9 Classic Family Games You Didn’t Know You Can Bet on

When you’ve exhausted all possible Netflix options, and you and your friends feel like doing something more interactive, that calls for a game night!

You don’t have to be content with pulling out some dice and a few card decks. Take the excitement of your night-in adventure up a notch by placing a bet on classic family games.

Ask any gambling enthusiast, and they’ll tell you a wager spices up any pursuit. Believe it or not, you can bet on classic family games. And the best part is that you can easily do it with your peers and family since they likely know the rules to most of them. If not, these games are pretty easy to pick up.

How to Bet on Classic Family Games

When thinking about gambling, most individuals only think about sports betting and casino games. But the truth is, you can gamble on practically anything. And placing a bet on classic family games might just be the added excitement you’re looking for. Below are nine traditional family games you can wager on.

Monopoly

Monopoly is one of the more popular board games you can bet on. In this classic game, you purchase property as you move around the board. You can up the value of your properties by building houses or charge rent when other players land on them.

Every player usually starts with $1,500 apiece. The goal is to win all the money of your opponents. Players who run out of funds exit the game. While Monopoly is hardly associated with gambling, it’s one of the best options if you want to bet on classic family games.

Since the game mechanic centers on play money, you can set the stakes according to the play money value. However, it’s not advisable to bet the actual value of the play money. Monopoly is a winner take all game, and of course, you don’t want to risk your $1,500 on a board game.

Instead, you can play Monopoly for money by betting a fixed amount per game. For instance, you can wager around $1 to $5 per game to keep the stakes low. The best part is a Monopoly game can last an hour or longer. Meaning, you can play for a lengthy period without staking too much.

Rummy

Like most of the games in this list, Rummy is a trick-taking game. It often has two or more players. You begin with a hand of seven cards and draw and discard, looking to establish sets of at least three and runs of at least four.

In Rummy, your goal is to beat your opponent/s to laying down all cards. Once a player lays down all their cards, the rest will add the value of their hand up and list the score. For most Rummy game variations, the first player to get 500 points loses.

Alternatively, you can score Rummy by giving the points left in the opponent’s hands to the hand winner. In that case, the first player to 500 wins. You may also shorten the game by playing only a single hand or to 100 or 250 points.

When you bet on classic family games like Rummy, you can bet a fixed amount to win whether you play a single hand or a set point total. If you’re playing a longer game, you can wager a set amount per point. Just make sure that you don’t make it too high.

Gin Rummy

Alternatively known as “Gin,” Gin Rummy is a Rummy variety with the same scoring system as Rummy. When playing Gin, you need to wait until you can put all of your cards down at once. Meanwhile, in regular Rummy, you may get cards more than one at a time and lay sets and runs down immediately after having them.

Like regular Rummy, you can play Gin one hand at a time, to 500 points or whatever you agree on. Betting options also include wagering on a set amount for winning or a set amount per point.

Euchre

Typically played with four players, Euchre is a trick-taking game where participants play as two teams. It’s played to 10 points with scoring as follows:

  • 1 point = if makers win three or four tricks
  • 2 points = if makers win all five tricks
  • 4 points = if a defender plays alone and takes three or four tricks
  • 5 points = if a defender plays alone and takes five tricks

Playing Euchre involves a great deal of strategy. You and your partner have an equal impact on the game result. So if you want to bet on classic family games like Euchre, it’s a must to find a competent partner. When betting on Euchre, you can wager on the outcome of one game, a series of games, or per point.

Chess

While it’s relatively easy to learn, Chess is one of the most challenging games to master. Among all the games in this list, it uses strategy the most.

As you’d expect, a chess master always dominates a weaker opponent. Therefore, if you’re planning to bet on Chess, find opponents with a similar skill set. Or better yet, try to be so good at it.

As is usually the case when placing a bet on classic family games, you can find various ways to gamble on Chess. The easiest way to go is by wagering a set amount per game or series of matches.

Checkers

Perfect for players of all ages, Checkers is a two-player game that uses a checkered board. Each player has a set of discs—one black, the other red. Your goal is to jump over and eliminate all your opponent’s checkers. While the game involves some strategy, anyone can effortlessly learn how to play.

Looking at Checkers’ game design, you can wager by the game or series of games. The most common way to bet on classic family games like Checkers is to wager on every match. However, you may opt for a best of three, five, or seven series.

Unless you’re sure you have a competitive edge over your opponent, don’t play Checkers for large stakes. More often than not, a master Checker player wins over a poor opponent.

Yahtzee

Another classic family game that you can bet on is Yahtzee. Played by two or more individuals, the game uses five dice and a score sheet. Your goal is to complete every poker hand on your score sheet. The player with the highest total score wins.

Yahtzee involves both strategy and chance since the game depends on the luck of the dice. Betting on Yahtzee can be on a set amount to win or a set amount per point. You may also play a best of three, five, or seven series. When you wager a fixed amount per point, you can win/lose a bit in a single game. However, over a lengthier set of matches, the overall scores are often almost the same.

Pinochle

The majority of the family games in this list are easy to learn and involve a combination of skill and luck. That gives even novice players a decent chance to win. However, that’s not the case with Pinochle.

Unlike with other games on this list, you have to be a decent player before you even think of betting on Pinochle. The game is more complicated to learn, but once you get past the learning curve, you’ll find that it’s fun.

Pinochle is a trick-taking game played by two or four individuals. In a two-player match, contenders battle against each other. But when four players are available, they play in pairs.

You get points at the end of each hand to see the winner and loser. Like Rummy, you can play Pinochle to a total point number. If you want to keep things simple, you can also play to see who wins a hand.

Spades

Finally, another family game that involves tactics is Spades. Often played to 500, the game centers on trumps of a specific suit. Unlike in Euchre, the only trump suit in Spades is spades.

Betting on Spades is similar to Rummy and Gin Rummy. You can wager a set amount for winning or per difference in points. You can play one game at a time, to 500, or a lower figure.

The Bottom Line

When planning to bet on classic family games, there’s no shortage of choices. You can always add small stakes to practically any game to spice things up. Gambling on family games doesn’t have to mean risking a lot of money. Start with small sums and only play for higher stakes if all the players are comfortable with it.

Remember, when you bet on classic family games, the ultimate goal is to have fun. So don’t ruin the excitement by attempting to play for too much.
