What cricket betting markets cover

Cricket betting is not one market. It is a family of markets built around the three formats of the game: Test matches that run up to five days, one-day internationals, and T20 games that finish in about three hours. Each format produces its own set of bets, and the markets you see depend on which format is being played.

What cricket betting markets cover

At the broadest level, a licensed sportsbook offers betting on the match result, on how many runs are scored in a defined block of play, and on how individual players perform. The same operator may also run tournament bets that cover a whole series or World Cup rather than a single game7.

The range is wider than most casual bettors expect. A single T20 match can carry dozens of separate markets, from the winner to the number of sixes hit in the first six overs. The sections below walk through each family of bets and how it settles.

Match markets: winner, odds and the draw

The match result market is the simplest cricket bet. You pick which team wins. In a Test match, where a draw is a real outcome, you also have the option of backing the draw. In limited-overs cricket, a tie is possible but rare, and most operators handle it as a separate outcome or void the bet depending on their rules.

The match result bet takes a different shape depending on the format. In Test cricket it is a three-way market, because the draw is one of the possible outcomes. In limited-overs cricket it is a two-way market: you back one team or the other to win9. In cricket, "home" and "away" are often neutral venues, so the operator lists the two teams by name rather than by ground.

Odds are fixed when you place the bet. A fixed odds bet is one where you know, or can know, the amount you will win when you make it, apart from the result itself8. That means the odds on your ticket do not change even if the market moves after you bet.

Payout is straightforward. Your stake is multiplied by the fixed odds recorded when you placed the bet4. If you bet 1,000 at odds of 1.85 and your team wins, you collect 1,850, which includes your original stake. The profit is 850.

For a worked example using a real operator's figures, a football Correct Score bet of HKD 100 on a 2:1 home win at 7.50x pays HKD 750 including stake11. The same multiplication applies to any cricket match bet: stake times odds equals return.

Innings and session markets

Session and innings markets are where cricket betting differs most from other sports. A session is a defined block of play, usually a set number of overs. An innings market covers the total runs scored by one team across its whole innings.

A session runs bet asks you to pick whether the runs scored in that block will be over or under a line the operator sets. The line might be 60 runs for a ten-over block, or a different figure depending on the format and the teams. The bet settles on that block alone. A collapse in the next session does not affect it.

Innings totals work the same way but across the full innings. You back over or under a projected total, and the bet settles when the innings ends. These markets are popular because they stay live throughout the game and do not depend on the final result.

Split lines work the way they do in other sports. If a line is set at a half value, part of your stake goes on each side of the number. An in-play total goals example shows how this settles: with a line of [3/3.5], half of the stake goes to 3 and the other half to 3.5. A bet of HKD 1,000 on Over at odds 1.90 pays HKD 1,900 if the total is 4 or more, and HKD 500, with the stake returned, if the total is exactly 312. The same split-line logic applies to cricket session and innings totals.

In-play betting is available on these markets at many operators. Bets can be placed while the match is running, with odds updating ball by ball. Selling is suspended at key moments and resumes when play restarts13.

Player markets: top batsman, top bowler and performance bets

Player markets let you bet on individual performance rather than the team result. The two best known are top batsman and top bowler, but the range is wider.

Player markets: top batsman, top bowler and performance bets

Top batsman asks you to pick the player who scores the most runs in a match or a tournament. Top bowler asks you to pick the player who takes the most wickets. In tournament form, these become top run scorer and top wicket taker across the whole series.

The structure of these bets follows the pattern used for top goalscorer markets in football. Selections are usually a named player or "other player" for the field14. In football's equivalent, own goals are not counted when deciding the winner15. Cricket operators apply similar rules to define what counts, so read the specific market terms before betting.

Beyond top batsman and top bowler, operators offer:

  • Man of the match
  • Most sixes
  • Highest individual score
  • Next batsman out
  • Top run scorer across the series
  • Top wicket taker across the series

Availability varies by operator and format.

For in-play player markets, the operator designates which players are eligible. In football's next goalscorer market, designated players are those on the operator's betting list, and the list changes with substitutions, so it should be checked before betting12. Cricket operators apply the same principle to next batsman out and similar markets.

Toss and other short markets

The toss is the shortest market in cricket. It opens before the coin is flipped and closes the moment the result is known. Some operators offer it, others do not, and where it is offered the window to bet is often just a few minutes.

Because the toss is a coin flip, the odds are close to even. The operator's margin is built into the price, so you might see odds of 1.90 on either side rather than 2.00. That margin is how the bookmaker makes its money on a market with no skill element.

