How the two games differ in one line
In baccarat you bet on which of two hands will get closer to nine, and the dealer does everything else4. In blackjack you play your own cards against the dealer, deciding on every hand whether to take another card, stop, double your bet or split a pair5.
That single difference shapes everything else on this page. Baccarat is faster to learn and impossible to play badly, because there is nothing to play. Blackjack rewards study: the same table can cost a careless player several times more than a careful one. Both are card games dealt to a total, both move quickly, and both sit near the bottom of the casino's price range when played well. Which one suits you depends on whether you want to watch or to act.
Baccarat: rules, card values and the third-card tableau
Baccarat, also called punto banco, is a comparing game between two hands labeled Player and Banker. You do not get a hand of your own; you bet on one of the two, or on a tie. The hand whose total is closest to nine wins, and nine is the highest possible total7.

Card values are simple. Cards 2 through 9 count at face value. The 10, jack, queen and king count as zero. Aces count as one7. If a hand's total goes over nine, only the rightmost digit counts: a hand of 12 counts as 2, and 25 counts as 58.
Once bets are placed, and all bets must be down before the deal, the dealer slides out four cards: two to the Player box and two to the Banker box4. If either hand totals 8 or 9 on its first two cards, that is a natural, both hands stand, and the round ends immediately with bets paid4.
If there is no natural, the hands draw according to a fixed tableau, and the dealer applies it, not you:
- The Player hand draws a third card on any total from 0 to 5, and always stands on 6 or 74.
- The Banker hand's draw depends on its own total and, in some cases, on the value of the Player's third card. On totals of 0, 1 or 2 the Banker draws; on 3 it draws unless the Player's third card is an 8; on 4 it draws against a Player third card of 2 through 7; on 5 it draws against 4 through 7; on 6 it draws only against a 6 or 7; and on 7 it always stands4.
You never need to memorize this. The dealer runs the whole sequence, and in live online versions the software does the same. Your entire role is choosing where to put your chips before the cards come out8.
The game is normally dealt from eight decks of 52 cards, held in a shoe with cut cards marking the reshuffle point3. Some tables and online versions offer six decks or a single deck, which slightly shifts the odds on each bet, but the drawing rules never change9.
Blackjack: rules, card values and player decisions
Blackjack, also called 21, is a game against the dealer, not against the other players. The object is to finish with a hand closer to 21 than the dealer's without going over. Go over 21 and you bust and lose immediately, whatever the dealer does later5.
Card values are just as simple as baccarat's. Number cards count at face value. The king, queen and jack count as 10 each. The ace counts as either 1 or 11, whichever works better for the hand, and you can treat it either way5.
The deal follows a set order: one card face up to each player who has wagered, one card face up to the dealer, a second card face up to each player, and a second card face down to the dealer10. If the dealer's up card is a ten or an ace, the dealer checks the hole card for blackjack. If the dealer has it, the round ends at once and all players lose unless they also have blackjack, in which case they keep their original bet5.
The dealer then plays by a fixed rule with no choices: draw on totals of 16 or less, stand on 17 or more12. Your job is to act on your own hand first, and this is where the game lives. On every hand you can:
- Hit and take another card, or stand and stop13.
- Double down, doubling your initial bet in exchange for exactly one more card, allowed only on your first two cards5. Some jurisdictions restrict this further: in Macau's classic blackjack rules, doubling is allowed only on a first two cards totaling 11, with one card received14.
- Split a pair into two separate hands by matching your original bet, then play each hand in turn5.
- Surrender, where offered, giving up half your wager and withdrawing from the hand13.
- Take insurance when the dealer shows an ace, a side bet that the dealer's hole card is worth 1015.
A two-card ace plus a ten-value card is a blackjack, and it beats every other hand. It also pays a premium, which we come to below.
Payouts compared: banker, player, tie and blackjack
The two games pay out in very different ways, and the differences are worth knowing before you sit down.
Baccarat. A winning Player bet pays even money, 1 to 1, with nothing deducted7. A winning Banker bet also pays even money, but the house takes a 5% commission on winnings, so the payout is 0.95 to 14. The tie bet pays 8 to 1, but as the house edge section shows, it is priced to be the worst value on the layout by a wide margin. Some tables offer a no-commission version: at Paradise City in Incheon, for example, a standard table deducts the 5% on banker wins, while the no-commission table instead pays only half of a winning banker bet when the banker wins with a total of 616.
