Is Gambling Help Confidential? Privacy, Records and Exclusion Lists

Gambling helplines and counseling are confidential, and you can often stay anonymous. Self-exclusion is different: it shares your details with the operators you exclude from, so it is not private.

What confidentiality means when you contact a gambling helpline

When you call a gambling helpline, the default is that what you say stays between you and the person on the line. Singapore's National Problem Gambling Helpline and WebChat states that all information shared will be kept confidential, and callers and users can choose to remain anonymous1. That means you can describe what is happening without giving your full name, your address or your employer's name, and still get practical help.

Australia's GambleAware helpline, reachable on 1800 858 858, is free of charge, available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and the conversation is confidential2. Family members can also book their own confidential sessions with a GambleAware counselor, so a partner or parent does not have to sit in on your call to get support2.

The practical upshot: if your main worry is that someone will find out you asked for help, a helpline is the lowest-risk place to start. You are not required to give identifying details to have a conversation about what you are dealing with.

Counseling services: what is kept confidential

Face-to-face and online counseling carries the same confidentiality promise as the phone lines. Problem gambling counseling and treatment centers in Hong Kong state that all information will be treated in strict confidence, and the same wording applies across their English and Chinese materials6. The Chinese-language version is blunter: callers' information is kept strictly confidential6.

Singapore's National Council on Problem Gambling runs counseling services alongside its exclusion schemes, so you can get support without applying for any ban at all7. Its wider support list includes:

  • counseling
  • self-exclusions and visit limits
  • family exclusions and visit limits
  • third party exclusions and visit limits
  • exclusions by law8

You choose which of those you want. Asking for counseling does not automatically put you on any exclusion list.

One practical wrinkle to plan around: Singapore's NCPG online booking for harm assessment and counseling appointments was unavailable from September 11, 2026 to October 10, 2026, with bookings taken by hotline instead. If you are trying to book in that window, call rather than relying on the website.

If you want to talk to someone in your own language, there are services across the region that handle English, Chinese and other languages, and you can read more about gambling help in your language.

Self-exclusion: what it is and who can apply

Self-exclusion is a formal ban you ask for yourself. On Malta-licensed gaming websites, it is defined as a tool which prevents players from gambling by blocking access to the gaming website the player has excluded with, for a definite or indefinite timeframe that the player can extend5. Anyone with an account can normally apply.

In Singapore, self-exclusion is a ban of a person from all casino premises, all gaming machine rooms, and all manner of general remote gambling, on voluntary application9. You can apply to be banned from any combination of those: casinos only, machine rooms only, remote gambling only, or all of it10.

Macau runs its own scheme through the gambling regulator, the DICJ. Applicants can choose whether or not to accept counseling from a problem gambling prevention institution, and can separately consent to the DICJ passing their personal data to that institution solely for counseling purposes4. Both are optional. The application form makes the same point: the person to be excluded has the right to choose whether or not to receive counseling from problem gambling prevention and treatment agencies11.

That separation matters. Self-exclusion and counseling are two different things, and you can take one without the other.

Where self-exclusion applies: casinos, machine rooms and remote gambling

Coverage varies a lot by place, and this is the part people most often get wrong. In Singapore, individuals may apply to exclude themselves from one or more of the following: casinos (Resorts World Sentosa and Marina Bay Sands), jackpot machine rooms at private clubs, and Singapore Pools online betting12. The step-by-step guide lists the same three blocks13.

Can you self-exclude?: Yes

A Singapore self-exclusion blocks you from casinos, Singapore Pools online betting, and jackpot machine rooms at private clubs13. If you only exclude from casinos, the machine rooms and the online account stay open, so decide deliberately which boxes you tick.

In Macau, applications can be submitted through any casino, but if you go that route the DICJ will verify your details and you must attend the DICJ office in person15. There are also responsible gaming information kiosks, though these only provide self-exclusion applications and nothing else16.

For a side-by-side view of how the region's schemes differ, see how to self-exclude from gambling in Asia.

How long self-exclusion lasts and whether it can be reversed

Durations and revocation rules are where schemes diverge most, so check the specific one you are signing up to before you apply.

How long self-exclusion lasts and whether it can be reversed

In Macau, the exclusion period is continuous and runs until it expires, unless you file a revocation request with the DICJ during the period4. Under the casino entry rules, a revocation of a self-exclusion prohibition takes effect only 30 days after the request is submitted17. A prohibition can also be renewed at the request of the interested party, or on confirmation of a new application by relatives17.

Singapore Pools exclusions stay in force until you apply to revoke them, and you can only apply to revoke after 12 months from the date of your application18. If you later become a private club member or betting account holder, you must first revoke your earlier self-exclusion and reapply18.

On Malta-licensed sites, if you want to shorten or remove a self-exclusion you must make your request to the operator in writing, detailing why the self-exclusion was imposed and how circumstances have changed19. For an indefinite self-exclusion, the account cannot be reopened until at least seven days from the day the request was accepted19.

