Sands China indicated that the Londoner Grand Casino in Cotai, Macau, was scheduled to reopen in December 2024, the same month part of the Londoner Grand hotel was expected to open, according to a regulatory filing the company issued in July 20241. The casino had been temporarily closed by renovation work at the Londoner, a UK-themed integrated resort owned by Sands China1.

The casino sits inside the Londoner, whose two hotel towers above it are being converted from the Sheraton Grand Macao into the Londoner Grand1. The Sheraton Grand Macao opened in 2012 and, at 4,000-odd rooms, was both the largest hotel in Macau and the largest Sheraton in the world1. Sheraton Hotels and Resorts is a US chain owned by Marriott International, and the Sheraton brand is exiting Macau1.

The revamped hotel will reportedly hold 2,405 rooms, down from the Sheraton Grand Macao's roughly 4,000, but that figure includes 1,500 suites, up from 3601. In the filing, Sands China set out its construction schedule:

"We plan the completion of the first tower by year end 2024, and of the second tower by May 2025."

The same report said sources familiar with the matter expected the Londoner Grand to soft-open by the end of September 2024, which would be earlier than the December timing implied in the filing1. As of late July 2024, rooms at the Sheraton Grand Macao were still listed on accommodation booking sites but could not be reserved from late September onwards1. The renovation also weighed on Sands China's second quarter results1.

What it means for players

The Londoner Grand Casino is part of the Londoner on the Cotai strip, one of the casinos and integrated resorts in Asia that draw visitors to Macau. While the casino was closed for renovation, its gaming floor was not available to players; the December 2024 reopening date in the filing points to gaming resuming there around the same time the first hotel tower was due to be finished1. The hotel side of the property was being rebuilt around the casino, so room capacity at the site was set to fall from about 4,000 rooms to 2,405, even as suite numbers rose to 1,5001. For anyone planning a trip to Macau, the practical effect was fewer standard rooms at that address and a casino floor that had been out of use during the works. Rules on who may enter Macau casinos and what they can play are set out in the Macau gambling guide.

What happens next

Sands China said the first tower of the Londoner Grand was planned for completion by the end of 2024 and the second by May 20251. The filing implied part of the hotel would open in December 2024, the month the casino was scheduled to reopen1. Sources familiar with the matter said the hotel would soft-open by the end of September 20241. No further reopening dates have been reported.
