The games Thai players actually play online
One directory lists 867 online casinos accepting players from Thailand, and many of them let you deposit and withdraw in Thai baht4. Many residents simply take to the global marketplace to gamble online5. Thailand has no licensed online casinos of its own, so the casino games Thai players play are almost all played at offshore sites.
The menu at these sites is broadly the same worldwide, but Asian players, Thai players included, gravitate toward a clear set of favorites:
- Baccarat. The number one table game across Asia. Some live casino lobbies run more than 50 baccarat tables with real dealers at once6. It is especially popular among high-rollers and Asian gamblers7.
- Blackjack. The main skill-based card game, with one of the lowest house edges in the casino when played with correct decisions8.
- Roulette. Both European and American versions, plus variants like Lightning Roulette with bonus multipliers up to 500x6.
- Slots and instant games. RNG-based games you play alone against software, covering everything from classic reels to crash games.
- Regional games. Dragon Tiger, Sic Bo and game shows appear alongside the big three at live dealer lobbies9.

Who can take part
Gambling is largely illegal inside Thailand, with a few exceptions such as betting on boxing and horse racing10. There are no licensed online casinos for Thai residents, so the casino games described on this page are played at offshore sites that accept Thai players4. Traditional card games like Pok Deng, covered in our Pok Deng page, live on in underground settings11.

The practical reality is that many Thai residents play casino games online anyway, using offshore operators, and enforcement targets operators and local agents rather than ordinary players. The risk for an individual player is low but not zero, and money held at an unlicensed offshore site has no local protection if the site fails. Everything else on this page is about the games themselves.
Baccarat: rules, payouts and why it dominates Asian tables
Baccarat, also known as punto banco, is one of the oldest and most popular games in casinos all over the world7. In Macao's VIP rooms, baccarat is typically the only game offered, and that preference carries across Asian gambling culture generally1. It is especially popular among high-rollers and Asian gamblers7.
The game is simple. Two hands are dealt, one for the player and one for the banker, two cards each12. You bet on which hand will end up closer to nine, the highest possible total13. All bets must be placed before the cards are dealt; there is no betting after the first two cards12.
Card values are easy:
- Aces count as 1
- 2 through 9 count at face value
- 10, jack, queen and king count as 013
If a hand's total exceeds 9, only the rightmost digit counts. A hand totaling 12 is worth 2; a hand totaling 25 is worth 512.
If either hand totals 8 or 9 on the first two cards, that is a natural. No more cards are dealt and all bets are settled13. Otherwise the drawing rules take over, and they are fixed, so you never make a decision:
- The player hand draws a third card if its first two cards total 0 to 5, and stands on 6 or 713
- The banker then draws or stands according to a fixed table: with a total of 0 to 2 the banker always draws; with 3 it draws unless the player's third card was an 8; with 4 it draws against a player third card of 2 to 7; with 5 against 4 to 7; with 6 against 6 or 7; and with 7 or more it always stands15
Payouts:
| Bet | Payout |
|---|---|
| Player wins | 1 to 1 |
| Banker wins | 1 to 1, minus a 5% commission |
| Tie | 8 to 1 |
The figures come from standard game rules13. On a $20 bet, a winning player hand pays $20 with no deductions, while a winning banker hand pays $20 minus the commission17.
Baccarat is a pure game of chance. There are no skills you can develop to improve your odds of winning13. That simplicity is exactly why it dominates: there is no strategy to learn, the house edge on the main bets is low, and the pace is fast.
Baccarat house edge: 1.06% on banker, 14.36% on tie
In the standard eight-deck game, the house edge is 1.06% on the banker bet, 1.24% on the player bet, and 14.36% on the tie14. The same figures appear in independent game guides: banker 1.06%, player 1.24%, tie 14.36%13. Research on Macao's gaming industry puts the banker edge at about 1.06% as well1.
What this means in practice: for every 100 units wagered on banker, you expect to lose about 1.06 units over the long run. On the tie bet, you expect to lose about 14.36 units, which is more than ten times worse. The 8 to 1 payout on ties does not come close to compensating.
A few things that shift the numbers slightly:
- Deck count matters a little. In a single-deck game the edges move to 1.01% on banker, 1.29% on player and 15.75% on tie14. Return tables exist for eight-deck, six-deck and one-deck variations7.
- Overall return to player for baccarat runs about 98.76% to 98.94%, depending on the bet18.
- Card counting baccarat is technically possible but nearly worthless. The best bet only switches to the player hand when a running count reaches -4 or less; otherwise it stays on the banker19. The gain is tiny.
The practical takeaway: bet banker or player, skip the tie, and ignore anyone selling a baccarat system.
Blackjack: how the game works against the dealer
Blackjack, also known as 21, is the opposite of baccarat in one key way: skill matters. Unlike other table games, playing blackjack well can genuinely improve your odds8.
The object is to beat the dealer, not the other players20. You do that by reaching a higher total than the dealer without going over 21, or by surviving while the dealer busts21.
The deal: every player at the table gets two cards, and the dealer gets two, only one of them face up21. Card values are simple: 2 through 10 count at face value, 10s, jacks, queens and kings are all worth 10, and an ace can count as 1 or 11, whichever helps you21. A two-card hand of an ace plus a 10-value card is a blackjack, worth 2121.
Your decisions each hand21:
- Hit: take another card
- Stand: keep your total
- Double: double your wager and take exactly one more card
- Split: turn a pair into two hands, each with a new bet equal to the original
- Surrender: where available, forfeit half your bet and end the hand
- Insurance: a side bet offered when the dealer shows an ace
If your total exceeds 21, you bust, and you automatically forfeit your bets and lose the round21. If the dealer's up card is a ten or an ace, the dealer checks for blackjack; if she has one, the round is over and all players lose automatically, unless a player also has blackjack, in which case that player keeps the original bet20.
The dealer follows fixed rules, typically standing on 17 and drawing on 16 or lower2. Online blackjack games commonly use eight decks dealt from a shoe22.
Blackjack payouts and odds: 3:2 for a natural, about 0.5% house edge
A natural blackjack, an ace plus a 10-value card, typically pays 3 to 2. A $20 bet wins $302. Some tables pay only 6 to 5 for a natural, where a $25 bet wins just $30, and that single change pushes the house edge from 0.5% up to 2%2. Always check the payout before you sit down; it is the single most important rule at the table.

