What slot bonus features are

Open any modern slot and you are rarely looking at a plain spin-and-pay machine. Games today come loaded with scatters, wilds, free spins, bonus rounds, collapsing reels and expanding reels, and the list keeps growing10. These are the features that decide how a game behaves: how often it pays, how big the peaks are, and what happens when the right symbols line up.

The features are not hidden. Every game explains them in its paytable. On casino floor machines, the third page of the payoff table shows the scatter logo, the wild (alternate) symbol and specific instructions on how to switch the special features on11. Online, the same information sits behind an info or rules button. Before you play anything unfamiliar, that screen is the first place to look, because two games can look identical and play completely differently.

A typical example of how a feature is wired in: on a classic-style 777 slot, qualifying red 7 symbol combinations during normal play trigger a free spins round, and depending on how the reels land, extra free spins can be added during the round, extending it further12. One trigger, then a chain of consequences. That pattern, a symbol combination opening a separate mode with its own rules, is the backbone of nearly every feature described on this page.

If you are new to slots altogether, the basics of reels, symbols and the random number generator are covered in how slot machines work, and wild and scatter symbols have their own page at what wild and scatter symbols do. This page covers the features that sit on top of those foundations.

Free spins and multipliers

Free spins are the most common bonus feature in online slots, and multipliers are what turn them from pleasant into potentially large. The two usually arrive together.

Free spins and multipliers

The simplest version is a flat multiplier applied to every win in the round. On Vegas Payouts Rapid Hold & Win, all payline wins are boosted by a 3x multiplier during the free spins round, and the round can be retriggered for up to 120 spins in total1. Whatever the paytable says a combination pays, the game pays triple while the round lasts.

Other games build ladders. In Bastet and Cats Deluxe, the win multiplier climbs a ladder of 3x, then 6x, then 9x, then 15x over the course of the round2. Good Fortune gives you a choice of how the round plays: 13 free games carrying a 2x or 3x multiplier, with multipliers in the game reaching up to 30x overall3.

The most elaborate design ties the multiplier to cascades. On Curse of Medusa, the win multiplier resets at the start of the free spins round, then increases by 1x on every cascade with no cap, and unlike in the base game it does not reset between spins4. So a long run of cascades on a single spin pushes the multiplier higher, and it stays there for the next spin. Landing 3 or 4 scatters on the extra reel during the round adds 5 or 10 extra free spins respectively4.

How do you get into these rounds? Usually through scatters. On video slots at Casino Corona, at least 3 scatter symbols appearing anywhere automatically activates the corresponding special feature13. Some machines also require bonus symbols to land on an active payline for you to be eligible for the bonus event, which is one more reason to check the rules before reducing your line count. How free spins and bonus rounds trigger in general is covered in more detail at how free spins and bonus rounds trigger.

Cascading reels and expanding symbols

Cascading reels go by several names: tumbling reels, collapsing reels, falling reels. They all mean the same thing. When you land a win, the winning symbols are removed and new symbols drop into the empty positions. If the new arrangement also wins, it pays too, and the process repeats until no new win forms. One paid spin can therefore produce a whole chain of payouts.

Sugar Rush is a straightforward example. Its low-value symbols, stars, hearts, candies and jelly treats, appear frequently and help trigger tumbling wins5. The frequent small symbols mean the cascade chain starts often, which is exactly the kind of design that suits a multiplier that grows with each cascade, as on Curse of Medusa described above4.

Cascades pair naturally with multipliers because each successive win in the chain is worth more than the last. That combination, tumbling symbols plus an uncapped rising multiplier, is what produces the very large single-round wins some games are known for. The trade-off is that the base game pays less often, which is the volatility story explained at slot volatility.

Expanding symbols work differently. Instead of removing symbols, the game makes them bigger. A classic example comes from the pachislo side of the family: Sekkou no Tsurugi introduced triple-symbol reels, where each reel carries symbols three times the normal height, so one symbol effectively occupies three positions14. In online slots the same idea appears as expanding wilds that stretch to fill an entire reel, or symbols that grow after landing. The effect is the same: more positions covered, more paylines affected, bigger clusters possible.

