Betting Sites in South Korea

Betting Sites in South Korea

Korean players bet online through a state-run monopoly of sports and racing products and through dozens of offshore sportsbooks like Dafabet, MelBet, Stake and 1xBet. Here is what exists, how each option works, and how deposits and withdrawals in won actually behave.

South Korea

Home › Countries › South Korea › Sports Betting › Betting Sites in South Korea

South Korea's betting market runs on a short list of state products: casinos, horse racing, cycle racing (keirun), motorboat racing, lotteries, sports promotion voting tickets and bullfighting1. Internet gambling is illegal, alongside hwatu flower cards, poker and adult game rooms6.

Online gambling is prohibited outright, and the ban is strictly enforced, even though land-based gambling in several forms is not2. For online sports betting specifically, a 2022 Korean Supreme Court ruling is worth knowing about: betting from within South Korea on an overseas sports gambling site, receiving something like a sports promotion voting ticket over the internet and profiting from the results, counts as gambling through a prohibited act under the National Sports Promotion Act. The court added that this holds true even when the site is operated outside Korea by foreigners5. In plain terms, using an offshore sportsbook from Korean soil carries real legal risk for the person placing the bet, not just for the operator.

One narrow exception exists on the racing side. The Korea Racing Authority Act lets the Authority sell electronic betting tickets through information and communications networks, away from the racecourse and off-course betting centers, so legal online horse race betting does exist, but only through the state monopoly7. You can read more about the wider picture on our page on gambling in South Korea and the specific rules in our gambling laws in South Korea guide.

The legal online products are the ones run by state-affiliated bodies. Sports Toto and Proto cover fixed-odds sports betting on football, basketball and baseball, and you can read how those work on our Sports Toto Korea and Proto pages. Horse racing bets can be placed electronically through the Korea Racing Authority, with registration required: you file your name, device and account details with the Authority before buying electronic tickets, and you must be at least 21 years old to register7.

The government monopoly: what legal betting looks like

The stakes are small by international standards. The unit bet in Korean horse racing is 100 won, whatever type of bet you place8. Across gambling businesses, each operator's own regulations set an upper limit on purchases, which lies at up to KRW 100,000 per purchase, rising to KRW 300,000 at Kangwon Land, the one casino open to Korean citizens9. The design is deliberate: the state products are low-stakes, tightly capped and meant as mild entertainment, not a substitute for a full sportsbook.

State productWhat you bet onHow to bet onlineKey limits
Sports Toto / ProtoFootball, basketball, baseballRetail and online channelsPurchase caps set per operator9
Horse racingLocal race meetingsElectronic tickets via KRA registrationUnit bet 100 won; registration age 217
LotteriesLotto and instant gamesRetail networkPurchase caps set per operator9

Casinos are a separate track entirely. Almost all casinos in South Korea are open only to foreign visitors, since domestic gambling is tightly controlled under the law, but Kangwon Land is the one casino open to Korean citizens10. Korean citizens can gamble at exactly one land-based venue, Kangwon Land, while everyone else, citizens and foreign residents included, is limited to the state products described above. If you are a visitor, our pages on casinos in South Korea and gambling in South Korea as a visitor cover what is open to you.

Even the state monopoly frames its products with responsible gambling in mind. Sportstoto's responsible gaming code commits it to developing services such as self-diagnosis for players who may be overdoing it, and self-exclusion11.

Offshore betting sites and how they operate in Korea

Because the domestic products are limited, much of the real online sports betting action from Korea happens on offshore sites. There are over 40 online casino and betting sites targeting South Korean players which accept Bitcoin, and review platforms list only operators that currently accept players from the Republic of Korea2. These are the sites Koreans actually mean when they talk about online sportsbooks: names like 1xBet, Dafabet, MelBet and Stake, plus the unofficial "private toto sites" that crop up and disappear around the edges of the market.

Offshore operators serving Korea are typically licensed and regulated by authorities such as Curacao, Malta or Gibraltar, not by anything in Korea12. Many offer Korean-language options and support for the South Korean won, which makes deposits and gameplay smoother, and the bigger ones run live dealer tables including live blackjack, roulette, baccarat, poker, game shows and live bingo12. Game integrity at reputable sites is checked by independent testing houses like iTech Labs and eCOGRA12.

Access is the constant friction point. Some Korean financial institutions have started blocking transactions to and from online gambling-related websites, which is why offshore sites serving Korea rely heavily on crypto payments and why their web addresses change so often2. Combine that payment blocking with the legal position described above, and the practical picture is clear: offshore betting from Korea is possible, but it is a cat-and-mouse arrangement with no consumer protection from Korean authorities if something goes wrong. Our page on gambling scams and illegal sites in South Korea goes deeper on that risk.

