Online betting on esports is banned in Vietnam
Vietnam legalized sports betting in principle, treating it as a conditional business under state control, but that has never extended to esports or to any online channel5. The Ministry of Finance has not issued a license for betting business to any operator, and running a betting operation over the internet is expressly prohibited conduct4. In plain terms: there is no licensed Vietnamese esports book, online or offline, and there never has been.
The ban is not theoretical. The authorities state that all gambling and betting activity, including online, is punished under the law, and online gambling for locals is simply not allowed in the country6. Esports betting sits inside the same prohibition, because it is simply betting conducted over the internet on a competitive outcome.
For a player in Vietnam, the practical risk is that using an unlicensed online betting site is illegal, and the sites themselves operate from outside the country with no protection from Vietnamese law if something goes wrong. That is the whole legal picture in one sentence; the rest of this page is about what actually exists and how it works.
What the ban covers: e-football, sports betting and peer-to-peer wagering
The ban is broad, and it helps to see exactly where esports falls inside it.

E-football is excluded from licensed football betting. Vietnam's draft rules for international football betting say that only matches and tournaments organized by FIFA or a FIFA member body may be offered, and electronic football, along with competitions run by the Vietnam Football Federation, is explicitly excluded7. A separate trial of football betting confirmed the same line: only FIFA-organized fixtures qualify, while domestic fixtures and electronic football competitions are off-limits8. So even in the narrow world of licensed football betting, which does not yet operate anyway, betting on FIFA the video game or e-football tournaments would not be permitted.
Only three bet types are permitted at all, and none online. The recognized forms of betting in Vietnam are horse race betting, dog race betting and international football betting9. Even for those, the rules require betting tickets to be distributed through terminals or by telephone, and distribution via the internet or phone apps is prohibited10. The eligible match list for football is limited to fixtures with FIFA approval11.
Peer-to-peer wagering is banned too. Players at licensed electronic gaming venues are prohibited from using the results of those games to bet directly with each other12. That closes the side-betting route: you cannot legally run a private pool on game outcomes at a venue, and the same logic extends to online peer-to-peer wagering.
Lottery sales are offline only. Even state lottery products cannot be bought or sold over the internet under current regulations, which shows how consistently Vietnam keeps gambling off the online channel4.
The short version: esports betting is not a gray area that was forgotten. It is caught by the general prohibition on online betting, by the exclusion of electronic football from licensed betting, and by the ban on internet distribution of betting products.
Foreign players and overseas Vietnamese: rules that apply to you
If you are a foreign visitor or an overseas Vietnamese holding a foreign passport, your options inside Vietnam are different from those of local residents, but online esports betting is not among them for anyone.
What you may do:
- Play at licensed venues. Foreigners and overseas Vietnamese who enter Vietnam legally on a foreign-issued passport may play prize-winning electronic games at licensed recreation spots13. This rule dates back to the original 2003 regulation, which allowed only foreigners and overseas Vietnamese to participate and strictly prohibited everyone else14.
- Enter casinos. You need a valid passport or international travel document, lawful entry into Vietnam, and no bar from casinos15. Foreigners and overseas Vietnamese with foreign passports may also receive winnings and transfer or carry them abroad in foreign currency under Vietnam's foreign exchange rules.
- Take winnings out of the country. A player who wins in foreign currency may sell it to a licensed bank for Vietnamese dong, deposit it into a foreign currency account, or carry or transfer it abroad through a licensed bank16. Foreign winners are also allowed to buy foreign currency at licensed banks to move winnings abroad17.
- Buy lottery tickets. Vietlott games such as Keno are open to Vietnamese citizens, Vietnamese residing abroad, and legally immigrated foreigners in Vietnam18.
