Esports at the SEA Games and Asian Games: Medal Events and Betting Markets

Esports is a medal sport at the SEA Games and Asian Games, with Dota 2, League of Legends, CS2, PUBG, Valorant, Overwatch, ROV and Mobile Legends on the program. Bookmakers price national-team matches with match winner, map, total kills and live markets, from 10 baht per bet.

Esports as a medal event at the SEA Games and Asian Games

Esports stopped being a side show at regional multi-sport games a while ago. It now sits on the medal program alongside badminton, basketball and boxing, which matters for two reasons. First, it means national teams play under federation rules, with country-versus-country fixtures rather than club brands. Second, it means the matches land in the same regulated sports-betting catalogs that carry those other sports.

That second point is the one that changes things for a bettor. When you look at a licensed operator's approved game list, esports sits in the same category as the traditional medal sports. A Philippine operator's approved electronic game list, for example, runs through American football, badminton, baseball, basketball, boxing, cricket, handball, ice hockey, MMA, motor racing, snooker and pool, table tennis and volleyball, all filed under sports betting4. Esports is priced and settled by the same machinery.

The practical consequence is that a SEA Games or Asian Games esports fixture behaves like any other international match on a betting site. You get a match winner market, you get map or game markets if the title is played in a series, and you get the same in-play coverage the operator gives its football and basketball. There is no separate "esports" rulebook for national-team play.

If you want the mechanics of how those markets settle, the how esports betting works page walks through matches, maps, odds and settlement in plain terms.

Which titles are on the program: Dota 2, League of Legends, Mobile Legends and more

The titles that show up at multi-sport games are the ones with a large enough regional player base and a publisher willing to run a national-team format. In practice that means the same shortlist you see on betting sites.

Which titles are on the program: Dota 2, League of Legends, Mobile Legends and more

One Thai-facing esports book lists Dota 2, League of Legends, CS2, PUBG, Valorant, Overwatch and ROV among its markets6. A Malaysian-facing operator lists Dota 2, Mobile Legends, PUBG, Valorant, CS2 and League of Legends7. Between those two lists you have the realistic medal-event pool: the two big PC MOBAs, the two big tactical shooters, the battle royale titles, and the mobile MOBA that dominates southeast Asian viewership.

Mobile Legends deserves its own line because it is the title most associated with the region. It is a regular fixture in Southeast Asian competition, and its markets are well developed. If you want the full picture of how those leagues and markets are structured, see Mobile Legends: Bang Bang betting.

For the PC titles, the market structures differ enough that they are worth reading separately. League of Legends betting covers the MOBA format, while Counter-Strike 2 betting covers maps, rounds and handicaps. If you are deciding which title to actually put money on, which esports games you can bet on compares titles and markets side by side.

One thing to keep straight: not every title a bookmaker offers is a medal event. Publishers and organizers pick the program, and the list shifts between editions. The betting catalog is always wider than the medal list.

Bet types: total kills, map winners and live props like first blood

The markets on a national-team esports match fall into three families, and they map onto the same families you would see on any other sport.

Match and series result. Who wins the match, who wins the series, and in a best-of format, who wins each map or game. A Malaysian-facing operator lists Dota 2 markets as match winner, map handicap and total kills7. A Thai-facing book describes its coverage as full-time result, match winner, total points and live in-play betting6.

Map and round markets. In a series, each map is its own event with its own winner and its own handicap line. This is where the map handicap concept comes in, and it is the market most affected by the series format. A best-of-one and a best-of-five are completely different betting propositions even between the same two teams, which is why Bo1, Bo3 and Bo5 is worth understanding before you stake anything.

Props and live markets. Total kills is the standard prop, and it is offered on both Dota 2 and PUBG7. Mobile Legends markets include match winner, series winner and first map7. PUBG markets include winning team, total kills and final placement7. On the live side, providers advertise MOBA, FPS and battle royale coverage with in-play betting, plus live streaming and real-time result analysis alongside the odds6.

