When HKJC Multi-Leg Bets Are Refunded for Insufficient Runners

If a horse is scratched from one leg of an HKJC multi-leg bet, only the portion of your stake tied to that horse is refunded. The rest of the bet stands. Here is how it works, what it pays, and when the money arrives.

Which bet types qualify for a refund

The refund rule for scratched runners applies across HKJC horse racing pools, but how it works depends on whether you are betting a single race or combining races.

In a single race pool, if a horse you selected is scratched, your bet on that horse is refunded. That covers Win, Place, Quinella, Quinella Place, and similar single-race bets. The refund is straightforward: your stake comes back1.

In a multiple bet, the picture changes. A multiple bet combines selections from two or more races. If a horse is scratched in one leg, only the portion of your stake that relates to the scratched horse is refunded. The remaining legs stay live and are settled on their own results2. This is the key difference from a single race pool, where the whole bet on that horse is refunded.

Once a scratching is announced, no bets involving the scratched horse will be accepted, including up to the next leg of multiple leg combinations1. So if you are building a multi-leg bet and a horse is scratched before you place it, you cannot include that horse. If the scratching happens after you have placed the bet, the refund rule applies.

For overseas races that are commingled into HKJC pools, the same principle holds. In a single race pool, bets involving a withdrawal are refunded. For multiple bets, a refund is made only in respect of bets involving the withdrawal, and the remaining bets stand1.

If an entire overseas race is declared void, all bets are refunded in full, even if the overseas stewards order the race to be re-run1. A rerun of a dead heat is treated as a separate race and does not affect the original race's declared dividends1.

If an overseas race or its official result is delayed for any reason, the operator may cancel betting on that race and refund all bets in full1. This is a separate situation from a scratching, but it also results in a full refund.

The operator may also terminate any bet type of any commingled pool at any time without giving a reason, refund bets, or hold accepted bets as an independent pool2. This is a discretionary power, not something you can request.

For football bets, the refund rules are different depending on the situation:

SituationWhat happens to the bet
A match is declared voidSingle bets are refunded and affected accumulator legs are treated as successful at odds of one4
Any individual leg is refunded in a Same Game All UpThe entire bet selection is refunded5
A team is withdrawn from any relevant tournament, in Tournament Bets involving more than one tournamentAll unresolved Tournament Bets involving that team are refunded6

How the refund is calculated

The refund amount for a scratched runner in a multiple bet is not the full stake. It is the portion of your stake that relates to the scratched horse.

How the refund is calculated

Think of it this way. If you placed a double with two HKD 100 legs, and one horse is scratched, you get back the HKD 100 tied to that leg. The other HKD 100 remains at risk on the surviving leg. If that leg wins, you are paid at the odds for that single leg, not the combined double odds.

For pari-mutuel bets with flexible or partial bet units involving a single race pool that qualifies for a refund, the payout is made in multiples of 10 cents, rounded to the nearest 10 cents up or down7. For standard betting tickets eligible for a dividend, refund, or rebate, payment is made in multiples of 50 cents, rounded up or down to the nearest 50 cents8.

The operator may revise a payout found to contain an error or miscalculation after publication. If you have not yet claimed, you receive the revised payout. If you have already claimed, you may claim the difference, subject to the rules9.

If a bet fails to be recorded due to facility interference or failure, or a valid bet becomes unidentifiable due to later failure or damage, the operator's liability is limited to a refund of the stake collected9.

For football bets, the calculation works differently. In an in-play goal line bet with a line of [3/3.5], a bet of HKD 1,000 on over at odds 1.90 pays HKD 1,900 if total goals are 4 or more, and HKD 500 if total goals are 3, because half the stake is placed on8 and half on [3.5]10. In a handicap example, Barcelona[-1/-1.5] vs Real Madrid[+1/+1.5] at odds 2.00, a bet of HKD 200 on Barcelona with a 1:0 win results in half the stake losing and half refunded, returning HKD 10010.

These examples show how partial refunds work in practice: when a line splits your stake across two outcomes, one half can be refunded while the other half is settled.

How and when refunds are paid

How you get your refund depends on how you placed the bet.

If you bet online or by telephone, refunds are credited to your account. For UMACA and telephone or internet betting, refunds are made promptly on race result or cancellation, UMACA balances are adjustable, and telephone or internet betting amounts are added to the betting limit11. This means the refund is available for you to bet again or withdraw, depending on the account type.

If you hold a physical betting ticket, you must present it for payment. Winning tickets or claims for refunds must be presented at a betting location on any betting day within 60 days after the betting day on which the relevant match, or the last match in the case of an All Up Football Bet, was held3. For horse racing, the same 60-day window applies to revised payouts and rebates: if you do not claim within 60 days from the date of the race meeting, unclaimed revised payouts or rebates are forfeited7.

If your ticket is lost, defaced, or damaged, you must request identification, and the deadline depends on the situation:

  • If your ticket is lost, you must request identification within 7 days after the betting day on which the relevant match was held3.
  • If your ticket is defaced, you must request identification within 60 days after the betting day3.
  • For damaged tickets, the request must be made within 60 days of the betting day on which the match was held9.

