What online rummy is and where it stands in India

Online rummy is the digital version of Indian rummy, the 13-card game played in homes and clubs across the country. It is played by 2 to 6 players with two decks of cards, and each player is dealt 13 cards. The goal is to arrange all your cards into sequences and sets, with at least two sequences, one of which must be a pure sequence, meaning three or more cards of the same suit in order with no joker or wild card2.

The game comes in two formats, 13-card and 21-card, though the 13-card version is what almost every online table runs. A set is three or more cards of the same value in different suits, and it can run up to five cards if a joker is used. An impure sequence is three or more cards of the same suit in order with one or more jokers filling gaps5.

On the legal side, the Supreme Court has classified rummy as a game of skill under the Public Gambling Act, 1867, which is why it has long been treated differently from games of pure chance at the central level7. That position changed in law in 2025, as the next section explains, and several states have their own restrictions, covered later in this page.

The 2025 law: what it bans and when it takes effect

The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025 imposes a complete ban on all forms of online money games in India. This covers games of chance, games of skill, and any mix of the two, along with their advertising, promotion and facilitation3. The Act also places a stronger emphasis on consumer protection, responsible gaming and harm prevention8.

Section 5 of the Act bars banks and payment systems from processing transactions for online money games, which is the practical mechanism behind the ban9. The Act does, however, make room for online social games, which can be recognized, categorized and registered with the designated authority and facilitated for recreational and educational purposes10. In plain terms: free-to-play rummy without money at stake sits on one side of the line, and real-money rummy sits on the other.

The practical risk for a player is that deposits and withdrawals to and from rummy sites can be blocked by the payment ban, and the operator pages described on this page may not remain available. Check the current position before adding money.

RummyCircle at a glance

RummyCircle calls itself India's biggest rummy website and claims more than 70 million registered players, with thousands of players online throughout the day1. Its games run 24 hours a day, all year, and you can choose between free practice games and cash games11.

The real-money variants on offer are Points Rummy, 101 Pool Rummy, 201 Pool Rummy and Deals Rummy, plus a variant called Raise Rummy1. The shuffle is certified by iTech Labs, so no dealer is needed online, and the platform says it complies with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) for payments13.

Creating an account is free. You sign up with a desired username, a password and a personal email ID, on the desktop site, the mobile site or the app, and you can link the account to Facebook for quick registration1. The minimum amount to play a cash tournament is Rs. 251.

Points, Pool and Deals Rummy: how each variant works

The three cash variants share the same 13-card rules but score differently.

Points Rummy is the fastest format. Each point has a pre-decided rupee value at the table, for example Rs. 4 per point. The winner gets zero points and wins the sum of the losers' points multiplied by the point value, minus the RummyCircle fee. In a worked example from the operator: six players at a Rs. 860 table with a point value of Rs. 4, where the losers finish with 45, 78, 23, 20 and 40 points, give the winner 4 x (45 + 78 + 23 + 20 + 40) = Rs. 824, credited after the fee is deducted14.

Pool Rummy comes as 101 Pool or 201 Pool. Every player accumulates points as they lose hands, and the player who reaches 101 or 201 points is eliminated from the game. The winner is the last player standing and gets zero points. In a prize example, five players joining a pool at Rs. 50 entry fee create a total prize of Rs. 250, credited after the RummyCircle fee is deducted16.

Deals Rummy is played with chips rather than running points. Each player gets an equal number of chips, and one chip equals one point. The winner of each deal collects chips equal to the losing players' points, and the player with the most chips after all the deals wins. It comes as Best of 2 and Best of 6, for 2 to 6 players. In the operator's example, six players at a table where the losers finish with 10, 20, 30, 35 and 40 points give the winner 135 chips18.

Players: 2 to 6

The points system: card values, jokers and how losers are scored

Card values are simple. Ace, King, Queen and Jack each carry 10 points. All other numbered cards carry their face value, so a 7 counts 7 points and a 3 counts 3 points. Jokers and wild cards carry zero points21.

The points system: card values, jokers and how losers are scored

Each game uses two jokers: the printed joker, which acts as a wild card, and a randomly selected joker card drawn for that game15.

How a loser is scored depends on their hand:

  • If the loser has the two compulsory sequences, one of which is pure, they are scored only on the cards not part of a set or sequence21.
  • If the loser does not have the two compulsory sequences, they get the sum of the points carried by all cards in their hand, capped at 80 points21.
  • An invalid declaration, meaning declaring without meeting the game objective, costs 80 points22.
  • If a player misses three consecutive turns, it counts as a middle drop with a loss of 40 points2. In Deals Rummy, the player is dropped automatically with the middle drop score, capped at 40 points in two-player games18.