If props are what you are after, esports prop bets covers total kills, odd/even kills, first blood and objectives in detail. And if you want to understand how the numbers move once a match is underway, how live esports betting odds work explains the mechanics.

Markets by title: Dota 2, CS2, LoL and mobile esports

There is no fixed odds range per title, and anyone who tells you otherwise is guessing. Odds are set per match, per market, and they move with the money and with what happens in the game. What you can say with confidence is which markets exist per title, because those are published.

TitleTypical marketsNotes
Dota 2Match winner, map handicap, total killsLong series formats make map markets the main event7
League of LegendsMatch winner, map winner, series resultSame MOBA structure as Dota 26
CS2Match winner, map winner, round marketsMap-based, so handicaps are central6
Mobile LegendsMatch winner, series winner, first mapThe dominant regional mobile title7
PUBGWinning team, total kills, final placementBattle royale placement markets are the distinctive ones7
Valorant, Overwatch, ROVMatch and map marketsOffered alongside the above6

The practical point about odds is that they are a function of the matchup, not the game. A national-team fixture between two evenly matched countries will price close to even money on the match winner. A fixture between a regional powerhouse and a qualifier will not. The title only changes which markets are available, not how the pricing works.

For a worked example of how a payout is calculated, published betting rules give a clean illustration. If one match in a doubles bet is abandoned and the other is won at odds of 1.67, a stake of S$30 pays S$50.108. That is the whole arithmetic: stake multiplied by the odds. There is no separate esports formula.

Bet limits: small minimums and ceilings set by the operator

Limits are set by the operator and by the regulator, and they vary enormously across the region. The useful thing is to know the floor and the ceiling where you are betting.

On the low end, stakes are genuinely small. A Thai-facing esports book advertises esports betting starting at a minimum of 10 baht per bet6. A Malaysian-facing operator asks for a minimum deposit of RM10 to get started7. Philippine betting guidance lists minimums of P 5.00 on standard bet types including win, place, forecast and extra double9. Singapore Pools rules set the minimum stake on remote football betting at no less than one dollar8.

On the high end, regulated markets publish hard ceilings. Canadian regulated electronic gaming devices in a designated high-bet area can offer maximum bets exceeding CAD$300.00 up to a maximum of CAD$3,000.0010. Japanese public betting has its own caps: keirin terms set a maximum of JPY 99,900 per bet11, and boat race terms set the same JPY 99,900 per bet limit, with a maximum of 999 bets per application and 9,999 bets per day14. Korean boat race betting tickets run from a minimum of KRW 100 to a maximum of KRW 100,00015.

What this means for esports specifically is that the ceiling is usually the operator's general sportsbook ceiling, not an esports-specific number. If you are betting on a SEA Games final at a licensed operator, the maximum is whatever that operator allows on its sportsbook. If you are betting at a small offshore site, the ceiling may be low and the withdrawal terms are the thing to check before you deposit.

Where esports betting is illegal: Singapore's official position

Esports betting is illegal in Singapore1. That is the plain position, and it is not a gray area.

The wider rule is that gambling activities in Singapore are prohibited unless they are exempted or licensed2. The legalized forms are social gambling, betting with Singapore Pools, casino gambling at Marina Bay Sands and Resorts World Sentosa, and jackpot gambling in private clubs17. Esports betting is not on that list. Social gambling is also not permitted on online platforms in Singapore18.

The Remote Gambling Act prohibits remote gambling activities and criminalizes the entire spectrum, from individual gamblers to the people who facilitate or provide remote gambling services19. Singapore Pools and the Singapore Turf Club were found suitable to be exempt operators under that Act, which is why betting with Singapore Pools is one of the legalized forms19.

There is also a venue rule that catches physical betting operations. A person must not conduct any betting operation, or conduct any gaming or lottery, in or from any place or premises in Singapore that is not an approved gambling venue20.

For visitors and foreign residents the position is the same as for citizens. Being on a tourist visa does not create an exemption. If you are in Singapore and want the full picture of what you can and cannot do, the Singapore country guide sets it out.

South Korea has a defined list of legal gambling3.

