Melco Resorts and Entertainment has opened City of Dreams Mediterranean in Limassol, Cyprus. The venue officially opened on July 11, after a soft opening in June1.

The property cost 600 million euros, or $650 million, and Melco describes it as Europe's largest integrated resort1. It houses some 500 guest rooms and suites, 8,000 square meters of MICE space, an outdoor amphitheater, a family adventure park, dining and luxury retail1.

The casino floor covers 7,500 square meters and includes table games, a designated poker area, slot machines and live entertainment. The property also houses a VIP members club1.

Melco Chairman and CEO Lawrence Ho said the opening "marks the start of the most exciting chapter" and that it "allows Cyprus to unlock new markets in the region and beyond"1. Grant Johnson, Property Manager of City of Dreams Mediterranean, said "Cyprus is now ready to compete across Europe and the Middle East in luxury tourism and large-scale conferences"1.

What it means for players

City of Dreams Mediterranean is in Cyprus, not in any of the Asian markets this guide covers, so it does not change entry rules, game availability or house rules at venues in Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, South Korea, Macau, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand or Vietnam. For players in those markets, the practical effect is indirect: it is a new large-scale casino resort competing for the same regional tourism and conference business, and it gives Melco, an operator already active in Macau and the Philippines, a European property.

The casino area includes table games, a designated poker area and slot machines1. The report does not state which table games are offered, the minimum bets, the currency used on the floor, entry requirements, dress codes or whether locals and visitors face different rules. Those details have not been reported. General rules on who can enter casinos and integrated resorts in Asia, and what can be played inside, are set out in our guide to casinos and integrated resorts in Asia.

What happens next

No further dates have been reported. The report gives no opening schedule for any additional phases, no visitor or revenue targets and no details on licensing conditions in Cyprus1.