If a physical betting ticket is declared void, a notice must be posted for at least 24 hours from the time of announcement at the operator's headquarters and/or the betting location where the ticket was sold9.

For football bets, winnings or refunds not claimed within 60 days are forfeited9. The claim must be made at any betting location within 60 days of the betting day on which the match, or the last match of a parlay, was held9.

You cannot withdraw a valid football bet9. Once placed, the bet stands unless a void or refund rule applies.

For JRA bets in Japan, refunds for UMACA and telephone or internet betting are made promptly on race result or cancellation11. This is a different jurisdiction, but it shows the contrast: account-based refunds are typically faster than ticket-based claims.

What happens if a race is abandoned

If an overseas race is declared void, all bets are refunded in full, even if the overseas stewards order the race to be re-run1. This is a full refund, not a partial one.

What happens if a race is abandoned

If an overseas race or its official result is delayed for any reason, the operator may cancel betting on the race and refund all bets in full1. This covers situations where a race cannot be run or the result cannot be confirmed within a reasonable time.

For football, if a match is declared void, all bets on that match are declared void and stakes are refunded, unless the result was already determined, a payout suggestion was accepted, or the operator decides otherwise9. In a parlay, a void match counts as one successful leg at odds of 1.004. This means the rest of your parlay stays live, but the void leg does not add to your odds.

If all nominated matches in a Multi-Match HaFu are void, any jackpot allocated is credited back to the jackpot pool and all Multi-Match HaFu bets are refunded12.

For Tournament Bets, if one or more tournaments are canceled or terminated, all unsettled Tournament Bets on that tournament are refunded13. If a team withdraws before playing any match in a single-tournament bet, all Tournament Bets containing that team are refunded. If a team withdraws after playing, those bets are treated as losses. For multi-tournament bets, withdrawal from any tournament results in a refund13.

For boat racing in Korea, if five or more boats start normally but no boat crosses the finish line, all bet types are refunded8. For a non-starting boat, betting tickets on that boat are refunded in full, and the ticket is needed to claim the refund14.

What to bring and where to collect

If you are collecting a refund on a physical ticket, bring the ticket itself. Do not fold it: physical betting tickets must not be folded9. If the ticket is damaged or defaced, you may need to request identification, which has its own deadline.

You can collect at any HKJC betting location, including off-course betting branches, on any betting day within 60 days9. The same 60-day window applies whether you are collecting a dividend or a refund.

For online and telephone account holders, no action is needed. The refund is credited to your account automatically. You can then use the balance for future bets or withdraw it according to your account terms.

If you are under 18, your bets may be declared void and any dividend or refund forfeited9. This applies to football bets, and the same age restriction applies across HKJC betting.

The operator may also refuse money for a bet, cancel acceptance of a bet, or order any person to leave the betting location, without giving any reason9. This is a discretionary power held by the supervisor of a betting location.

For visitors to Hong Kong, the same rules apply as for residents when collecting refunds on physical tickets. You need to present the ticket at a betting location within the 60-day window. If you bet online, the refund goes to your account, but you may need to verify your identity to withdraw.

For foreign residents, the process is the same as for citizens. The 60-day deadline and the 7-day lost ticket deadline apply regardless of residency status.

Common Questions

What happens to a multi-leg bet if a runner is scratched in one leg?

Only the portion of your stake that involves the scratched horse is refunded. The remaining legs stay live and are settled normally. If you had a double with one scratched runner, you get back the part of the stake tied to that runner, and the rest of the bet continues.

Do I need to claim my refund or is it automatic?

For online and telephone accounts, refunds are credited automatically. If you hold a physical betting ticket, you must present it for payment at a betting location within 60 days of the betting day. Unclaimed refunds are forfeited after that deadline.

How long does an HKJC refund take to appear in my account?

Account-based refunds are typically credited once the scratching is confirmed and the pool is recalculated, usually on the same race day. Physical ticket refunds must be collected within 60 days. There is no fixed processing time published beyond that window.

Is a refund the same as a void bet?

No. A refund returns your stake for the affected portion. A void bet means the entire bet is canceled and the full stake returned. In multi-leg bets, a scratched runner triggers a partial refund, while a void race or void match refunds the whole bet.

What is a field size rule and when does it apply?

A field size rule sets the minimum number of runners needed for certain bet types to stand. If the field drops below that number after scratchings, affected bets may be refunded. The exact threshold depends on the pool and bet type.

Are refunds available at off-course betting branches as well as online?

Yes. You can collect refunds on physical tickets at any HKJC betting location, including off-course betting branches, on any betting day within 60 days. Online and telephone account holders receive refunds directly in their accounts.

Does a refund apply if a race is abandoned?

Yes. If an overseas race is declared void, all bets are refunded in full, even if stewards order a rerun. If a race is delayed and the operator cancels betting on it, all bets in that race are also refunded in full.