Dropping out voluntarily also has a fixed cost: 20 points in 101 Pool and 25 points in 201 Pool, while drops are not allowed in Best of 2 and Best of 3 games2.

There are scoring variations worth knowing. In some games Jack, Queen and King count 20 points each to raise the stakes, and some versions give the winner extra points for holding a joker or penalize a loser for jokers left in hand, while others charge no points for leftover jokers23.

Free practice games or cash games: what each requires

Every game on the platform is available in two modes, and you choose each time you sit down12.

Practice games are absolutely free. If you are new to rummy cash games, the operator itself suggests starting with practice matches, which cost nothing and prepare you for real-money play1.

Cash games and tournaments run 24 hours a day, and to play any of them you must first add money to your account13. Cash tournaments are played for real cash with prizes in INR, and they run around the clock in a knockout format20. There is no minimum or maximum cash prize for the game itself; what you can win depends on the table and your play13.

Deposits, withdrawals and KYC: the payment process

You can add money with credit cards, debit cards, eWallets or Netbanking1. All accounts are KYC verified to prevent fraud, so expect to submit identity documents before you can withdraw13.

Deposits, withdrawals and KYC: the payment process

The withdrawal process works like this:

  1. Winnings are added to your account and can be withdrawn at any time from the My Account page by clicking Withdraw Cash13.
  2. On your first withdrawal request, you provide your bank account number and IFSC code; these are auto-filled afterwards25.
  3. Your KYC documents and PAN card must be verified before a withdrawal can be made, and the PAN card details must match the KYC documents25.
  4. The name on your bank account must match the name on the KYC document, and the same rule applies to a UPI ID if you use one: the name on the UPI ID must match your KYC documents25.
  5. An applicable service fee is charged on winnings25.

Once a withdrawal request is taken, it is processed instantly1. If a request is flagged for manual review, the status shows "Request Undergoing Checks" and the amount is credited within 3 working days if all checks are passed25. Two banking quirks are worth knowing: IMPS transfers are not accepted at some cooperative banks, in which case withdrawals are processed within 3 bank working days, and IMPS transactions can fail if the receiving bank is under maintenance, in which case the withdrawal may go through later or be reversed25.

You can change your bank account details on the Withdrawals Page after verifying your identity with an OTP sent to your registered email ID or phone number25.

Restricted states

RummyCircle's terms allow cash play only as long as you are not playing from Assam, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Nagaland and Sikkim4. Real-money online gaming is banned at the state level in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana7.

The restriction also follows the money: withdrawals are not processed to bank accounts based in Assam, Odisha, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Nagaland and Sikkim, so even a player who registered elsewhere can be blocked from cashing out to a bank account in one of those states25. If you live in, or bank in, any of these states, cash rummy is effectively closed to you.

Tournaments

RummyCircle hosts what it describes as the biggest online rummy tournaments in India, played across multiple tables with 6 players per table6. Tournaments are held on a daily, weekly and monthly basis22.

There are two entry types: free registration tournaments and low-fee tournaments. To take part, you register and book a seat in advance13. Cash tournaments run 24x7 in a knockout format with real cash prizes in rupees20.

The minimum amount to play a cash tournament is Rs. 251. Note that advertised prize pools are tentative: the operator states the monthly figure is a tentative total that may change and is not guaranteed to be paid out1.

App and support

The RummyCircle app is available for Android and iOS users, and the game is also playable on the mobile website20. The Android app can be downloaded from the Google Playstore, the Apple app store, or the RummyCircle website itself1. One regional help page notes the app is for Android users only with iOS users playing on the mobile site, so check the store for your device15.

App and support

Support runs around the clock. You contact the customer support team by emailing support@rummycircle.com from your registered email ID, and the team is available 24x721.

Responsible play

RummyCircle carries a plain disclaimer on its game pages: "This game may be habit-forming or financially risky. Play responsibly."15 The operator enables play limits to encourage responsible play among its players1.

The E-Gaming Federation describes responsible play as helping users reduce or stop excessive gameplay, and the 2025 law itself puts consumer protection and harm prevention at the center of India's online gaming framework8. If you want to stop for a while, self-exclusion is the standard tool: you ask the operator to suspend your account for a fixed period, and during that time the suspension is enforced and cannot be reversed26.

For support beyond the operator, note that India has no national gambling helpline; the National Gambling Helpline is a UK GamCare service27. See our gambling help in India page for where to start.