Blackjack. Ordinary winning hands pay even money. A blackjack pays a premium: the standard payout is 3 to 2, so a 10 bet wins 15, and at Paradise City the table pays 1.5 times the bet on a player blackjack3. Insurance, where offered, pays 2 to 13.
The payout to check before you sit down is the blackjack payout itself. Some tables, especially on live casino floors and online, pay only 6 to 5 on a blackjack. That means the same 10 bet wins only 12 instead of 15, which meaningfully raises the house edge over a session17. Variations go further: in Super Fun 21, a blackjack in diamonds pays 2 to 1 but all other blackjacks pay only even money18.
A different animal. Macau's licensed tables also spread Three Card Baccarat, a comparing game on three cards with its own paytable: a win over the dealer pays 1 to 1, odd or even pays 1 to 1, three court cards pay 16 to 1, a points win pays 8 to 1 and a tie pays 20 to 119.
House edge: baccarat bets vs blackjack play
Here is the honest comparison, and it is closer than most people expect.

In an eight-deck baccarat game, the house edge on the three main bets is as follows.
Mini-baccarat tables carry the same numbers7. So the best baccarat bet, banker, costs you about 1.06% of everything you wager over time, and you cannot improve on that by playing differently, because there is nothing to play.
Blackjack's edge depends entirely on how you play. With correct basic strategy the house edge is about 0.5%, which means roughly 99.5% of each unit wagered is returned to players over time; in a standard eight-deck game, players win about 42% of hands, lose about 49% and push around 9%20. Some rule sets do slightly better: one widely used live blackjack rule set is quoted at roughly 0.4%21, a four-to-eight-deck strategy table lists 0.46% for one live variant and 0.14% for Blackjack Switch22, and one online operator quotes 0.57% for its own blackjack game23. Standard live blackjack played with basic strategy lands at approximately 0.5%24.
But blackjack's edge is a range, not a number. Ignore basic strategy and play by instinct and the house edge can climb to around 4%20. Sit at a 6:5 table and follow basic strategy and you still give up about 2%20. And card counting, where it is tolerated, can lower the edge by a further 1 to 2%25.
The short version: a well-chosen blackjack table played with a chart in your head is cheaper than baccarat's best bet. A badly played blackjack table is several times more expensive. Baccarat's banker bet is the same price for everyone who places it, which is its own kind of comfort.
Skill or chance: where your decisions matter
Baccarat is a straightforward game of pure chance26. Once your chips are on the layout, nothing you do, think or feel changes the outcome by a single card. The tableau is fixed, the dealer applies it, and the only "skill" is choosing the banker bet over the tie, which is arithmetic rather than skill.
Blackjack is the opposite case. Unlike most table games, skill genuinely improves your odds, and mastering the game means learning a detailed set of decisions26. Basic strategy tells you, for example, to double a hard 9 against a dealer's 3 through 6, and to split 6s against a dealer's 3 through 622. At a finer level, the right play can even depend on which cards make up your total: in single-deck blackjack you normally stand with 12 against a 4, but if that 12 is a 10 and a 2, the odds favor hitting11.
None of this makes blackjack beatable in the ordinary sense. The house edge never disappears; correct play just shrinks it to its minimum20. But it does mean the two games ask different things of you. Baccarat asks for one good decision per round, made before the deal. Blackjack asks for a good decision on every hand, made under time pressure at a full table. If you want the full picture of where decisions matter across the casino, see does skill matter in casino games, and for the blackjack chart itself, see blackjack basic strategy.
Side bets and variations you will meet
Both games come with extras attached, and the extras are where the house makes its easiest money.

Baccarat side bets. The classic Macau rules allow optional Player Pair and Banker Pair wagers, betting that the first two cards of that hand form a pair of the same rank regardless of color or suit27. Online tables extend the list to Player Pair, Banker Pair, Either Pair and Perfect Pair, plus further bonus bets28. The wider family of baccarat side bets includes Dragon Bonus, 4-5-6, Lucky Bonus, 3-Card Six, Dragon 7, Panda 8, Royal Match, Bellagio Match and Matching Dragon9. Macau also licenses Mahjong Baccarat, where all bets must be placed before the banker shakes the dice, with no additions or moves accepted after29.