A related mechanic is the collector. Bountiful Birds accumulates red, green and blue bird feed bags as they appear on the reels, and the color of the bag determines which of three bonus rounds activates6. Nothing is removed and nothing expands, but symbols you collect over many spins gradually build toward a feature. Games that mix collection, cascades and expanding symbols in one package are increasingly common, so expect to meet two or three of these mechanics in a single title.

Bonus rounds and buy features

A bonus round is a separate mode inside the game with its own rules, and it is where most of a game's character lives. Vegas Payouts Rapid Hold & Win, for instance, has a Rapid Re-spins feature triggered by 5 or more Instant Prize symbols (green and white casino chips) in the base game, or 4 during free spins, plus a distinct bonus round on top1.

Pick bonuses are one common type. Curse of Medusa has a jackpot pick game that triggers randomly after all cascades finish, with collected wild symbols increasing the chance. When it fires, 12 face-down tokens appear and you keep revealing them until three matching prizes show up4. There is no skill involved, just the reveal, but the picking format gives the round a different rhythm from free spins.

Then there is the buy feature. Instead of waiting for scatters to land, you pay a fixed multiple of your stake to enter the bonus round immediately. The typical range is 50x to 100x of your stake7. Real prices vary widely:

GameWhat you buyPrice

Curse of MedusaEnhanced free spins (15 to 18 spins, 2x or 3x multiplier increase per cascade)200x the stake4

Some games add a twist to the price. Bastet and Cats Deluxe shows a random Special Buy offer every time you open the Buy Bonus screen, which is either the same price as the regular option or lower2. So the cost of the same feature can change from one visit to the next.

Whether buying is worth it is a volatility and bankroll question, not a value question: the game's overall return does not improve because you paid up front. The mechanics, prices and where the option is restricted are covered at feature buy slots.

3-reel vs 5-reel slots: where features appear

The number of reels shapes what features a game can carry. Classic 3-reel machines have limited space and limited paylines, so their features tend to be simple: a bonus symbol combination, a nudge, a hold. The Japanese pachislo machines, which are 3-reel slots with a skill stop, illustrate the format well. On Special Oasis, the bonus symbols are one type each of Big and Regular, played at a 2-coin bet16. Some 5th-generation machines even have bonus symbol combinations that pay nothing at all when they align, a 0-medal combination, existing purely as a signal that something else is happening16.

3-reel vs 5-reel slots: where features appear

Video slots have far more room. Multi-payline and multi-reel slots run 5 to 6 reels with 25 to 50 or more adjustable paylines, carrying stacked wilds, cascading symbols and bonus rounds; full video slots run 5 to 7 reels with 10 to 100 or more paylines10. More reels mean more symbol positions, and more positions make cascades, expanding symbols, collection meters and multi-reel jackpot features possible. That is why the feature-heavy games described above are almost all 5-reel or larger.

Reel count also changes how bonus symbols behave. On most video slots, bonus symbols do not have to be on consecutive reels from left to right, the way most paying symbols do17. Scatters in particular often count anywhere on the screen, which is what makes 3-scatter triggers workable on a 5x3 or larger grid. On a 3-reel machine there is simply nowhere for that kind of flexibility to go.

RTP: why 95% or more matters

Return to Player, or RTP, is a percentage that shows how much a slot is built to pay back over a very long time8. A game at 96% is designed to return about 96 credits for every 100 wagered, measured across millions of spins, not across your session. Features are part of this number: the free spins, the multipliers, the cascades, the pick bonuses, all of it is baked into the calculation. A game with a spectacular bonus round has a base game tuned to pay for it.

What counts as good? Around 95% is a reasonable floor for online slots. Bastet and Cats Deluxe sits at 95%, and its own rules note that RTP should be considered alongside a game's volatility9. Vegas Payouts Rapid Hold & Win runs at 96.25% to 96.33%15. Some operators tune exclusive titles higher still, with one promoting VIP-exclusive slots at 98% or higher7. For comparison, the average return on older-style machines has been measured at around 92 percent18, so the gap between an older machine and a modern online slot is real money over time.

