Straight and Box: the two ways to win a digit lottery

Every digit lottery, whatever the country and whatever the local name, comes down to one choice: do you want your digits in the exact order they are drawn, or in any order?

A Straight bet wins only when your digits match the drawn number digit for digit, position for position. Pick 3-7-2 and the draw must be 3-7-2. Because the order requirement is strict, Straight bets are hard to win, and the prizes are the largest the game offers.

A Box bet wins when your digits match the drawn number in any order. Pick 1-2-3 and you win whether the draw comes out 123, 132, 213, 231, 312 or 321. Your odds of winning go up, and the prize goes down, because one Box entry effectively covers several Straight combinations at once5.

Japan's Numbers games state this plainly in their official rules: for a Straight win, "the chosen 4 digits and their order must both match the drawn number," while for a Box win "the chosen 4 digits must match regardless of order"6. The same split appears in the Philippines (Straight Play versus the Rambolito System), in China (direct selection versus group plays), in Malaysia (Standard versus Permutation) and in Singapore (Ordinary versus System Entry). The words change; the idea does not.

If you are new to how lottery draws and prize pools work in general, see how lotteries work.

How to play a 3-digit lottery (Numbers 3)

Japan's Numbers 3 is the cleanest example of the format. It is a number-selection lottery: you choose your favorite 3-digit number, from 000 to 999, and an entry type, which is Straight, Box or Set1. Each digit runs from 0 to 9, nothing is pre-assigned, and you may repeat digits, so 777 is a valid pick7. A Straight win pays about JPY 100,000, with a theoretical value of JPY 90,0001.

How to play a 3-digit lottery (Numbers 3)

The Philippines' 3D Lotto works the same way. You match three numbers from 0 to 9 in exact order for a Straight win, which pays a fixed PHP 4,5002. Recent draws show how it looks in practice: the September 24, 2026 2PM draw came up 3-2-0 and paid PHP 4,500 to winners8. If you do not want to commit to one order, the Rambolito System lets you play more flexible combinations2. The STL Swer3 game follows the same mechanics, matching three digits from 0 to 9 in exact order2. The Philippines also runs a 2D Lotto, where you select two numbers from 1 to 31 and match the winning combination in correct order, again with a Random Pick or Rambolito option2.

Malaysia's Special Cash Sweep 3D gives you several ways in. The basic 3D Standard entry asks you to select a 3-digit number within the range of 000 to 9999. If you would rather leave it to chance, 3D Lucky Pick has the system randomly generate a 3-digit number for you, and 3D Permutation has the system generate all possible orderings of your chosen digits, which is the local version of a Box9. The 3D Big prize numbers are drawn from the last 3 digits of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes of the 1+3D game, so the two games share a draw9.

Vietlott's Max 3D in Vietnam is a 3-digit game with an unusually rich draw. In its basic single-triple play, the draw is run 20 times per draw day, selecting 20 winning three-digit triples across 4 prize tiers3. You mark 3 digits, for example 1-2-3, on the left number board of the play slip, one entry per frame, or let the machine pick numbers for you by marking the lucky-pick box10. Prizes are quoted per 10,000 VND entry: the special prize, for matching either of the 2 special-prize triples in exact order, pays 1,000,000 VND; the first prize, for matching any of the 4 first-prize triples in exact order, pays 350,000 VND; the second pays 210,000 VND and the third 100,000 VND, all for exact-order matches3.

China's Welfare Lottery 3D (福彩3D) offers three entry types: direct selection (直选), group-3 (组选3) and group-6 (组选6)11. Direct selection means your bet numbers match the winning numbers in the same order12. The group plays are the Box equivalents, and we will come back to how they pay.

Thailand has been building toward the same format. Its N3 lottery uses a 3-digit number, each digit from 0 to 9, from 000 to 999, with no numbers pre-assigned7. The game was designed to be similar to the underground 2-digit and 3-digit lottery that Thai players already knew, as part of the government's plan to bring that play into the official system13.