Blackjack side bets. Insurance is the classic: offered when the dealer shows an ace, it is a separate wager that the hole card is worth 1015. The 21+3 bet pays nine times your stake when your first two cards plus the dealer's up card form a flush, straight, three of a kind or straight flush30. Online live tables commonly add Perfect Pairs and other combination bets alongside 21+331, and some Japanese-licensed tables offer a match side bet on the first four cards dealt to a pair of betting areas forming a specified combination32.
Variations. Blackjack Switch deals you two hands and lets you swap the second card between them15. War Blackjack combines a Casino War bet with a blackjack bet, and if your war card is lower you lose both and skip the blackjack round21. One Blackjack, a live version, deals a single shared hand to all players from eight decks, with the dealer hitting to 16 and standing on 17, plus 21+3, Perfect Pairs and Crazy Seven side bets31. Super Fun 21 twists the blackjack payout as described above18. For the full rundown, see blackjack side bets and baccarat side bets.
Where the games sit in Asian casinos and online
Baccarat is the game of Asian high-stakes play. In Macao's VIP rooms, baccarat is typically the only game offered, and it is the preferred game among Chinese players6. Its house edge of about 1.06% on banker bets is part of its appeal6. The mass floors carry it everywhere too, in commission and no-commission forms, with squeeze options, pair bets and score cards at the table16.
Blackjack travels the other way: it is the standard low-and-mid-stakes table in most jurisdictions. Paradise Casino Busan in South Korea lists blackjack, baccarat, roulette and slots among its facilities34, and the Korean casino guides describe both games side by side, blackjack as beating the dealer's hand without exceeding 21 and baccarat as betting on which hand comes closer to nine13. In Cambodia, Ha Tien Vegas runs baccarat tables with the standard two cards dealt to each side and the usual 1:1 banker payout less commission35.
Online, both games are staples of the live dealer studio. Japanese players can find live versions of blackjack, baccarat, roulette and specialty games like Dragon Tiger and Sic Bo36. The live tables mirror the physical ones closely: baccarat runs on a standard round table with three betting spots for Player, Tie and Banker, and blackjack on a table seating up to seven players facing the dealer, with winning bets paying at least 1 to 1 and blackjack at least 3 to 23. Common Questions
Which game is easier for a beginner to learn?
Baccarat. You place one of three bets before the deal and the dealer handles everything else, following fixed drawing rules. Blackjack asks you to make a decision on every hand, and playing those decisions badly costs you money, so it takes longer to learn well.
What does the 5% commission on banker bets mean in practice?
A winning banker bet pays even money, but the house keeps 5% of your winnings. Bet 10 on banker and win and you collect 9.50. It is the price of betting on the hand that wins slightly more often, and the dealer collects it at payout.
Why is the tie bet in baccarat considered a poor wager?
Because the house edge is around 14.36%, far above the roughly 1% you give up on banker or player. Ties simply do not happen often enough for the payout to make up for the losing rounds. Most players treat it as an occasional long shot.
How much does basic strategy actually reduce the blackjack house edge?
Played with correct basic strategy, blackjack carries a house edge of about 0.5%, among the lowest in the casino. Ignore the strategy and play by feel and the edge can climb to around 4%. The chart is what turns blackjack into a cheap game.
What is the difference between 3:2 and 6:5 blackjack tables?
It is the payout for a two-card 21. At 3:2 a 10 bet wins 15; at 6:5 the same bet wins only 12. That single change pushes the house edge from about 0.5% to about 2% even with perfect play, so the table's felt is worth reading before you sit.
Do I have to make any decisions in baccarat after placing my bet?
No. Once the cards are dealt the dealer follows a fixed set of drawing rules for both hands. Your only decision is which bet to place: player, banker or tie, plus any side bets. After that you just watch the hand play out.
How many decks are used in each game?
Both games commonly use eight decks of 52 cards in live and online casinos. Blackjack is also spread in four, six and single-deck versions, and the deck count changes the correct basic strategy chart, while baccarat's drawing rules stay the same.
Is a natural 9 in baccarat the same as a blackjack?
No. A natural in baccarat is a two-card total of 8 or 9, and it simply ends the hand with the higher natural winning. A blackjack is an ace plus a ten-value card, and it pays a premium of 3:2 rather than even money.
