Resorts World Genting published an official notice of clarification on 28 February 2024 stating that Genting Casino has not closed, after what it described as recent media articles reporting a closure1. The operator said its gaming operations continue to operate as usual1.
The notice said the resort upgrades its facilities as part of an ongoing effort to improve operational efficiency and the gaming and entertainment experience for guests, and that this work involves temporarily closing certain sections of the casino1. It did not say which sections are affected, how long the work will take, or when it began. Those details have not been reported1.
"We refer to the recent media articles regarding the closure of Genting Casino."
"Our gaming operations continue to operate as usual."
The notice was signed off as addressed to "Dear valued Guests" and carried the date 28th February 20241. It was issued under the heading Official Notice of Clarification on the resort's daily notice page, which also carries advisories on fraud alerts, data safety, reservation hotline changes and unauthorized use of the Genting Malaysia name and logo for online gaming activities1. No figure for the cost of the upgrades, no completion date and no list of closed sections appear in the notice1.
Resorts World Genting sits in the Genting Highlands in Pahang, Malaysia, and is the country's main casino resort. The property's casino floor is split across areas including SkyCasino and Genting Casino, alongside hotels such as Genting Grand, Highlands Hotel, Crockfords and First World Hotel1. The notice did not specify which of these areas the temporary closures cover1.
What it means for players
For anyone planning a visit to Resorts World Genting, the operator's position is that the casino is open and gaming is running normally, with disruption limited to unnamed sections under upgrade1. Because the notice does not identify those sections, players cannot tell from it which games, rooms or floors might be unavailable on a given day, and no timeline for the work has been given1.
Malaysian locals, expats and visitors face the same position: the resort has not announced any change to entry rules, opening hours or the games on offer, and none of those details appear in the clarification1. Anyone weighing a trip against other regional options can compare Asia's casino destinations, and the general rules on who may enter Malaysian casinos are set out in the Malaysia guide.
What happens next
No completion date for the upgrades and no reopening schedule for the affected sections have been announced1. The resort said it will continue to upgrade facilities, without stating when the work will finish1.