Other operators that accept Korean players: Dafabet, MelBet, Stake and more

Dafabet is one of the longest-standing names in the Asian market. It has served the Asia Pacific market since 2004 and offers sports betting, an online casino and online games, with 24-hour live customer support seven days a week13. It is licensed and regulated in compliance with the laws of Curacao18. Dafabet accepts a long list of account currencies including KRW, alongside CNY, MYR, THB, VND, IDR, INR, USD, GBP, EUR and mBTC4. Its sportsbook runs on the IBC platform, it allows only one account per household, and it offers betting on horse racing as well as the usual sports markets4. You must be over 18 to bet, and once a bet is placed it cannot be canceled19. We review the operator in full on our Dafabet review page.

MelBet covers sports, slots, live casino, esports and fast games, with baseball among its top sports14. Placing a bet is straightforward:

  1. Register if you are new, then top up your account.
  2. Choose your odds in the Sports or Live sections.
  3. Pick a bet type on the slip: single, accumulator or system.
  4. Winnings are credited automatically, and placed bets appear under My Account in the bet history20.

See our Melbet review for details.

Stake is the most Korea-friendly of the crypto operators: Korean players can deposit and withdraw directly in Korean won3. Our Stake review covers the platform in depth.

BK8 partners with more than 25 licensed game studios, is fully browser-based with no download required on mobile, tablet or desktop, and requires players to be 18 or of legal gambling age in their jurisdiction15.

bet365 is a global name many Korean bettors look for. Its odds are shown with plus and minus signs based on a 100-unit wager in the United States and Canada, and the payout is calculated automatically in the betting slip21. On payments, you can store a maximum of five debit cards; if you funded your account with multiple methods, a withdrawal may be split proportionally between them, and if a withdrawal to a previous deposit method is not possible, the money goes to your bank account by bank transfer16.

888sport publishes detailed withdrawal rules: the minimum withdrawal is £5 for a 888sport account, and members must verify their identity and email address before any withdrawal can be made17. Note that 888sport is not permitted to pay withdrawals to Visa cards issued in Korea, among other countries17.

1xBet is the offshore name Koreans search for most, and it appears throughout the offshore market serving Korea alongside the operators above. We cover its countries, license and payments on our 1xBet review page.

Payments: KRW deposits, Tether transfers and withdrawal limits

Payment method choice is where Korean players will feel the situation most. The comfortable end of the spectrum is Stake, which handles KRW directly: deposits and withdrawals both run between KRW 70,000 and KRW 3,000,000 via bank transfer3. Dafabet also lists KRW as an account currency, and its cashier works by selecting your currency at account creation, logging in and clicking the cashier button4.

Dafabet's payment options include Local Bank Transfer, online banking, e-wallets, Skrill, Neteller, Tether and cryptocurrency22. Its limits vary by method:

Dafabet methodMin per transactionMax per transaction
Local Bank Transfer1,000300,000
One e-wallet option5001,500,000
Another e-wallet option67567,500
Other methodsvariesup to 3,075,25023

Withdrawals take 1 to 4 banking days to reach your account after payout, and requests made after 4pm on the second and fourth Friday of the month are processed the following Monday22. You can cancel a withdrawal request any time within 48 hours of submitting it, and you can register up to three bank accounts for Local Bank Transfer withdrawals4. Two rules matter for planning: your withdrawal method should be the same as your deposit method, and credit card or e-wallet accounts must show the same personal details as your Dafabet registration, with no third-party transactions allowed4.

Crypto is the workaround most offshore bettors in Korea use, since Korean banks block gambling-related transactions2. To get crypto in the first place, Korean players can buy Bitcoin with won on exchanges such as Huobi, Binance or UpBit2. For stablecoin transfers, Tether on the TRC20 network is a common option, with deposit minimums and maximums set per operator; one Asian-facing operator, for example, lists Tether (TRC20) deposits from 2,000 up to 1,000,000 in local currency units24. Withdrawal speed depends on the operator: comparable crypto sportsbooks process most cryptocurrency withdrawals instantly before broadcasting them to the blockchain, while some quote 24 to 48 hours for crypto payouts and 1 to 3 days for bank transfers25. If you withdraw in a currency different from your deposit currency at a site like 888sport, the conversion uses a regularly updated exchange rate with a small fee, and withdrawals there are made in GBP, USD or EUR17.

What to check before signing up: age, identity documents and account rules

Before you create an account anywhere, a few checks save trouble later.