Two things worth knowing. First, the same slot title can sometimes exist in different RTP versions, so it is always smarter to check the RTP inside the game's info screen rather than trusting a number you remember8. That point is covered fully at can the same slot have different RTP versions. Second, RTP says nothing about how the returns are distributed. Two games at 96% can feel completely different if one pays steadily and the other hoards its returns for rare bonus rounds. That distribution is the volatility question, explained at slot volatility, and the full mechanics of RTP are at slot return to player.

How stake limits change feature play

Your stake and the features interact in ways that are worth understanding before you play.

How stake limits change feature play

First, on paylines. On five-reel video slots, paybacks are proportional to the coins wagered per payline, with no jackpot jump for betting the max17. In other words, on these games betting more per line scales your wins proportionally; it does not unlock a better paytable. That is different from some older machines where the top prize is only available at max bet, a question examined at should you bet the max on a slot machine. It also connects to the payline rule mentioned earlier: on some machines, bonus symbols must land on an active payline for you to be eligible for the bonus event17. If you reduce your active lines, you may be switching off your own bonus trigger.

Second, on bet options that change the game. Vegas Payouts Rapid Hold & Win offers an Ante Bet, an option that costs a percentage of your bet but increases your chances of landing the feature symbols; with the Ante Bet taken up, the RTP runs 96.25% to 96.33%1. You are paying a little more per spin for a better shot at the bonus round.

Third, on buy features. Buying a round at 100x your stake means the feature costs 100 times whatever your base bet is, so the price scales directly with your stake setting7. At a small bet the buy is cheap in absolute terms; at a large bet it is a serious amount of money on a single round. The typical 50x to 100x range means a feature buy can cost as much as an hour of ordinary spins7.

Finally, remember that not all machines are the same: some pay more often with smaller prizes, others pay rarely but bigger19. Your stake size should reflect which type you are sitting at, because a high-variance game at a stake sized for a low-variance one can end a session quickly. Bet sizing generally is covered at how much a slot spin costs.

Where to find these features online

Feature-rich slots are everywhere online, and the games named on this page give you a sense of the range. Sugar Rush and Good Fortune are colorful, cascade-heavy games with free spins, tumbling wins and buy options3. Vegas Payouts Rapid Hold & Win layers re-spins, instant prize symbols, free spins and a 3x multiplier on top of each other1. Bastet and Cats Deluxe and Curse of Medusa show how far multiplier design has gone, with ladders and uncapped cascade multipliers respectively4. Bountiful Birds demonstrates the collector mechanic6.

To judge any game you open, use the same checklist the casino floor machines imply11:

  1. Find the paytable.
  2. Read the scatter and wild rules.
  3. Check the RTP on the info screen.
  4. Look at what the bonus round actually does before you commit money.

Trying a game in demo mode first is a sensible way to see its features fire without cost, covered at free demo slots vs real money slots.

Common Questions

What do multipliers do in slot games?

A multiplier scales a win by a set amount. A 3x multiplier turns a 10-credit payline win into 30 credits. Some games raise the multiplier with each cascade in a bonus round, and it can climb without a cap until the round ends.

What is the buy feature in slots?

It is an option that lets you skip straight to a bonus round by paying a fixed multiple of your stake, commonly 50x to 100x. One game charges 32.40x, another 100x, and a third offers an enhanced round at 200x the stake.

Are cascading reels the same as tumbling reels?

Yes. Cascading, tumbling and collapsing reels all describe the same mechanic: winning symbols disappear and new ones drop in, so a single spin can produce several wins in a row, often with a rising multiplier.

What does RTP mean on a slot?

Return to Player is the percentage a slot is built to pay back over a very long time. A game at 96% is designed to return 96 credits per 100 wagered across millions of spins. The same title can exist in different RTP versions, so check the info screen.

Do free spins pay real money?

Yes. Free spins inside a slot game are real-money rounds: you do not pay for each spin, but the wins are credited like any other. They are different from promotional free spins a casino may give, which usually carry withdrawal conditions.

Which slot features trigger the most often?

Scatter-triggered features usually need at least 3 scatter symbols anywhere on the reels. Low-value symbols such as stars, hearts and candies appear frequently and help set off tumbling wins, while full bonus rounds are rarer by design.