Under Singapore's casino legislation, a person is subject to the self-exclusion they applied for until the Council revokes it20. There is one exception worth knowing if you are not a citizen or permanent resident: the Council may revoke without an application if the person is not a Singapore citizen or permanent resident and has remained outside Singapore for the prescribed minimum period20.

If you are weighing up whether to end an exclusion early, can you cancel a self-exclusion early walks through the revocation rules across schemes.

What happens to your account and money after you self-exclude

Your money is not taken from you. On Malta-licensed sites, during a self-exclusion players are prevented from gambling, but funds held on account are not forfeited and can still be withdrawn5. So you can log in or contact support to get your balance out, even though you cannot place a bet.

Operator practice varies. FortuneJack's policy is stricter: upon the commencement of the self-exclusion period, all funds remaining on the account are returned to the player, no balance may be maintained, and the user cannot access the account to withdraw funds during the period21. That operator also offers permanent self-exclusion if a player declares themselves a gambling addict, in which case access is permanently restricted and the account closed indefinitely with no reactivation under any circumstances21. A player who is not a gambling addict may later request reactivation, provided they are not a gambling addict21.

Bonuses and rewards stop because the gambling stops. During a self-exclusion, players are prevented from gambling5, so there is no activity to earn rewards on. If you are mid-way through a wagering requirement when you exclude, expect it to lapse rather than pause.

Applying online and through an organization

Most schemes let you apply online. Singapore's NCPG offers an online self-exclusion application, and a separate online application for a family exclusion order8. The application is free3.

Applying online and through an organization

Organizations can also apply on behalf of people connected to them. In Singapore, organizations with a Corppass account can facilitate group self-exclusion applications for their employees, members, or other individuals associated with the organization, and consent from each individual is mandatory12. That consent requirement is the safeguard: an employer cannot quietly add a staff member to a list without their agreement.

If you are applying for a private club jackpot room exclusion in Singapore, note the interim rule: from the date of application, do not enter or remain in the gambling area or take part in any gaming on the selected operators' premises18. The ban effectively starts when you apply, not when it is processed.

One caution on the paperwork itself: the Singapore Pools non-casino self-exclusion form states that legal action may be taken against the applicant if false information is given in the application18. Fill it in accurately.

Exclusion lists in India: no central register

India does not run a self-exclusion register you can join. Instead, the law takes a different approach: no person shall offer, aid, abet, induce or otherwise indulge or engage in the offering of an online money game and online money gaming service22. The same prohibition appears in the gazetted rules23. This applies irrespective of whether the game is based on skill, chance, or both22.

The practical consequence for someone looking for help is that there is no Indian equivalent of Singapore's NCPG list or Macau's DICJ scheme to sign up to. If you are in India and want to stop, the tools available to you are the ones that do not depend on a state register: helplines, counseling, blocking software and account-level self-exclusion with whichever operator you use. Common Questions

Is my call to a problem gambling helpline anonymous?

At Singapore's National Problem Gambling Helpline and WebChat, callers and users can choose to remain anonymous, and all information shared is kept confidential. Australia's GambleAware line is free, open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and conversations are confidential. You can talk without giving your full name.

Can my employer find out if I self-exclude?

Not from the scheme itself. Self-exclusion details go to the gambling operators you exclude from, not to employers. In Singapore, organizations with a Corppass account can apply for group self-exclusion for employees, but only with each person's consent, so that route is voluntary.

How do I cancel or shorten a self-exclusion order?

It depends on the scheme. Malta-licensed operators require a written request explaining why the exclusion was imposed and what has changed, and an indefinite exclusion cannot be lifted for at least seven days. Singapore Pools exclusions can only be revoked after 12 months. Macau revocations take effect 30 days after the request.

Can organizations apply for self-exclusion on behalf of employees?

Yes, in Singapore. Organizations with a Corppass account can facilitate group self-exclusion applications for their employees, members or other associated individuals. Consent from each individual is mandatory, so an employer cannot quietly add someone without their agreement.

What happens to my remaining balance after self-exclusion?

It is not confiscated. On Malta-licensed sites, funds held on account are not forfeited and can still be withdrawn during the exclusion. Some operators, such as FortuneJack, return all remaining funds at the start of the exclusion and close account access for the period.

Do I get bonuses or rewards while self-excluded?

No. During a self-exclusion, players are prevented from gambling, so there is nothing to earn bonuses on. The point of the tool is to block access to the gaming website you excluded with, for a set or open-ended period.

How do I self-exclude from an online casino account?

Use the operator's own self-exclusion tool, usually found in the responsible gambling or account settings section. It blocks your access to that site for a definite or indefinite period, which you can extend. For wider cover, check whether your country runs a central scheme.
