Buying Takarakuji online from abroad is not possible
This is the part people get wrong. The Takarakuji Official Site is built for people inside Japan, and it checks. If you are sitting in Bangkok, London or Seoul and try to log in and buy, the purchase will not go through. The official support pages say plainly that online purchase of Takarakuji from outside Japan is not possible1.
What surprises people is that it applies to members too. Even if you registered while living in Japan, even if you have bought online many times before, the rule still holds when you are overseas. The site states that purchase from overseas is not possible, including for eligible buyers who are temporarily abroad on travel2. So a two-week holiday does not create an exception. Neither does a business trip.
The same restriction shows up on the sports lottery side. The terms for the sports promotion lottery ticket say purchase from overseas is not permitted3. If you were hoping to keep a toto or BIG habit going from a hotel room abroad, that door is closed as well.
The practical upshot: if you want to buy Takarakuji online, you need to be in Japan when you do it. Plan your purchases around your travel dates rather than trying to buy from the airport or the destination.
What the Takarakuji Official Site offers members
The official site is not just a place to buy one game. Members can buy ordinary lottery tickets such as Jumbo Takarakuji, plus Loto, Bingo 5, Numbers and Quick One3. Quick One is worth noting because it is sold only on the official site, not at lottery booths6.

The site also carries the practical information you need before you buy: the features of each lottery, how to buy online, lottery booth information and the sales schedule7. If you are trying to work out whether a draw is open before you fly, that schedule page is where to look.
One thing you cannot buy there is scratch cards. The official support page says scratch cards cannot be purchased on the Takarakuji Official Site5. If scratch cards are what you want, you are looking at physical outlets.
Purchases are available 24 hours a day, in principle all year round8. That is the member experience when you are in Japan: no queue, no booth opening hours, no closing time.
Registration requirements: age 20, own-name payment and bank account
To buy on the site at all, you must be a registered member. The terms are explicit that non-members cannot purchase on the site9. Registration is not a formality you can skip.
The eligibility list is short and firm:
- Corporations cannot become members.
- People under 20 cannot become members.
- And people residing abroad cannot become members9.
The minimum age is stated again on the support side: purchases on the Takarakuji Official Site are open to customers aged 20 or over who have registered1.
The residency point matters for expats. Online purchase is limited to individual residents of Japan aged 20 or over2. So if you have moved out of Japan and given up residence, you are outside the eligible group, not just blocked by geography on the day.
Payment has to be in your own name. The site accepts credit card payment or carrier payment8, and you register your own payment method. You also register a prize receiving account, because winnings are transferred automatically to the account you registered8. That account needs to be yours.
If you are comparing this with other markets, the age and residency rules are not unusual. Our guide to buying official lottery tickets online in Asia sets out how other operators handle the same questions.
Credit card limit: JPY 100,000 a month
There is a monthly ceiling on credit card purchases, and it is changing. From October 29, 2026, the maximum monthly purchase by credit card on the Takarakuji Official Site drops from JPY 300,000 to JPY 100,0004. The cards affected are Life Card, Credit Saison and Orient Corporation4.
So if you were used to putting JPY 300,000 a month through your card, that stops on October 29, 2026. The new figure is JPY 100,000 a month4. Plan around the change if you buy in bulk or split tickets with other people.
This is a site-level limit, separate from any limit your card issuer applies. It also sits alongside the general spending-limit picture across the region, which our page on lottery spending limits covers in more detail.
How winnings are paid
Winnings on the official site are paid into the prize receiving account you registered, automatically8. You do not have to remember to claim, and there is no window to miss for the amounts handled this way.
The timing depends on the size of the prize. Prizes of JPY 10,000 or more are in principle transferred automatically to your registered account within about one week from the next business day after the draw date10. Prizes under JPY 10,000 are in principle reflected in My Page as held winnings on the next business day after the draw4. If your held winnings go over JPY 10,000, they are transferred to your registered account within about a week4.
For tickets bought at a lottery stand or convenience store rather than online, the route is different. Depending on the amount, Loto 7 winnings are collected at a lottery stand or at Mizuho Bank11. If you are holding a physical ticket, check where that particular prize tier is paid before you travel.
One number worth knowing if you are dreaming about a big win: a JPY 100 million Takarakuji prize, including Loto 7, is not subject to income tax or resident tax, so the winner keeps the full JPY 100 million12. The same applies to sports lottery payouts such as toto, BIG and MEGA BIG12. The JPY 78.17 million figure that sometimes circulates is the take-home from a JPY 100 million win in public racing, not in lottery.
Phishing emails and fake Instagram accounts to avoid
Because the official site holds your account details and your bank account, it is a target. The operator has confirmed many phishing emails that impersonate the Takarakuji Official Site and direct people to fake sites to steal account information4. The advice is straightforward: check the destination URL before you enter anything, and delete suspicious emails4.
There are also impersonation accounts on social media. Fake Instagram accounts imitating the official Takarakuji Lucky Ambassador account have been confirmed4. The genuine account is @takarakuji.ambassador; the fake one uses @takarakuji_ambassador4. The difference is a single character, which is exactly why it works.
The sports lottery side has the same problem. Fake Instagram accounts imitating the official sports lottery (toto and BIG) account have been confirmed, and users are told not to approve friend requests or follow them, and not to open URLs in suspicious direct messages13. The Japan Sport Council has also warned about fake winning-notification emails sent in its name, asking people not to open links or attachments, and noting that it never asks winners for personal or important information by winning-notification email14.
If you are traveling and your guard is down, this is when a fake message is most likely to catch you. A message that arrives while you are abroad, telling you that you have won and need to confirm your bank details, is the classic shape of the scam. Our page on lottery scams in Asia walks through the patterns.
What this means if you are a visitor, a resident or an expat
If you are a visitor to Japan, you cannot open a Takarakuji Official Site account, because membership requires residence in Japan and age 20 or over9. You can still buy physical tickets at lottery booths and convenience stores while you are in the country, subject to the same age rule.