What you may not do: bet online on esports, football or anything else while you are in Vietnam. The prohibition on online betting applies to everyone in the country, and the licensed electronic games in hotels and casinos are for foreigners only, not for Vietnamese residents19. Where Vietnamese players go instead: offshore esports books
With no domestic option, Vietnamese esports bettors use offshore online sportsbooks. Independent tracking lists 751 casinos and betting sites that accept players from Vietnam, and the games on offer span slots, table games, live dealer games and full sportsbooks1. These sites are licensed abroad, take deposits in crypto or international payment methods, and are outside the reach of Vietnamese consumer protection.
A few examples of what is out there, drawn from the operators' own pages:
- LongFu88 runs a sportsbook covering football leagues including the EPL, Champions League and V.League 1, plus cricket, badminton, NBA, e-sports and more than 30 other markets20.
- Sportsbet.io uses a single account that works across sports betting, esports and casino games, and supports Bitcoin, Ethereum, Tether, Litecoin and Ripple alongside fiat options21.
- GG.BET is an esports-focused book covering the major titles, with odds shown in fractional, decimal and American formats22.
- V9Bet, an Asian bookmaker that has served the Vietnamese market for more than ten years, offers sports betting on football, basketball and esports, plus casino, slots and card games23.
- FB88 offers sports betting, live casino, lottery, card games, slots, P2P games and fish shooting games24.
The esports coverage on these books is genuinely deep. One major offshore sportsbook lists esports betting on Arena of Valor, Crossfire, CS2, Dota 2, eCricket, FIFA, King of Glory, League of Legends, Madden, Mobile Legends, NBA2K, Rainbow Six and Starcraft2. So whether you follow the VCS League of Legends scene, Dota 2's international circuit or CS2 events, the offshore market has it.
The trade-off is simple and worth saying once: these sites are illegal to use from Vietnam, they hold no Vietnamese license, and if a site withholds a payout there is no local authority to appeal to. For that reason, some players stick to sites with a long public track record, and it is worth reading up on betting scams in Vietnam before depositing anywhere.
Thunderpick: esports, sports and casino games in one account
Thunderpick is one of the offshore books commonly used from Asia, and its pitch is breadth: one account covers esports betting, sports betting and casino games3. The esports section advertises coverage and odds on matchups across the major titles, the sportsbook covers the usual leagues, and the casino side rounds it out.

Two features stand out for an esports bettor:
- Cash-out. Thunderpick offers a cash-out feature on sports betting, which lets you close a bet early and take a settled amount before the match finishes3. In esports, where a single team fight can swing a map, cash-out is genuinely useful: you can lock a profit when your team goes a map up, or cut a loss when the draft goes badly.
- Crypto-first operation. The site recommends crypto for a fast experience, with other payment methods also available3.
Thunderpick is not unique in the one-account model. Sportsbet.io runs the same structure, with a single account across sports, esports and casino21, and other books in the region, such as LongFu88, combine e-sports with 30-plus sports markets20. The practical benefit is that you do not need separate balances for an esports bet, a football bet and a few casino hands.
Thunderpick payments: crypto recommended, other methods available
Thunderpick's own guidance is to use crypto for the fastest experience, with other payment methods available as well3. That reflects how offshore betting payments work for players in Vietnam and Asia generally: bank cards and local transfers often fail or get blocked, so crypto has become the default route.
Here is what that looks like across comparable offshore books.
| Book | Cryptocurrencies and other payment options |
|---|---|
| Sportsbet.io | Bitcoin, Ethereum, Tether, Litecoin and Ripple, alongside fiat currency options21 |
| CoinPoker's sportsbook | Bitcoin, Ethereum, Tether and Solana, among other popular cryptocurrencies25 |
| SportsBetting | Bitcoin, Ethereum, Tether, USD Coin, Litecoin, Dogecoin, Cardano, Solana, Ripple, Tron, Shiba Inu and more, plus wire transfer, check and money order options for withdrawals26 |
Deposits are typically made from your own crypto wallet or exchange account to an address the site generates, and withdrawals go back the same way. The main things to get right are using the correct network for each coin and expecting network fees, which vary by coin and by how busy the chain is. If you are new to this side of it, our page on gambling payments in Vietnam covers the practical detail.