How to play a 4-digit lottery (Numbers 4)

Japan's Numbers 4 is the 4-digit sibling of Numbers 3: you choose your favorite 4-digit number and an entry type, and the types are Straight, Box and Set6. A Straight win pays about JPY 1,000,000, with a theoretical value of JPY 900,0001. The step up from Numbers 3 is exactly what you would expect: one more digit means ten times as many possible numbers, and roughly ten times the prize for an exact match.

Singapore's 4D is the region's most developed 4-digit game, and it has a full page of its own at how 4D works. The basic entry types matter here because they mirror the Straight and Box split. A 4D Ordinary entry means you select 4 digits in a specific order, the Straight equivalent14. A 4D System Entry means you select four digits and place bets on all their permutations, the Box equivalent14. Draws are held on Wednesday, Saturday or Sunday, and you can also bet on six consecutive draws including the current one15. Each bet slip takes up to four number combinations of the same bet type15.

Malaysia's 1+3D runs on the same 4-digit base with eight ways to play: Standard (Big and Small), Lucky Pick, Permutation, Roll First, Roll Last, Perm Last 3, Perm Front 3 and i-CASH17. The Roll bets are a nice middle ground: with Roll Last you select the first 3 digits and the system rolls the last digit from 0 to 9, giving you ten 4-digit bets in one action; Roll First does the same from the front17. Lucky Pick has the system generate a random 4-digit number for you17.

The prize structure differs between the Big and Small versions. For 1+3D Big Bets, you can match against 23 sets of winning numbers: the 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes, plus 10 Starters and 10 Consolations. For 1+3D Small Bets, you can only match against the top 3 sets of winning numbers16. Small bets therefore pay more per win, because only the top prizes count.

Straight bets: odds and prizes

The odds in a digit lottery come straight from the number of possible outcomes. In a 3-digit game there are 1,000 possible numbers (000 to 999), so a Straight bet has a 1-in-1,000 chance. In a 4-digit game there are 10,000 possible numbers, so a Straight bet has a 1-in-10,000 chance. That is why the prizes differ by roughly a factor of ten.

The fixed payouts make this easy to see:

GameStraight matchStraight prize
Numbers 3 (Japan)3 digits, exact orderabout JPY 100,0001
Numbers 4 (Japan)4 digits, exact orderabout JPY 1,000,0001
3D Lotto (Philippines)3 digits, exact orderPHP 4,5002
Max 3D special prize (Vietnam)3 digits, exact order1,000,000 VND per 10,000 VND entry3
Max 3D first prize (Vietnam)3 digits, exact order350,000 VND per 10,000 VND entry3

Two things are worth noticing. First, Japan's prizes are described as "about" JPY 100,000 or JPY 1,000,000 because they are parimutuel-style: the actual amount varies with the prize pool and the number of winners, with the theoretical values of JPY 90,000 and JPY 900,000 as the baseline18. Second, Vietlott's payout is calculated per entry: the value you receive is the number of winning entries you hold, each worth 10,000 VND, multiplied by the prize value for that tier3. Buy the same number five times and a win pays five times.

For comparison outside Asia, Ontario's PICK-3 and PICK-4 show the same architecture. PICK-3 lets you play up to 5 sets of three numbers, each from 0 to 9, by Straight Play or Box Play19, and a PICK-4 Straight Play, matching all four numbers in the order drawn, wins up to $5,00019.

Box bets: combinations, odds and prizes

A Box bet is, underneath the name, a way of buying every ordering of your digits at once. The number of orderings depends on whether your digits repeat:

Box bets: combinations, odds and prizes
  • Three different digits (like 1-2-3): six orderings, so a Box entry covers six Straight combinations and your chance of winning is six times better than a Straight on the same digits.
  • Two digits the same (like 1-1-2): three orderings, so the Box covers three combinations.
  • All three the same (like 1-1-1): one ordering only, so a Box bet is identical to a Straight and there is nothing to box.

The same logic extends to 4-digit games: four different digits give 24 orderings, and repeated digits reduce the count.