If you are a foreign resident of Japan aged 20 or over, you can register and buy online, in your own name, with your own payment method and your own prize receiving account8. The overseas block applies to you the moment you leave the country, even on a short trip2.
If you are an expat who has left Japan, you are outside the eligible group for membership9. The online channel is not available to you, and buying from abroad is not possible1.
If you are in Japan and want to buy regularly, the site supports continuous purchase at a period and frequency you specify, and advance reservation of ordinary lottery tickets such as Jumbo before sales start8. That is the practical way to keep a routine going without logging in every week.
Quick reference

| Takarakuji online from abroad | No | Not available | 202 |
| Scratch cards | Not on the official site | Physical outlets | 205 |
| Sports lottery (toto, BIG) online from abroad | No | Not available | 193 |
| Horse racing betting tickets | Yes, with the right account type | JRA internet voting | 2016 |
The sports lottery age is 19, not 20, and purchase is prohibited for anyone under 1915. Horse racing betting tickets must not be purchased by or transferred to anyone under 2016, and the same age applies to buying or cashing JRA betting tickets17.
One more thing that has changed: the fun draw for losing tickets held every September 2, known as Takarakuji no Hi, ends after fiscal 20264. If you have been saving losing tickets for that draw, there is one more cycle and then it stops.
Common Questions
Can I buy Takarakuji online while on holiday overseas?
No. The Takarakuji Official Site does not accept online purchases from outside Japan. This applies even if you are a registered member who is only temporarily abroad on a trip. You need to be physically in Japan to buy online.
What payment methods does the Takarakuji Official Site accept?
You can pay by credit card or carrier payment. You can also use Takarakuji points and any prize money the site is already holding for you. Winnings are paid into the prize receiving account you register.
When are winnings under JPY 10,000 credited to My Page?
Prizes under JPY 10,000 are in principle reflected in My Page as held winnings on the next business day after the draw. If your held winnings go over JPY 10,000, they are transferred to your registered account within about a week.
Is it legal to buy foreign lotteries online from Japan?
Buying from overseas lottery operators while in Japan is not something the official Japanese lottery supports, and the Takarakuji site itself only sells to residents of Japan. Stick to official channels for the game you want to play.
Can I set up a subscription to buy lottery tickets regularly?
Yes, if you are a member. The site lets you set a continuous purchase period and frequency, and you can reserve ordinary lottery tickets such as Jumbo before sales open. This is a member feature, so you must be registered and in Japan.
