Teen Patti

Teen Patti is India's classic three-card game: everyone gets three cards, and the highest hand takes the pot. Here is how the hands rank, how blind and seen betting works, where to play it live, and what the law says.

Teen Patti means "three cards" in Hindi, and that is the whole game in a name. Everyone at the table gets three cards, and the aim is to hold the highest-ranking combination when the betting is done. It is one of the most popular card games in India, played at family gatherings during festivals like Diwali, at dedicated tables in casinos, and on phone screens across the country. Casinos often list it as Indian Flush or Teen Patti, and it plays like a cousin of Three Card Poker, with a betting twist all its own: you can choose to play blind.

How the game works: three cards, highest hand wins

The main objective is simple: create the highest-ranking combination among all the players, using only the three cards you are dealt1. There are no community cards, no draws and no discards. You get three cards, everyone bets in turn, and the best hand at the showdown takes the pot. If everyone else folds, the last player standing wins without ever showing a card.

Before any cards move, every player puts a small forced amount into the pot. The boot guarantees there is always something to fight over, so even a table full of terrible hands produces a winner.

If you know Three Card Poker from Western casinos, the hand comparison will feel familiar: whoever has the higher three-card hand wins3. The big difference is who you are up against. In Three Card Poker you play against the dealer and the house edge; in Teen Patti you play against the other players, and the money moves around the table.

Hand rankings in Teen Patti

Teen Patti uses the standard poker hand rankings, adapted for three cards. The cards rank from high to low: Ace, King, Queen, Jack, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, with the Ace also able to play low4. From best to worst, the hands are:

  1. Trail (three of a kind). Three cards of the same rank. In standard poker rankings, three of a kind sits above two pair, one pair and a high card5, and since you only hold three cards, a trail is the strongest hand possible in Teen Patti. Three Aces beats everything.
  2. Pure sequence (straight flush). Three consecutive cards of the same suit, like 4, 5 and 6 of hearts.
  3. Sequence (straight). Three consecutive cards of mixed suits.
  4. Color (flush). Three cards of the same suit, not in sequence. If two players both have a flush, the highest card decides it.
  5. Pair. Two cards of the same rank6, with the third card breaking ties between equal pairs.
  6. High card. None of the above, and the highest card in your hand stands for you.

The familiar poker ladder, from Royal Flush down to High Card, is the same idea7; Teen Patti simply cuts it down to what three cards can make. A useful way to remember it: a trail beats a run, a run beats a flush, a flush beats a pair, and everything else comes down to your biggest card.

Blind or seen: how your bet is set

This is the feature that makes Teen Patti unlike almost any other card game. After the deal, you have a choice: look at your cards, or leave them face down and play blind.

A blind player has not looked at their cards. When you play blind, you must bet at least the minimum stake agreed for the table1. A seen player has looked at their cards, and that information costs you: if you are playing as seen, you must bet twice the minimum stake amount1. In other words, every bet you make as a seen player is double what a blind player would put in for the same action.

The result is a game of nerve. A blind player is betting cheap on nothing but guts, pressuring seen players who know exactly what they hold but must pay double to act on it. A blind player can look at their cards at any time and become a seen player, but there is no going back. A player who stays blind to the end can win a pot without ever knowing what they had.

If you have played poker, do not confuse this with the blinds in Texas Hold'em. In poker, the small blind and big blind are forced bets posted before the deal, usually half the minimum bet and the full minimum bet, by the first two players to the dealer's left8. In Teen Patti, blind and seen describe a choice every player makes on every hand, and it sets the price of your bets all the way through.

Betting structure around the table

A hand of Teen Patti runs in a circle. The boot goes into the pot first, then the cards are dealt and the action moves around the table, with each player in turn either putting in money to stay in the hand or folding to wait for the next deal. When the betting is finished and two or more players are still in, the remaining players compare hands, and the best three-card combination takes the whole pot1. There is no splitting in the standard game; one hand wins it all.

The blind and seen rule from the previous section is what shapes every decision here. Because a seen player always pays double, the pot grows quickly once several players have looked at their cards, and a blind player can keep the price of staying in relatively low. Tables usually agree on the boot and the minimum stake before the game starts. If you are joining a game, ask two questions before you sit down: what is the boot, and what is the minimum stake.

Where to play Teen Patti in a casino

Teen Patti is a fixture at India's licensed casinos, especially on the ships and hotel casinos of Goa.

Big Daddy's selection runs from Indian Teen Patti to American Roulette across three levels of stakes12.

Live dealer versions also exist online. Teen Patti Live is a licensed live dealer table game, registered in the Philippines under game ID tpl-22.713, so you can play against a real dealer on a real table from your phone, with the same three-card hands and the same rankings.

Playing Teen Patti online: apps, tournaments and social features

Teen Patti has moved from the festival table to the phone. Many apps let you play with friends at a private table, just as you would at home.

Online casinos carry the game too, often in several variations. One India-focused site lists more than five Teen Patti variations, including Joker, Hukam, Muflis, Royal and AK47, alongside live Andar Bahar, rummy and thousands of slots14. International casino sites also stock Teen Patti among their poker offerings, next to Hold'em and video poker15. The variations mostly tweak the hand rankings or add wild cards; Muflis, for example, flips the rankings so the lowest hand wins.

If you play online for real money, the practical points are the same as for any Indian gambling site: check that the site accepts Indian players and a payment method you can use, and read the table rules before you sit down, because the blind and seen multipliers can vary from one variation to the next. Our guide to online casinos in India covers how these sites work and how to fund an account.

Gambling in India is governed at the state level, under the framework of the Public Gambling Act of 1867, which restricted most forms of gambling and made games of pure chance illegal while treating games of skill differently16. The Supreme Court has classified rummy, poker and fantasy sports as skill games, and online skill gaming is legal at the central government level2.

The practical picture varies by state. Skill games are fully legal in Maharashtra, Delhi, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and about fifteen more states, while Tamil Nadu and Kerala have partial bans, with some formats prohibited and rules that change from time to time2. So whether a real-money Teen Patti app is available to you depends on where you are, and the rules can shift. Our page on gambling laws by state in India has the current detail for each state.

Teen Patti sits in a family of Indian card games that are worth knowing. Andar Bahar is even simpler: one card is the joker, and players bet on which side, Andar or Bahar, a matching card will appear.

On the Western side, Three Card Poker is the closest relative: you play your three-card hand against the dealer's, or bet that you will be dealt a pair or better, or do both at once6. If the dealer's hand outranks yours, you lose; if yours is higher, your bets pay even money3. It is a house game rather than a player-versus-player one, which makes it simpler but less psychological than Teen Patti.