China's 3D makes the payout difference explicit. The group-3 play (组选3) wins when your digits match the winning number in any order and any two of the digits are the same, and it pays CNY 3464. The official example spells it out: bet numbers 1 and 2, and you win if the drawn number is 112, 121, 122, 211, 212 or 221, collecting CNY 3464. The group-6 play covers three different digits and pays a different, typically smaller amount per entry because it covers more orderings11.

Vietlott offers the any-order option inside its combined play. In Max 3D's combined triple play, matching any of the 4 first-prize triples in any order pays 120,000 VND per 10,000 VND entry, and matching either of the 2 special-prize triples in any order pays 340,000 VND3. Compare those with the exact-order prizes of 350,000 VND and 1,000,000 VND for the same tiers, and you can see the any-order discount at work: roughly two-thirds less for a first-prize match, because a three-different-digit Box covers six orderings but the combined play's prize table prices in the repeat cases too3.

In Malaysia, the 3D Permutation entry has the system generate all possible orderings of your chosen 3-digit number, and the 1+3D Perm plays do the same for parts of a 4-digit number17. In Singapore, the System Entry does this for all permutations of your four digits14. In the Philippines, the Rambolito System is the any-order route2.

What the Box bet does not cover

A Box covers orderings, nothing else. Three things catch first-time players out.

Identical digits cannot be boxed. A number like 111 or 8888 has only one ordering. There is nothing for a Box to cover beyond the Straight itself, so these numbers are effectively Straight-only. If the drawn number is all identical digits, Straight bets on it win the full Straight prize, and Box bets gain nothing from the draw.

A Box does not cover near-misses. If you box 1-2-3 and the draw is 1-2-4, you lose. The Box forgives wrong order, not wrong digits. Every digit still has to match.

Some numbers cannot be played at all once they sell out. Singapore's 4D operates with sales limits: once a selected four-digit number combination has reached its sales limit, bets on it are no longer accepted15. A sold-out combination is marked on the ticket, and if you selected only a sold-out combination, no ticket is issued at all15. This protects the operator from overexposure on popular numbers, but it means your favorite number may simply be unavailable on a given draw day. Malaysia's games run on the same principle, which is why the operator publishes the mechanics of its number forecast games openly16.

Vietlott adds one twist in the opposite direction: in the Max 3D+ two-triples play, if you choose two identical triples, the prize value is twice the value shown in the prize table3. Duplicating a number is allowed there and is priced accordingly.

Set entries, slip formats and rollovers

Between Straight and Box sits the Set entry, which Japan's Numbers games define neatly: you put half your stake on Straight and half on Box, and you win if either half matches6. It is a hedge. If your digits come out in your exact order, the Straight half pays the Straight prize; if they come out scrambled, the Box half pays the Box prize. You cannot win both halves on one entry, but you double your routes to a payout.

China's 3D offers a similar spread of entries beyond the basic three: direct selection single, direct selection multiple, group-3 single, group-6 single, group selection and lucky number pick4. Direct selection multiple lets you cover more than one digit choice per position in a single entry, which is a cousin of the system bets described at lottery system bets.

Vietlott's play slip shows how the entries are physically organized. You mark 3 digits on the left number board for basic Max 3D, or 3 digits on both the left and right boards for the Max 3D+3D two-triples play, in each of four frames A, B, C and D; each frame corresponds to one printed entry, and marking the lucky-pick box in frame A or all frames lets the machine choose10.

The group plays in China also carry a rollover rule worth knowing: if no group-3 (Zuxuan 3) winner emerges in a draw, the special prize rolls into the next draw and is combined with that draw's special prize20. Each draw sets aside CNY 500,000 for the Zuxuan 3 special prize, shared equally among winning bets20. Thailand's N3 works similarly in spirit: it is a contributing prize type, and if a draw has no winner, the allocated prize money rolls over to the next draw for one draw only, after which unclaimed contributions go to state revenue7. For more on how carryovers work generally, see jackpot rollovers.