What to check before signing up: age, identity documents and account rules

Age. Dafabet requires you to be over 18, or above the age at which gambling is legal under the law that applies to you, whichever is greater19. The stakes for getting this wrong are explicit: winnings accrued while underage are forfeited, and underage transactions are void, with deposits returned18. BK8 applies the same 18-plus or legal-age standard15. For the state products, the bar is higher: electronic horse racing betting tickets require registration and a minimum age of 217.

Identity documents. Offshore sportsbooks ask for verification at withdrawal, not usually at deposit. Expect to provide:

  • A valid photo ID such as a driver's license, passport or government-issued ID27
  • Copies of the front and back of every credit card used to deposit27
  • Proof of address, such as a utility bill or credit card statement, and in exceptional cases notarized documents17

Dafabet states that no identification is needed to make a withdrawal, but that proof of ID, front and back, plus a recent utility bill may be requested for security purposes4. Verification windows can be tight: at 888sport, if documents are required, a withdrawal request can sit pending for up to 21 days before being reversed, and you get 7 days to complete account verification before that happens17.

Account rules. Dafabet allows one account per household and prohibits multiple accounts4. After three failed password attempts, the account locks for 30 minutes, and the site recommends changing your password every 3 to 6 months without reusing old ones19. Third-party transactions are not allowed, meaning the name on your card or e-wallet must match your account22.

Security. A warning worth heeding with any crypto-facing operator: Dafabet says it will never ask for your wallet recovery phrase, passwords, PIN codes or private keys, and will never ask you to install apps or connect a web3 wallet28. Treat any such request, on any site, as a scam.

Responsible gambling tools and self-exclusion

The offshore operators serving Korea do offer genuine control tools. Dafabet lets players define their own responsible gaming limits and provides management tools to set and control them; it also offers permanent self-exclusion by contacting customer services, and excluded players are barred from playing29. Its own suggested self-test is a practical one: try stopping gambling for two weeks or a month, and if you cannot, treat that as a signal29. Offshore licenses increasingly require this: the Anjouan gaming license, for example, requires operators to provide functional responsible gaming tools including self-exclusion and deposit limits30.

On the Korean side, gambling addiction counseling is available mainly through in-person visits and telephone counseling, and there are regional Gamblers Anonymous self-help groups across the country6. The state monopoly contributes too, with Sportstoto committed to self-diagnosis services and self-exclusion11.

If you want to lock yourself out of the legal venues, our page on self-exclusion and entry limits in South Korea explains the process, and our gambling help in South Korea page lists where to call.

Common Questions

Is online betting legal in South Korea?

No. Online gambling is prohibited in South Korea, even though several land-based forms such as casinos, horse racing, cycle racing, motorboat racing, lotteries and sports promotion betting tickets are legal. Betting from within Korea on an overseas sports gambling site is treated as gambling through a prohibited act and is punishable.

What documents do I need to withdraw from 1xBet as a Korean player?

Offshore sportsbooks generally ask for a valid photo ID such as a passport, driver's license or government-issued ID when additional verification is required, and copies of the front and back of any credit card used to deposit. A recent utility bill may also be requested for security purposes.

Why are betting site addresses blocked in Korea?

Some Korean financial institutions have started blocking transactions to and from online gambling-related websites, which cuts off the payment routes offshore sites rely on. This is one reason offshore operators serving Korea keep changing addresses and push crypto payments.

Can I deposit and withdraw in Korean won?

Yes, on some offshore sites. Stake lets Korean players deposit and withdraw in KRW between 70,000 and 3,000,000, and Dafabet lists KRW among its accepted account currencies. Many other sites work in US dollars or crypto instead.

How fast are cryptocurrency withdrawals on 1xBet?

Exact 1xBet times are not published, but comparable crypto sportsbooks process most cryptocurrency withdrawals instantly before sending them to the blockchain, while some operators quote 24 to 48 hours for crypto payouts. Blockchain confirmation time adds a short wait on top.

What is the minimum age to bet on Dafabet?

You must be at least 18 years old, or above the age at which gambling is legal under the law that applies to you, whichever is greater. Winnings accrued while underage are forfeited and underage transactions are void, with deposits returned.

How long do Dafabet withdrawals take?

Funds may take 1 to 4 banking days to reach your account after Dafabet pays out, and requests submitted after 4pm on the second and fourth Friday of the month are processed the following Monday. You can cancel a withdrawal request within 48 hours of submitting it.

Can I cancel a bet after placing it?

No. On Dafabet, once a bet is placed it cannot be canceled. Bets on suspended, abandoned or terminated matches are void, with the stake returned on single selections, but a normal settled bet stands.