Bet types you will find: match odds, cash-out and crypto futures
Once you are looking at an offshore esports book, the markets follow a fairly standard pattern across the industry.

Match odds. The core market is the moneyline, a straight bet on which team wins the match or the map. Odds are usually shown in three formats: fractional, decimal and American22. Decimal odds are the most common in Asia, and the price tells you your total return per unit staked, stake included.
The main market families. Beyond the moneyline, the major esports markets are totals (over/under on kills, rounds or maps), spreads (handicap lines on rounds or maps) and prop bets27. Esports-specific props go deep: one crypto sportsbook offers map winners, first blood, total kills and more across every major title25. So on a single CS2 match you might bet the match winner, the map handicap, the total kills, and first blood, all on the same fixture.
Cash-out. As covered above, Thunderpick offers cash-out on sports betting3, and LongFu88 offers it on most single and combo bets, including partial cash-out where the market supports it20. Partial cash-out means settling part of your stake while leaving the rest running, which is handy when your team is ahead but the series is long.
Crypto futures. Some crypto betting sites, including casino and betting hybrids, offer a market called Crypto Futures, where you wager on the future price movement of popular coins such as Bitcoin, Ethereum and Litecoin28. It works like a sports bet on a coin going up or down over a set period, and it sits alongside the esports and sports markets on the same account. It is a price bet, not a game of skill, and it carries the volatility of crypto on top of the usual risk.
How deep the markets go. For a sense of scale, the draft rules for international football betting in Vietnam note that a single football match can carry around 10 to 15 different betting products, based on score predictions, yellow cards, red cards, corner kicks and the first goalscorer. Esports books work the same way, layering map bets, kill totals and props onto a single match.
Where to get support
If online betting has stopped being fun, or if money lost to an offshore site is causing stress, it is worth talking to someone rather than carrying it alone. Our gambling help in Vietnam page lists the support options available, and if you have been cheated by a site that took a deposit and vanished, the betting scams in Vietnam page explains what to look for and what your realistic options are.
Common Questions
Is esports betting legal in Vietnam?
No. Online betting of any kind, including esports, is prohibited in Vietnam, and no operator is licensed to offer it. Sports betting itself is a recognized conditional business, but only horse racing, dog racing and international football betting are permitted, and never over the internet.
Can foreigners bet on esports online while in Vietnam?
No. The ban on online betting applies to everyone physically in Vietnam, including foreign visitors and residents. Foreigners may play at licensed casinos and electronic gaming venues, but there is no licensed online esports betting option for anyone in the country.
What is e-football betting and why is it prohibited?
E-football means betting on simulated or electronic football matches and tournaments. Under the draft rules for international football betting, only matches organized by FIFA or its member bodies qualify, and electronic football competitions, including those run by the Vietnam Football Federation, are explicitly excluded.
Which cryptocurrencies does Thunderpick accept?
Thunderpick recommends crypto for the fastest experience but also supports other payment methods. Comparable offshore books accept Bitcoin, Ethereum, Tether, Solana and other major coins, so crypto deposits through a wallet or exchange are the standard route for players in Asia.
Does Thunderpick offer cash-out on bets?
Yes. Thunderpick has a cash-out feature on its sports betting, which lets you settle a bet early before the event finishes. Other offshore books used in the region offer cash-out on most single and combo bets, including partial cash-out where the market supports it.
What is Crypto Futures betting?
Crypto Futures is a market where you wager on the future price movement of popular cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Ethereum and Litecoin. It works like a sports bet on a coin going up or down, and it appears on offshore crypto betting sites alongside esports and sports markets.
Can overseas Vietnamese bet with each other on electronic games with prizes?
No. Players at licensed electronic gaming venues in Vietnam, including foreigners and overseas Vietnamese, are prohibited from using the results of those games to bet directly with each other. Peer-to-peer wagering on game outcomes is not permitted at these venues.
