for the venue, so check the specific event page before you go.

What is the Player Release Form?

It is a form first-time APT players may be asked to fill in and sign during registration. Staff will help you through the APT Registration System, confirm your details, and have you sign the release before you can be issued tournament receipts.
