Slot Machines in Vietnam

Vietnam has around 60 licensed electronic gaming clubs in five-star hotels, plus slot floors at its 9 casinos, open to foreign passport holders. Here is where they are, how they work, and how the Hoiana Slots League tournament plays out.

What a slot club in Vietnam is

A slot club in Vietnam is what the law calls a "prize-winning electronic games" venue: a room of slot machines, electronic roulette and similar machines, licensed to operate inside a hotel and open only to foreign passport holders2. The rules require these clubs to sit inside five-star rated luxury hotels, which is why you will find them in the basements and ground floors of big city hotels rather than in standalone buildings4.

The format is closer to a private gaming salon than to a Las Vegas casino floor. Expect a compact room, a few dozen machines, a cashier desk where you exchange money for credits, and staff who check passports at the door. Some clubs are small enough that you will have the place largely to yourself on a weeknight; the bigger casino resorts, like Hoiana near Hoi An, run full slot floors with hundreds of machines5.

The games themselves are the same machines you would see anywhere in the world: reel slots, video slots, electronic table games and linked progressive jackpots. What makes Vietnam unusual is not the machines but the door policy, which we cover under who can play below.

Where slot machines are

Slot machines in Vietnam sit in two kinds of place: the country's 9 licensed full casinos, and the roughly 60 smaller e-gaming clubs licensed in hotels1. The casinos are the big resort destinations, and the hotel clubs are scattered through Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Nha Trang, Ha Long and other tourist centers.

A few examples of what is out there:

Opening hours vary by venue: some hotel gaming clubs stay open around the clock, while others follow the hotel's quieter rhythm, so if you are making a special trip for a particular club, it is worth confirming hours with the hotel before you go. Who can play

The short answer: foreign visitors and overseas Vietnamese. The rules permit foreigners, and Vietnamese people who reside abroad, who legally enter Vietnam using passports or international travel documents granted by foreign authorities, with valid visas and full civil act capacity under Vietnamese law9. In practice, that means you show a foreign passport at the door.

Vietnamese citizens cannot play at slot clubs or most casinos. The only exception is the pilot scheme at designated casinos, such as Corona Casino on Phu Quoc island, where citizens who meet age and income conditions may enter10. We cover that scheme, and its entry fees, in the section on Vietnamese citizens below.

Players also have obligations once inside: you must carry documents proving you are eligible to play, follow the game rules and house rules, meet your tax obligations, and not use game results for direct betting with other players11.

Entry: what to bring and what to expect

Bring your original passport. Photocopies are not accepted at any casino in Vietnam, and photography on the gaming floor is prohibited, so plan to leave your camera in your room1. Foreign visitors need a valid passport or international travel document and lawful entry into Vietnam12.

At the door, expect a passport check and sometimes a membership registration at the reception desk. There is no entry fee for foreigners at the licensed casinos1. Security may ask you to deposit video cameras, cameras and sound recorders before entering, and venues can refuse entry to people who are drunk2.

Dress codes are rarely formal at the hotel clubs, but smart casual is the safe choice at the resort casinos in the evening. If you are visiting a casino for the first time and want a walkthrough of the whole process, from the door to the cashier, our first casino visit guide for Vietnam covers it step by step.

King Club at the Pullman Hanoi

King Club is the best known slot club in Hanoi, and its recent history explains a lot about how these venues work in Vietnam. The club sits on the first floor of the Pullman Hanoi Hotel at 40 Cát Linh Street, and it was legally licensed to operate prize-winning electronic games for foreigners only7. The gaming operation belongs to Viet Hai Dang Company13.

For a foreign visitor, the practical takeaway is simple: the club is a licensed venue where you can play legally with your passport. For Vietnamese citizens, the case is a reminder that playing at a foreigners-only club, even one that quietly lets you in, carries real legal risk.

How slot machines work

Slot machines are games of chance built around a random number generator. Each spin's outcome is determined the moment you press the button, and the reels or video display simply show you the result. Most slot play is purely luck14.

Not all machines are the same, and it helps to know the difference before you sit down. Some machines pay out more frequently but in smaller amounts, with lots of small wins and bonus games along the way. Others pay less often but with bigger prizes when they do hit. Neither type is "better"; it is a question of what kind of ride you want14.

A few machines include a bonus game with an arcade-style element, where you make choices that influence the outcome. Even there, the random number generator usually determines whether you get to play the bonus round and how much money is available to win, so luck remains the dominant factor14.

At Vietnamese venues you will typically buy credits at the cashier desk or load them onto a player card, choose your bet per spin, and cash out remaining credits when you finish. Machine minimums and maximums vary by venue and by machine, so check the machine's own display before you play.

Money and payouts

Winnings at licensed venues are confirmed and paid in full by the operator; that is your right as a player, and you may also file complaints or lawsuits over payouts and report fraud11.

For foreign players, the money side is straightforward at the door but worth understanding at the exit. If you receive a cash prize in foreign currency, you may sell the foreign currency to a licensed bank for Vietnamese dong, transfer the cash abroad through a licensed bank, carry it abroad with the bank's confirmation, or deposit it into your foreign currency payment account at a licensed bank15. In short, you can legally take your winnings out of the country, but through proper banking channels rather than in a suitcase of cash.