Other payouts2:
- A winning standard hand pays 1 to 1
- A successful double down pays 1 to 1 on the increased wager
- Insurance pays 2 to 1
- Tied hands are a push: you keep your bet
The chance of being dealt a natural blackjack is about 4.8%2. In a standard eight-deck game with the dealer standing on soft 17 and blackjack paying 3:2, players win about 42% of hands, the dealer wins about 49%, and hands are tied about 9% of the time2.
How hand totals affect your chances23:
| Your hand | Win chance | Loss risk |
|---|---|---|
| 13 | 35% | 55% |
| 15 | 50% | 42% |
| 16 | 60% | 32% |
| 18 | 77% | 15% |
| 19 | 85% | 10% |
| 20 | 92% | 0.5% |
| 21 (blackjack) | 100% | 0% |
The dealer's up card matters enormously. The dealer busts about 42.9% of the time showing a 5, about 42.1% showing a 6, but only about 26% showing a 7, and less against stronger cards2. That is why basic strategy tells you to stand on stiff totals of 12 to 16 when the dealer shows a weak card of 2 to 6, and to hit when the dealer shows 7 through ace2.
Played with correct decisions, blackjack has one of the lowest house edges in the casino, around 0.5% for an eight-deck game paying 3:22. Careless play hands that edge right back to the house, and a table paying only 6:5 for a natural pushes it up to 2% even with basic strategy8.
Can you count cards online? In live dealer blackjack, yes, you can attempt it just like in a regular casino, but online casinos shuffle more frequently and use multiple decks to prevent it24. In RNG games, where the deck is effectively reshuffled every hand, counting is pointless.
Roulette: European vs American wheels and what bets pay
Roulette comes in two main versions. The European wheel has a single zero; the American wheel adds a double zero, and that extra pocket is what nearly doubles the house edge. European roulette returns about 97.3% to players over time6, while the overall roulette range across versions runs from 94.7% to 97.3%18. The American double-zero wheel carries a house edge of about 5.3%, while the European single-zero wheel's edge is about 2.7%6. The European version is still offered in many casinos as an alternative to the American one25.
The betting layout is the same at both. Inside bets are on single numbers or small groups; outside bets cover half the board at a time26.
What bets pay27:
| Bet | Payout |
|---|---|
| Single number (straight up) | 35 to 1 |
| Split (two numbers) | 17 to 1 |
| Column | 2 to 1 |
| Red or black | 1 to 1 |
| Odd or even | 1 to 1 |
Outside bets have better odds but lower payouts, either 1 to 1 on even-money bets or 2 to 1 on columns and dozens26. Note that the payout odds of 35 to 1 on a single number are lower than the true odds against hitting it, which is where the house edge lives27.
Variants add flavor without changing the core. Double Ball Roulette uses a single-zero European wheel with two balls instead of one, with stakes from $0.20 to $4,0009. Lightning Roulette keeps the usual betting options but adds bonus multipliers up to 500x on lucky numbers6. Some sites offer American and French roulette alongside each other, with slightly different rules3.
Side bets and other games: pairs, Keno and slots
Beyond the main bets, most baccarat tables offer side bets. The common ones are Player Pair, Banker Pair, Either Pair and Perfect Pair, plus additional bonus bets17. Some games include side bets such as Pairs or Perfect Pairs with higher payouts and higher risk14. The wider catalog of baccarat side bets includes Dragon Bonus, 4-5-6, Lucky Bonus, 3-Card Six, Dragon 7, Panda 8, Royal Match, Bellagio Match and Matching Dragon7. The pattern is always the same: bigger headline payouts, much worse odds than the main game.
Blackjack has its own side bets. Match the Dealer pays when one or both of your first two cards match the dealer's up card, with a match in both rank and suit paying more than rank alone28.
Then there are the games you play alone against software:
- Slots. RNG games with return percentages set by the game, not by any decision you make.
- Keno and novelty games. Number draws and instant games, generally with much higher house edges than the table games above.
- Crash games. Multiplier games where you cash out before the crash; their house edge of around 1% compares with baccarat's 1.06 to 1.24%29.
For a game with almost no decisions at all, Casino War has you bet on whether your card beats the dealer's card, with an optional tie bet30.
Live dealer tables vs RNG instant games
Online casino games come in two flavors, and the choice changes the experience more than the game itself.