South Korea plans to add esports to legal sports betting
  • casino
  • horse racing
  • cycling racing
  • boat racing
  • lottery
  • sports promotion voting tickets
  • bullfighting

Esports is not on it today.

The plan is to change that. The government intends to bring esports into the state-controlled Sports Toto betting system by 2028. Until that happens, internet gambling is treated as illegal gambling in South Korea, alongside hwatu, poker and adult arcades3.

So the honest answer to "can I bet on esports in South Korea" is: not through a legal domestic channel yet, and the timeline for that changing is 2028. If you are a visitor or a foreign resident, the domestic legal list applies to you the same way it applies to citizens. The South Korea country guide covers the wider picture of what is and is not permitted there.

The Philippine scene: MPL round robins and licensed operators

The Philippines is the most developed esports betting market in the region, and the reason is regulatory rather than cultural. Electronic gaming operations offered within Philippine jurisdiction do not form part of the offshore gaming activities that were directed for banning, which keeps a domestic licensed market running21.

That licensed market is real and it is listed. PAGCOR publishes its accredited gaming system administrators and registered brands, and sports betting appears across those registers22. Playing through a licensed operator gives you a mechanism to seek redress when disputes arise, which is the practical difference between a licensed site and an unlicensed one5. PAGCOR also warns the public about fake online gaming sites and urges players to check the list of licensees on its website before accessing offshore gaming sites24.

The offshore side has strict eligibility rules that are worth knowing if you are a Filipino citizen. Offshore gaming is offered exclusively to offshore authorized players, which excludes Filipino citizens even if they are abroad, and excludes individuals in countries whose laws prohibit their citizens from participating in online gaming25. The eligibility test is that the player must be located outside the Philippines and not be a Filipino citizen26.

On the competition side, the domestic scene is busy. MPL Philippines runs a round robin format, and fixtures are priced by international bookmakers. TNC Pro Team was scheduled to play Twisted Minds PH in an MPL Philippines round robin at 15:30 on September 26, 2026, and Omega Esports was scheduled to play TNC Pro Team at 18:00 on September 27, 2026. A separate listing for the Omega Esports match showed odds of 1.733 and 1.938.

If you are in the Philippines and want to know how the wider gambling rules apply to you as a citizen, resident or visitor, the Philippines country guide is the place to start. For the betting side specifically, esports betting in Asia covers how the market works across the region, and esports betting as a visitor or expat deals with accounts, travel and the law.

Common Questions

Is esports betting legal in Singapore?

No. Esports betting is illegal in Singapore, and gambling is prohibited there unless it is exempted or licensed. Only social gambling, betting with Singapore Pools, casino gambling at Marina Bay Sands and Resorts World Sentosa, and jackpot gambling in private clubs are legalized forms.

What is the average payout on a Dota 2 esports bet?

There is no single average payout, because it depends on the odds on the match you back. As a worked example from published betting rules, a S$30 stake at odds of 1.67 returns S$50.10. Your return is simply your stake multiplied by the odds.

What is the minimum bet on an esports match?

It varies by operator and currency. One Thai-facing esports book starts at 10 baht per bet, a Malaysian-facing one takes a minimum deposit of RM10, and Philippine betting guidance lists minimums of P 5.00 on standard bet types.

Which esports titles can I bet on?

The common ones are Dota 2, League of Legends, CS2, PUBG, Valorant, Overwatch and ROV. Mobile Legends is widely offered too. Which titles appear on a given site depends on the operator, and not every title is a SEA Games or Asian Games medal event.

Can I bet on Mobile Legends and PUBG Mobile?

Yes, both are widely offered. Mobile Legends markets typically include match winner, series winner and first map, while PUBG markets include winning team, total kills and final placement. Mobile Legends is also a regular medal event at regional multi-sport games.

When will esports betting be legal in South Korea?

The government plans to bring esports into the state-controlled Sports Toto betting system by 2028. Until then, internet gambling is treated as illegal gambling in South Korea, alongside hwatu, poker and adult arcades.
