Poker in Thailand

Poker in Thailand means online rooms such as Natural8 and WPT Global that accept Thai players, Thailand-only online tournaments with seats to live Asian Poker Tour events, and a 990 baht national championship with a 1,900,000 baht guarantee. Here is what exists, what it costs, and how it works.

Poker in Thailand has two faces. The first is online: rooms like Natural8 and WPT Global accept Thai players, run Texas Hold'em cash games and tournaments around the clock, and even host tournaments reserved for Thai nationals that award seats at live Asian Poker Tour events. The second is live tournament poker, which in August 2025 moved from a legal gray zone to being officially permitted under controlled conditions. This page covers both: what exists, what it costs, how the games work, and what to expect from accounts, payments and withdrawals.

For decades, poker for money sat in the same category as almost all gambling in Thailand, which is largely illegal outside a few exceptions such as horse racing and the national lottery, both of which require government authorization and run only in designated locations and under defined conditions7. Poker itself was banned until August 2025, when acting prime minister Phumtham Wechayachai signed an order legalizing poker games for money under controlled conditions, overturning a long-standing ban6.

The change came quickly and not without controversy. The order just happened to coincide with a poker tournament that went ahead a day after it was signed by Interior Minister Phumtham Wechayachai8. Opposition politicians questioned the suddenness of the reversal8. A full legal framework governing the new law has yet to be implemented, so the practical picture is still settling6. For players, the short version is this: tournament poker is now officially legal, cash games outside licensed settings remain off limits, and most day-to-day play happens online.

If you want the wider picture of what is and is not allowed, see gambling laws and penalties in Thailand.

Live tournaments and the Thailand Poker Championship

The headline live event for Thai players is the Thailand Poker Championship by N8TH, an online series that runs on Natural8. The main event has a buy-in of 990 baht and a guaranteed prize pool of 1,900,000 baht5. If 990 baht is more than you want to risk in one shot, there is a satellite ladder: a 200 baht Mega satellite that awards five seats to the main event, and a 20 baht step tournament that awards two tickets to the Mega satellite5. In other words, you can work your way from 20 baht to a shot at the 1,900,000 baht pool.

Beyond Thailand's own series, the live tournament circuit in Asia is anchored by the Asian Poker Tour. APT festivals are substantial affairs: the APT Taipei Poker Classic, for example, ran a USD 2 million Main Event guarantee across two venues, the CTP Asia Poker Arena, Asia's largest permanent poker room, and the CML, and offered pot-limit Omaha, No Limit Hold'em variations, mixed games and daily High Roller events9. Thai players reach these festivals either by buying in directly on site or by winning packages through the online exclusive tournaments described below.

For a fuller rundown of the tournament options open to Thai players, see poker tournaments for Thai players, which covers the series, satellites and live stops in more detail.

Thailand exclusive tournaments and APT packages

Natural8 runs "country exclusive" tournaments alongside APT festivals, and Thailand gets its own. These are small-buy-in online events with outsized prizes: seats at live APT Main Events plus travel and accommodation.

Here is what recent editions have offered:

EventBuy-inTop prizeCash prize pool
Thailand exclusive, APT Taipei Poker Classic฿1,000 (~USD 28)฿800,000 (~$22,117) in APT Taipei Main Event packages, places 1st to 6th฿125,000 (~$3,500)
APT Thailand Exclusive, APT Manila Classic฿850 (~$25)฿550,000 (~$15,940) in APT Manila Main Event packages, places 1st to 6th฿125,000 (~$3,623)
APT Thailand Exclusive, APT Jejulisted with the Jeju series฿765,000 in APT Jeju packages, places 1st to 6th฿125,000, part of a ฿890,000 total guarantee

Each APT Manila package includes an APT Manila Main Event seat worth ฿35,190 (~$1,035), plus transport and accommodation4. The Taipei edition was open only to Thai nationals born in Thailand, and the Jeju edition was strictly Thai nationals only3. So these events are for Thai citizens, not foreign visitors or expats. Comparable exclusives run for Taiwan and Hong Kong players, with 18 players across three countries winning packages at the Taipei edition3.

Playing online: Natural8 and WPT Global

Two rooms dominate the conversation for Thai players.

Natural8 is the Asian-facing poker room with the largest player pool in the region, covering Cambodia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam, and it showed more than 300,000 players online at the time of writing1. It runs a full schedule of tournaments with $200,000,000 in guaranteed prize pools monthly, and over $8,000,000 to be won each week in its Daily Guarantees alone1. The poker offering includes Texas Hold'em, pot-limit Omaha, All-in or Fold and Short Deck, alongside casino games like baccarat, roulette and blackjack1. The site is available in Thai, and the app runs on Windows, Mac, iOS and Android1. If you are not ready to deposit, there are free poker tournaments where you can win real money, and cash games with play money1. Natural8 has also hosted and sponsored events with APT, WSOP and Players Series1.