Live dealer tables stream a real dealer, real cards and a real wheel from a studio. You place bets through the interface, the dealer handles the physical game, and you see every card turned. Live lobbies typically offer blackjack, baccarat, roulette, Dragon Tiger, Sic Bo and game shows9. Some operators run more than 50 live baccarat tables at once6. Bets at many live tables start at €0.10, so the entry price is low4. The pace is set by the dealer, other players occupy seats at shared tables, and the feel is close to a real casino floor.
RNG instant games are software simulations. Cards come from a shuffled virtual deck, the roulette wheel is animated, and results appear the instant you press the button. You play alone, at your own speed, usually with lower minimum bets than live tables. The trade-off is that card counting is impossible, since the deck is effectively reshuffled every hand.
Which suits you depends on what you want: the atmosphere and slower rhythm of a live table, or speed and privacy. The rules, payouts and house edges described earlier in this page apply to both formats, so the math does not change, only the experience.
Budgets, sessions and help
A few habits make the whole thing more sustainable:
- Set a budget and a time limit before you start. There are tools available on many gambling sites to help you monitor your play31. Decide the amount you can comfortably lose, treat it as the cost of the entertainment, and stop when it is gone.
- Match stakes to your budget. With bets starting at €0.10 at many live tables4, a small budget can still buy a long session. Betting your whole budget on a few hands is the fastest way to end the night early.
- Expect the house edge, not a profit. Baccarat's banker bet at 1.06%14 and blackjack at 0.5% with basic strategy2 are the best value on this page. The tie bet at 14.36% and most side bets are the worst. Over enough hands, the edge always tells.
- Try games before betting real money. RNG versions of baccarat, blackjack and roulette exist in free demo form at most sites, and they are the place to learn the third-card rules and the betting layout without spending anything.
- Know where help is. If gambling stops being fun, you can contact a helpline in Thailand for free and confidential support32. Our gambling help in Thailand page has the details.

Common Questions
What is the best bet in baccarat?
The banker bet. It carries a house edge of about 1.06%, the lowest of the three main bets, even after the 5% commission on winnings. The player bet is close behind at 1.24%, while the tie bet is far worse at 14.36%.
How much does a tie bet pay in baccarat?
A winning tie bet pays 8 to 1. That sounds generous, but the house edge is 14.36% in an eight-deck game, which is why most experienced players leave it alone and stick to banker or player.
Is card counting possible in online blackjack?
In live dealer blackjack you can attempt it, just as in a physical casino. But online tables shuffle more frequently and use multiple decks, usually eight, which makes counting far less effective than at a slow land-based table.
What is the difference between European and American roulette?
The European wheel has a single zero; the American wheel adds a double zero. That extra pocket nearly doubles the house edge, so European roulette returns about 97.3% to players over time while the American version returns less.
How many decks are used in online blackjack?
Most online blackjack games, especially live dealer tables, use eight decks dealt from a shoe. Some RNG versions use fewer, but eight is the standard you should expect when you sit down.
What is punto banco?
It is simply another name for the standard form of baccarat found in casinos worldwide. Punto means player and banco means banker, the two hands you can bet on. The rules and payouts are the same as regular baccarat.
How much should a beginner budget per session?
Set a fixed amount you can comfortably lose before you start, and a time limit too. Many gambling sites have tools that help you monitor both. Never chase losses with money you did not plan to spend.
Do I have to bet on player or banker, or can I bet both?
You can bet on either, both, or neither and just watch. All bets must be placed before the cards are dealt. Betting on both hands in the same round is allowed but rarely makes sense, since one bet usually offsets the other.
