Genting Highlands vs Resorts World Sentosa

Genting Highlands vs Resorts World Sentosa

Location and setting: a hilltop in Malaysia vs Sentosa island

The two resorts could hardly feel more different once you arrive.

Resorts World Genting sits in the mountains just outside Kuala Lumpur. It is a hilltop resort, cooler than the city below, reached by road or by cable car. The resort describes itself simply as "Resorts World Genting, Malaysia" on its own site5. For most visitors the trip up is part of the experience: you climb out of the tropical heat into cloud forest, and the whole complex is built into the hillside rather than spread across flat ground7.

Resorts World Sentosa is the opposite kind of place. It sits on Sentosa, Singapore's resort island just off the southern coast of the main island8. The resort describes itself as "a lifestyle destination resort located on Singapore's resort island of Sentosa"8. Sentosa is an island off Singapore's shore, and the resort complex includes a Universal Studios theme park9. Everything is compact and connected: the casino, hotels, theme park and waterfront sit within walking distance of each other.

The practical difference for a visitor is how you get there and what surrounds you. Genting is a destination you travel to and stay at, because there is little else nearby. Sentosa is part of Singapore, so you can stay on the island or in the city and move between them easily.

This is the single biggest difference between the two, and it affects what you can do at each.

Legal status: Malaysia's only licensed casino vs one of two in Singapore

Resorts World Genting is the only licensed land-based casino in Malaysia10. It operates under a specific license, and it is the only legal casino in the country1. That means if you want to play at a licensed casino in Malaysia, this is the one. Legal poker in Malaysia is restricted to this mountain resort10. The operator behind it, Genting Malaysia Berhad, is the only licensed casino gaming services operator in Malaysia11.

Singapore works differently. There are only two licensed casino gaming services operators in Singapore: Marina Bay Sands and Resorts World Sentosa2. Casino gambling is legalized at both12. The law itself is explicit: the Casino Control Act states "Two casinos only"3. So Singapore has a hard cap of two, and Resorts World Sentosa is one of them.

For a visitor, the practical takeaway is simple. In Malaysia you have one licensed casino to choose from. In Singapore you have two, and they compete with each other, which shapes everything from hotel rates to restaurant choices.

One thing to keep in mind: playing on offshore casino websites is illegal in Malaysia, and players have been prosecuted. If you are in Malaysia, stick to the licensed venue.

Games and casino offering at each resort

Both resorts run full casino floors, but the layout and the game mix differ.

At Genting Highlands, gaming is spread across two distinct casinos: Genting Casino and the modern SkyCasino13. That split matters if you are planning a visit, because the two are in different parts of the resort. When the main casino floor was closed for upgrades, the resort organized a shuttle service to SkyCasino, located at SkyAvenue, so guests could continue gaming14. That tells you the two venues are separate enough that you may need transport between them.

At Resorts World Sentosa, the casino is one part of a larger complex. The resort lists "the premier Resorts World Convention Centre, and Resorts World Casino" among its facilities8. The casino itself offers a defined set of games under official rules: Baccarat Games; Blackjack and Pontoon Games; Dice Games; Poker Games; Roulette Games; Semi-Automated Electronic Table Games (ETGs); and Other Games15. That list is set by the regulator, so what you can play is fixed rather than decided by the operator.

If you want detail on how any of these play, the site covers them individually: baccarat rules, blackjack and pontoon rules, roulette rules, sic bo rules and dragon tiger rules. For the wider Asian game set, including fan tan and pai gow, see Asian casino table games.

Attractions beyond the casino: theme parks, waterparks and hotels

Both resorts are built so that a non-gambling companion has plenty to do. This is often the deciding factor for families.

At Resorts World Genting, the attractions include Skytropolis Indoor Theme Park, Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park, Sky VR, BigTop Video Games Park, Eufloria and the SkyWay cable car5. That is a mix of indoor and outdoor, which matters because the weather at altitude changes quickly. You can spend a full day on rides and cable cars without going near the casino.

At Resorts World Sentosa, the lineup covers a wide range of attractions6:

  • Universal Studios Singapore
  • Adventure Cove Waterpark
  • the Singapore Oceanarium
  • a research and learning center
  • six luxury hotels
  • WEAVE
  • the Resorts World Convention Centre
  • the casino

The resort describes itself as home to Universal Studios Singapore and Adventure Cove Waterpark, as well as ocean institutes6.

Sentosa has also been expanding. The resort announced two new sections for its Universal Studios theme park, an enlarged S.E.A. Aquarium becoming the Singapore Oceanarium, a theater converted into an "Adventure Dining Playhouse," and redeveloped waterfront areas with a free attraction, public event space and a retail and dining promenade16. The same expansion adds two new hotels with a total of 1,100 keys and increases MICE space by 11,000 square meters (118,360 square feet)16. The major new amenities were slated to come online in 2024 and beyond16, so check current status before you plan around any specific new attraction.

Who owns each resort

Genting Malaysia Berhad owns and operates Resorts World Genting in Malaysia, along with Resorts World Casino New York City in the United States, Resorts World Bimini in the Bahamas, over 40 casinos in the United Kingdom, and the Malaysian resorts Resorts World Kijal and Resorts World Langkawi17. So the Genting name you see in Malaysia is part of a much larger international group18.

Who owns each resort

Resorts World Sentosa is operated by Resorts World at Sentosa Pte. Ltd., which holds the casino license and runs the games under the rules set out by the regulator15. It is one of the two licensed operators in Singapore2.

The ownership point matters practically in one way: the two resorts are separate businesses in separate countries, even though both carry the Genting name. Your loyalty program, comps and hotel points at one do not automatically carry to the other. If you are working out how rewards work across Asian casinos, see Casino Rewards Cards in Asia.

Practical differences for a visitor

A few things change depending on which resort you pick.

Getting there. Genting Highlands is a hilltop resort outside Kuala Lumpur, reached by road or cable car7. Resorts World Sentosa is on Sentosa island, and the resort publishes its own getting-here directions19. The Sentosa address is 8 Sentosa Gateway, Sentosa Island, Singapore 09826919.

When it opened. Resorts World Sentosa was set to open by early 201020, with a soft opening targeted for end 200921 and a phased opening starting early 201022. The casino opened during the Lunar New Year period in February 20104. It was the first of Singapore's two casino resorts to open23.

Self-exclusion. At Genting Highlands, players can take permanent self-exclusion from all Genting Highlands Malaysia casinos. Revoking it can only be requested after 6 months and is subject to review and approval by Resorts World Genting24. If you want to understand how these tools work across the region, see Responsible Gambling Desks, Visit Limits and Spend Tools Inside Asian Casinos.

Country rules. The two resorts sit under different national regimes, so entry requirements, age rules and social safeguards differ. For the full picture on each country, see Can I Gamble in Malaysia? and Can I Gamble in Singapore?.