WPT Global is the online room of the World Poker Tour, a direct international real-money poker room available in over 135 countries2. Thailand is not on its excluded territories list, which does include places like Singapore, Hong Kong, China and the United States11. One rule worth knowing before you deposit: WPT Global requires you to wager your deposit at least once and generate rake or gross gaming revenue equivalent to at least 10 percent of your deposited amount before a withdrawal can be processed, and it may impose a 30 percent processing fee on withdrawals made before the full deposit amount is wagered11.

Both rooms allow playing at multiple tables simultaneously, limited only by the software you are using, whether desktop, mobile or browser12. Both prohibit bots and any artificial intelligence assistance, and WPT Global scans for such tools11.

Texas Hold'em: the game most tables play

Whatever room you choose, the game you will see most is Texas Hold'em, the world's most popular and most commonly played poker variant13. It works like this: each player is dealt two cards face down (your "hole cards") before the flop, and five community cards are dealt face up in the middle14. You make the best five-card hand from your two hole cards and the five community cards16. A table runs from two to ten players16.

Most online play, and nearly all tournament play, is No Limit Texas Hold'em, where you can bet all your chips at any time. Fixed Limit Hold'em, where bets are capped at fixed amounts, is more commonly found in live poker rooms in the United States and is rarely played online17. If you are new, hand rankings are the first thing to learn: from high card up through pairs, straights, flushes, full houses, four of a kind and the royal flush14. Natural8's free tournaments are a low-risk way to learn the flow before playing for real money1.

Accounts, verification and payments

Setting up an account is straightforward. On Natural8 you register with an email address, install the software, and verify your identity right after creating the account1. The minimum age is 18, and your age is checked during the account verification or KYC process; accounts that do not meet the age requirement are suspended1. WPT Global asks for a password of at least eight characters with uppercase letters, lowercase letters and numbers, and the registered name must match your legal name and the name on your funding method11. Both rooms allow only one account per person, and duplicate accounts can be closed with winnings forfeited15.

Accounts, verification and payments

Deposits on Natural8 go through the integrated cashier in the app, with no deposit fees, and the methods available vary by country, so check the in-app cashier to see what applies to you1. Asian-facing sites typically offer Thai players methods such as Help2Pay, Bitcoin, Wealth Pay and ViPAY, and many let you deposit and withdraw in Thai baht19. Bank transfers, e-wallets and credit or debit cards are also common at sites serving Thailand7. Natural8 does not accept cash sent to it, and if you send an invalid digital currency deposit, attempted recovery carries an 8 percent fee per transaction with no guarantee of success15.

Both rooms let you set your own deposit limits. Natural8 offers daily, weekly and monthly limits, and increasing a limit requires a 24 hour wait followed by confirmation15. Self-exclusion is also available: Natural8 offers temporary closure from one hour up to five years, or permanent, via the cashier panel or by email to support@natural8.com, with a 24 hour cooling-off period before reactivation15. WPT Global handles self-exclusion requests through customercare@wptglobal.com11.

Withdrawals: limits, timing and documents

This is where a little patience pays off. On Natural8, withdrawals are usually processed within 24 hours, though some cases take up to 72 hours15. There is a $1 fee on all withdrawals18, and you must satisfy sufficient poker or casino play based on your last deposit before withdrawing18. One quirk to know: winnings from the previous 72 hours are held in your poker wallet, usable at the tables but not withdrawable during that window12.

Natural8's withdrawal limits are USD 20,000 per day for prize withdrawals, with larger amounts requiring special management approval; large withdrawals may be split into smaller ones without extra fees15. Withdrawals generally go only to payment methods you have used for deposits before, a closed-loop rule, and your bank or payment processor may charge its own fees15. WPT Global's minimum withdrawal is five US dollars or the equivalent, and once verification is complete it aims to process withdrawals within 72 hours11.

Documents you may need for your first withdrawal on Natural8:

  • A current photo ID: passport copy, driving license or national ID card, showing your full name, photo and signature15
  • Proof of address: a utility bill, bank statement or credit card statement dated within three months, showing your full name and address as registered; card statements should have the eight middle digits blanked15
  • Documents may need to be notarized or certified by a qualified notary or solicitor on request15

If verification is required, you typically have 24 to 48 hours to complete it, otherwise the withdrawal is revoked and the funds return to your balance15. WPT Global gives you 30 days from a documentation request before the account may be restricted or the withdrawal canceled11. Withdrawals can also be canceled if documents are not provided, IDs have expired, or there are fraud, collusion or money laundering concerns15. Note that Thailand's own casino rules use facial recognition and face-to-face verification for identity checks, and foreigners entering a casino must present a passport or equivalent document20.

Finally, taxes: both rooms state that declaring and paying any tax on winnings is the player's sole responsibility15. For how Thailand taxes gambling winnings, see tax on gambling winnings in Thailand.