Other short markets include the number of runs in the first over, whether a wicket falls in the powerplay, and the method of the first dismissal. These settle quickly and are popular with in-play bettors who want fast results.

Minimum stakes on short markets vary by market and operator:

Market typeMinimum stakeWhere
Some Philippine bet typesP 2.00Philippines2
Other Philippine bet typesP 5.00Philippines2
Several pool bet typesS$2Singapore16
Toto entryJPY 100Japan3

Check the operator's rules for the specific market you want.

How odds are set: an India vs Australia example

Odds reflect the operator's assessment of how likely each outcome is, plus a margin. The margin is the gap between the true probability and the price you are offered, and it is how the bookmaker profits over time.

How odds are set: an India vs Australia example

Take a hypothetical India vs Australia T20. If the operator prices India at 1.85 and Australia at 2.10, the implied probabilities are roughly 54 percent and 48 percent. Those add up to more than 100 percent, and the excess is the margin. You can see the same structure in any fixed odds market4.

Payout on a winning bet is stake times odds:

BetStakeOddsReturn including stakeProfit
India to win1,0001.851,850850
Australia to win1,0002.102,1001,100

The higher odds reflect the lower probability the operator assigns to that outcome.

For a real operator example, a football Correct Score bet of HKD 100 on a 2:1 home win at 7.50x pays HKD 750 including stake11. A football Correct Score bet of HKD 100 on an away win at 9.00x pays HKD 90011. The multiplication is the same regardless of the sport: stake times odds equals return.

Odds move as money comes in and as the match situation changes. In-play odds update ball by ball. The odds on your ticket are locked when you place the bet, so later movements do not affect your payout4.

Cricket betting rules vary widely across Asia, and the position depends on whether you are a citizen, a resident or a visitor.

In Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Jockey Club operates fixed odds betting under a legal framework, and its rules cover match result, correct score and in-play markets9. In Singapore, Singapore Pools runs toto and other pool bets, with online and slip-based channels17. In Japan, toto and mini toto are operated under a legal framework, with single bets at JPY 1003. In South Korea, Sports Toto operates under a legal framework with specific game types20. In the Philippines, PAGCOR accredits gaming system administrators and registered brands, and some operators offer sports betting22. In Macau, sports lottery betting is regulated, with live bet types including Asian handicap and over/under23. In China, the sports lottery offers football betting with combinable markets19.

In Vietnam, a pilot scheme for football betting was proposed, with expansion to other sports to be considered later6. That means cricket betting is not currently part of the pilot.

Playing on offshore casino websites is illegal in some jurisdictions, and players have been prosecuted. Cloudbet, for example, does not accept registration from countries that prohibit cryptocurrency online betting, gambling or skill games5. If you are a visitor or expat, check the rules where you are before opening an account, because the position for visitors can differ from that for citizens.

Common Questions

What does a session runs bet mean?

A session runs bet is a wager on how many runs are scored during one defined block of play, usually a set number of overs. You pick over or under a line the operator sets. It settles on that block alone, so a strong finish later in the innings does not change the result.

Which cricket bet types can I place on a single match?

On one match you can usually bet on the winner, the draw in Test cricket, innings and session totals, top batsman, top bowler, and short markets like the toss. Operators also offer tournament bets such as champion, group winner and top scorer across a whole series.

What do odds of 1.85 on India to win pay?

Decimal odds of 1.85 pay your stake multiplied by 1.85. A bet of 1,000 returns 1,850 including your stake, so the profit is 850. The same multiplication applies to any fixed odds bet: stake times the odds shown when you placed it.

Is betting on the toss allowed?

Some operators offer toss markets, but they are short-lived and often restricted. Where they are offered, the market closes as soon as the coin is flipped. Check the operator's rules before betting, because not every sportsbook carries a toss market.

Can I lay bets on cricket matches?

Laying a bet means acting as the bookmaker and betting against an outcome. This is only possible on betting exchanges, not at standard sportsbooks. Exchanges operate in some markets and are restricted or blocked in others, so availability depends on where you are.

Which operators sponsor national cricket teams?

Several betting brands sponsor national teams. Dafabet signed a three-year deal as Cricket South Africa's official Team Associate Sponsor for the men's and women's teams. In India, Dream11 held the Team India jersey sponsorship from July 2023 to March 2026.

What player markets are available besides top batsman and top bowler?

Beyond top batsman and top bowler, operators offer man of the match, most sixes, highest individual score and next batsman out. Tournament-level player bets include top run scorer and top wicket taker across the whole series. Availability varies by operator and format.