Where digit lotteries fit among Asia's number games

Digit lotteries are the small, fast end of the Asian lottery spectrum. Where a pick-6 lotto draws once or twice a week and offers jackpots that roll into the hundreds of millions, a digit game asks you to match just a few digits and pays fixed or near-fixed amounts you can plan around. Japan's Numbers games come in a 3-digit and a 4-digit version, with straight-play odds of 1 in 1,000 and 1 in 10,000 respectively8; Malaysia's Da Ma Cai 3D uses the numbers 000 to 999, and its Super 1+3D game uses 0000 to 999915.

They also sit closest to the street. Thailand's planned 3-digit game was explicitly designed to resemble the underground 2-digit and 3-digit lottery that players already used, bringing that demand into the licensed system13. The digit format is the same one that illegal operators copy by basing bets on official results, a pattern covered at illegal lotteries.

Within the licensed world, digit games fill a distinct niche:

  • Frequency: daily or multi-daily draws, the fastest of the traditional (non-instant) lotteries; only the fast-draw lotteries drawn every few minutes are quicker.
  • Prize size: fixed and modest. PHP 4,500, about JPY 100,000, up to about JPY 1,000,000 at the top of the format1. These are life-improving sums, not life-changing ones, which is the trade for the much better odds.
  • Skill surface: none in outcome, but real choice in entry type. Straight, Box, Set, Roll, Permutation and System entries let you set your own odds-to-prize balance before the draw, which is more bet structuring than a pre-printed ticket ever offers.
  • Odds: 1 in 1,000 for a 3-digit Straight, 1 in 10,000 for a 4-digit Straight, and six or twenty-four times better for a Box on all-different digits. For how these compare with every other game in the region, see lottery odds in Asia.

The digit games are also where the Box idea lives most purely. The same any-order concept appears across Asian gambling, from horse racing's boxed combinations to football toto's multi bets, but in the digit lottery it is the whole game: two bets, one number, and a simple choice between the big exact prize and the smaller forgiving one.

Common Questions

What is the difference between Straight and Box?

A Straight bet wins only if your digits match the drawn number in the exact order. A Box bet wins if your digits match in any order. Box is easier to win but pays less, because one Box entry covers several possible orderings of the same digits.

How much does a Straight win pay on Numbers 3 and Numbers 4?

In Japan, a Numbers 3 Straight win pays about JPY 100,000, with a theoretical value of JPY 90,000. A Numbers 4 Straight win pays about JPY 1,000,000, with a theoretical value of JPY 900,000. In the Philippines, 3D Lotto Straight Play pays a fixed PHP 4,500.

Why does a Box win pay less when digits repeat?

When two of your three digits are the same, fewer orderings of your number exist, so one Box entry covers fewer combinations. Fewer covered combinations means a higher chance of winning, so the prize per entry is lower. China's 3D group-3 prize, for example, is CNY 346.

Can I play a Box bet on 111 or 2222?

No. A Box bet only makes sense when your digits can be rearranged. A number like 111 or 2222 has only one possible ordering, so there is nothing extra for the Box to cover. Operators treat such numbers as Straight-only entries.

What happens if the drawn number is all identical digits, like 8888?

The draw is valid and Straight bets on 8888 win the full Straight prize. Box bets cannot win extra on such a draw because no rearrangement exists. In Vietlott's Max 3D+, choosing two identical triples doubles the prize value shown in the prize table.

How many combinations does a Box bet on 123 cover?

Six. The digits 1, 2 and 3 can be drawn as 123, 132, 213, 231, 312 or 321, and a single Box entry matches all of them. That is why a Box win pays roughly a sixth of the Straight prize on a three-digit game.

Which bet has better odds, Numbers 3 or Numbers 4?

Numbers 3. Matching three digits in exact order means beating 1,000 possible numbers, while a four-digit Straight must beat 10,000. That is why Numbers 4 pays about ten times more for a Straight win, around JPY 1,000,000 versus JPY 100,000.