Vietnamese players at the pilot casinos work in dong: only VND may be used to buy gaming chips, and winnings or unspent chips are exchanged back into VND12. Casino winnings are taxable income in Vietnam, and the tax treatment of prizes is covered in detail on our tax on gambling winnings page.

The Hoiana Slots League

The Hoiana Slots League is the country's flagship slot tournament, run at Hoiana Resort & Casino on the central coast, a property with 140 gaming tables and more than 300 slot machines5. The season runs from December 2025 to November 2026, and it ends with a Grand Finale on December 18 and December 19, 2026, where players compete for a share of a USD 50,000 prize pool3.

How you qualify. The tournament is open to Hoiana Rewards Card members, excluding the non-gaming card tiers. In practice that means any foreigner or overseas Vietnamese citizen with a foreign passport issued by a foreign authority, a valid laissez-passer and lawful entry into Vietnam. Employees of Hoiana, its advertising agencies and anyone directly involved in organizing the tournament are not eligible3.

From December 2025 to November 2026, earn 3,000 points within a calendar month and you earn 1 entry ticket, with a maximum of 5 tickets per patron across the qualifying period. On the tournament days themselves, earning 1,500 points gets you an additional entry, up to a maximum of 2 additional entries. In total, each player can hold up to 7 entries throughout the tournament3.

How the finale plays out. Each session has a playing time of 2 minutes, so this is fast, score-based play rather than a long grind. The structure runs in stages:

  • Preliminary Stage: the top 30 participants advance to the Semi-Finals. The cut-off time to join the line for the Preliminary Round is 9:50 PM on Day 1 (December 18) and 5:50 PM on Day 2 (December 19).
  • Wild Card Draw: only for participants who joined the Preliminaries but did not advance. It commences at 6:30 PM, and drawn players advance into the Semi-Finals. If a drawn participant fails to acknowledge the result after their name and patron ID is announced 3 times at the Mot Hai Bar stage, that result is individually redrawn.
  • Semi-Finals: the cut-off time to join the line is 6:50 PM. The top 10 leaderboard semi-finalists advance to the Finals3.

If you hold multiple entries, only your highest score played counts; in case of multiple entries, the highest score played shall prevail3.

Registration. On the day of the event, the Registration Counter opens 2 hours before the first session begins, so arrive early if you want a comfortable margin3.

Prizes. The USD 50,000 pool breaks down as follows:

PlacePrize
ChampionUSD 25,000
2nd placeUSD 10,000
3rd placeUSD 5,000
4th to 6th placeUSD 2,000 each
7th to 10th placeUSD 1,000 each

All prizes are issued in the form of non-negotiable Slots Bonus Credits, and those credits expire 30 days after the issuance date, so a win needs to be played through within a month3.

Machine problems. If a tournament slot machine shows a TILT or error during your session, you may choose either to retain your current score or to replay that slots round once3.

Vietnamese citizens and slots

For Vietnamese citizens, the rule is blunt: slot clubs and most casinos are off limits. Gambling at casinos is open to foreigners, and to Vietnamese nationals only through the pilot scheme at designated casinos, while citizens are prohibited from gambling on electronic machines at hotel clubs13. The King Club case showed what happens when that line is crossed.

The exception is the pilot scheme at designated casinos, such as Corona Casino Phu Quoc. To enter, Vietnamese nationals must be at least 21 years old with full civil act capacity, prove financial capacity, buy an entry ticket, not be subject to a self-requested or family-requested bar, and use only Vietnamese dong16. The financial test means proving regular income of VND 10 million per month or more, or being subject to personal income tax from bracket 3 or higher17.

The entry ticket costs VND 1,000,000 for 24 continuous hours of play, or VND 25,000,000 for a monthly pass18. You will need a valid citizen identity card (the căn cước công dân, since old ID cards are no longer accepted) and income documents to register for membership at the casino reception19. Citizens who committed certain crimes abroad, including sentences over three years, will not be admitted20.

Other ways to play

If slots are not your game, or you want alternatives while in Vietnam, there are several legal options depending on who you are.

The 9 licensed casinos offer full table game floors alongside their slot machines, from baccarat to roulette, all open to foreign passport holders1. Our guides to baccarat in Vietnam and casino table games in Vietnam cover what is on the tables and how the games run.

Poker is legal in Vietnam only in tournament format, organized under the sport's official rules, with players paying a buy-in used for organizing costs and prizes. Poker clubs exist in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and most provinces, with buy-ins ranging from a few hundred thousand dong to a few tens of millions of dong21. The scene has had its wobbles: the Asian Poker Tour canceled the last two days of its Hanoi Billions series in December 2023 amid allegations the series breached local gambling laws, a reminder to stick to properly licensed events22. See our pages on poker in Vietnam and poker tournaments in Vietnam.

For Vietnamese citizens, the everyday legal options are the lotteries: Vietlott's Keno, Mega 6/45 and Max 3D draws, and the traditional provincial Xo So Kien Thiet tickets, all covered in our Vietnam lottery guide. Online gambling from within Vietnam sits in a different and murkier category, covered on our online gambling in Vietnam page.
